Since Shion-chan had gotten into “miya-iri,” so I thought she might be in the same class, but she wasn’t in Class 3. Shion-chan, Takako-chan, Asuka-chan, and Zumii… we’d all ended up separated. Even after finally getting close. I wondered if second year would bring new encounters again.
Well then… time to pick up my textbooks and head home.
“Soto—?”
Someone called out to me, so I turned around. It was Takako-chan and Asuka-chan.
“You’re not wearing your glasses, so I didn’t recognize you,” Takako-chan said.
“I was honestly shocked too—you even tied your hair up so neatly. What happened?” Asuka-chan leaned in, peering at me.
…Maybe I’m just in a different mood today?
“Soto—you got ‘miya-iri,’ right?” Takako-chan said.
“Yeah. I’m in Class 3,” I replied simply.
“I’ll do my best too.”
Yeah. Good luck.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a boy.
Tall. Buzz cut.
Ah… that guy.
“…Soto?”
Before I even thought about it, I had grabbed his wrist.
He looked down at me with a puzzled expression from his tall frame.
Huh? What… is this déjà vu?
“Do I know you or something?”
“Saijō-kun, right?”
“Yeah.”
“I feel like there was something I was supposed to tell you.”
“Something you were supposed to tell me?”
“Huh? What was it…? Wait…”
The buzz-cut boy let out a short, amused snort.
“Soto, what are you doing?!”
Takako-chan looked genuinely angry now.
Ah—right.
I quickly grabbed Takako-chan’s arm and pulled her closer.
“Yes! This girl! Please help her!”
“W-wait, Sotoko, what are you even saying?!”
“Saijō-kun, you’re good at math, right? Please teach her how to study!”
“Sotoko, seriously, what are you talking about—”
Takako-chan’s face went bright red as she grabbed my arm.
“Fine.”
…Huh?
Both Takako-chan and I looked up at him.
The buzz-cut boy.
“Teaching others is one of the best ways to test my own understanding. When and where works for you?”
Takako-chan froze.
Seeing that, he calmly took out his phone.
“Never mind, we can arrange it later. Send me a message. Let’s exchange contact info.”
“Y-yes!” Takako-chan squeaked, hurriedly pulling out her phone.
Their phones were brought together. Her hand was trembling.
“See you.”
Saijō-kun turned away.
“Thank you!”
I shouted without thinking.
Right. That’s what I wanted to say.
I had wanted to thank him.
But… why?
He must have helped me a lot before. But what was it again?
Then a word drifted up in my mind.
“Ishizuchi.”
Ishizuchi…?
Mount Ishizuchi?
Why is that… suddenly in my head?
“Hey, Sotoko!”
Takako-chan grabbed both of my arms, her face completely red.
“What do you think you’re doing, going off and deciding things on your own like that?!”
I’d never seen Takako-chan—who’s usually so cool and dry—make a face like that.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Well, aren’t you aiming for ‘Miya-iri’ next year? Wouldn’t it be better to have a good tutor?”
“That’s not what we’re talking about!”
Asuka-chan joined in, grinning mischievously.
“Takako, isn’t this great? Soto, nice assist.”
“Asuka, seriously…”
“But wow, Takako actually has a cute side too. First time I’ve seen you like that.”
“Asuka—!”
“Oh right. Maybe you should ask Soto to teach you some bento recipes? I hear boys are weak for homemade cooking.”
Just then, Shion-chan showed up.
“Eh—Soto? What happened to you?”
