Huh...? 〜

The day after we visited our uncle’s house, the new class assignments for the school year were posted at Ehime High School.

That morning, I put on my uniform and left the house with Miko. While I was locking the front door, Tōko-chan came out from the house across the street.

 “Huh…?”

For some reason, seeing her in her black sailor uniform felt strangely unfamiliar.

 “Morning.”

Tōko-chan smiled at us. Her glossy black hair, cut neatly at shoulder length, swayed softly.

 “...Morning.”

 “What’s wrong?”

Before I realized it, I had a hand over my mouth, staring right at her face.

“Ah, sorry. It’s just… lately, Tōko-chan, I feel like we… huh? Wait. Did we go somewhere together recently?”

“Where on earth would we have gone? I've been busy with club activities lately.”

 “Huh? At night?”

 Tōko-chan laughed.

“Sotoko, don’t tell me you’ve started sneaking out at night or something.”

 “Wasn't Miko with us too?”

Even Miko tilted his head in confusion. Tōko-chan rolled her eyes.

“Where exactly would the three of us even go at night?”

 ...Right.

 Yeah.

 Then what am I remembering?

For the past few days, it felt as though little pieces of my memory had gone missing.

“Anyway, more importantly, Soto-chan. What’s with you today?”

 “What do you mean?”

 “You’re not wearing your glasses.”

 Oh. Right.

“I dunno. Even though the weather’s nice today, having the frames in my field of vision suddenly felt kind of annoying, so I left them off.”

“That look suits you way better.”

 “Really?”

“And you even did your hair all nicely.”

“Well, we had time this morning, so… just a little.”

“When a beauty like you goes and does that, it’s like… mm, I dunno. It makes me laugh.”

 beautiful...

I feel like someone said that to me recently too.

 ...Well, whatever.

New spring leaves were already tinting the city with a fresh, youthful green. From Minamimachi, we boarded the streetcar.

A family of four blond tourists—probably visitors from overseas—stood nearby. When they noticed us in our uniforms, their faces lit up with surprise.

“Wow, they really are wearing sailor uniforms… so anime is real!” they exclaimed.

Cute, cool, whatever—that’s fine, but hey, miss, you shouldn’t be pointing your phone straight at us.

 “Hey!”

I crossed my index fingers into an X, signaling “no,” and the girl jumped in surprise. Her parents were laughing, but this isn’t exactly something to be laughing about.

Still… if scenes like this are what bring more inbound tourists, maybe we high school girls are contributing to the economy in our own way. That thought briefly crossed my mind.

 We arrived at school.

Just inside the red-brick main gate was the bulletin board. Large sheets with class assignments and names, written boldly in thick calligraphy, were posted there. I parted ways with my brother.

“You know, this kind of thing could just be online,” I muttered.

“Seriously. A very traditional ritual,” she replied.

“And the teachers must have a hard time writing all this for, what, a thousand students?”

“No, no—apparently it’s the calligraphy club that does it.”

I said this, remembering something Takako-chan had mentioned before. They apparently write them in sets of twenty names, and mistakes aren’t uncommon, so there’s a fair amount of rewriting involved.

“Oh, really? Wait—so even exam seating charts too?”

“Yeah. Those have strict time limits, so it’s apparently pretty tough.”

“So those announcements are basically just practice for the calligraphy club?”

While we were talking like that, I looked over the list for Class 3, and there it was—written in elegant brushstrokes: Sotoko Kinashi.

“Soto-chan, looks like we're in the same class this year,” Tōko-chan said.

“Yeah. Let’s get along this year too,” I replied with a smile.

 “I’ve got club activities, so…”

With that, Tōko-chan and I went our separate ways.
