A Distant Memory 〜

 They were on Ōmishima.

Together with Iyo no Kuni-gami and Ishizuchi, the mountain god.

And I was there as Seto no Umi-gami.

 “You have done well.”

 Iyo no Kuni-gami spoke quietly.

“Thanks to you, feelings that had lingered for a very long time have finally found peace.”

 Even so...

“To think you managed to choose the very wombs through which they would be born.”

 Huh?

 Wait.

Did I just say that out loud?

 Ishizuchi laughed.

“Hey now. Don’t go borrowing someone else’s voice without permission. Look at her. She's the one who said it, and she's completely bewildered.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

His eyes, however, were not smiling at all.

Iyo no Kuni-gami let out a soft laugh.

It seemed to be a familiar exchange between them.

“But truly, you found quite an extraordinary person. Did something happen with Karu no Ōiratsume?”

To her question, Ishizuchi replied in a strangely suggestive tone.

 “Nothing happened.”

 A scene appeared before us.

 There was a woman.

She looked young, though not young enough to be called a girl.

Beside her stood an elderly woman.

Together they erected a small shrine and a stone monument.

A shrine dedicated to the souls of the Karu siblings.

Then they joined their hands in prayer for a long time.

 “What will you do now?”

“I shall devote the rest of my life to fulfilling the life I have been given. If there is anything I can do for the people of Iyo, who have shown me such kindness, I shall do it gladly.”

“Do you have somewhere to go?”

“There is someone who has offered to care for me.”

 Iyo no Kuni-gami smiled.

“And the one who offered that care was you, Ishizuchi.”

The woman who had been reborn with Princess Sotori's soul was given a small hermitage and lived out the rest of her life in peace.

Near the end of her days, she sat facing a broad-shouldered man.

“You have done so much for me. I know you are no ordinary man. But before I die, there is one thing I wish to ask.”

“If it lies within my power.”

“Within me dwelt feelings carried over from a previous life. They have now been enshrined by Iyo no Kuni-gami, yet the feelings themselves have not disappeared. Someday, there may come a time when they can no longer be restrained.”

 “And those feelings are?”

“To be united with the one to whom I made a promise in my former life.”

 “That would be exceedingly difficult.”

“Yes. We were reborn many times, yet never once managed to find each other.”

“That is hardly surprising. In a world this vast, for two souls to be born in the same era, the same place, and under the same circumstances is almost impossible.”

“I understand. And yet... if the feelings become impossible to suppress... could you not somehow make it happen with your power?”

Iyo no Kuni-gami wore a quiet smile.

“You were just as kind back when you were Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto of Miyajima.”

Once again, words came from my mouth before I realized it.

 Miyajima?

 Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto?

What was that supposed to mean?

 “An unnecessary remark.”

Ishizuchi dismissed it with a snort.

“Still, it seems Yamazumi Rin said something rather interesting.”

 “Huh?”

 Me?

 I said something interesting?

Being suddenly dragged into the conversation left me completely bewildered.

“Indeed,” said Iyo no Kuni-gami, laughing softly.

“You were the one who said,

‘Where did all that determination to build a life together go?’”

 “Oh...”

I had said exactly that to Sotoko’s brother.

I had simply spoken what was on my mind.

“To me,” said Ishizuchi, “it sounded more like:

‘It’s about time you finally settled down.’”

Iyo no Kuni-gami burst into cheerful laughter.

 I felt strangely embarrassed.

The next time I saw Sotoko’s brother, how was I supposed to apologize?

Then suddenly, another scene appeared before my eyes.

 “Miko! Wait for me!”

Beneath a crystal-clear autumn sky, a girl with flushed cheeks pedaled her bicycle with all her strength, unconcerned by the way her hair flew wildly behind her.

 “Sotoko! You’re too slow!”

The boy riding ahead shouted over his shoulder.

His face was bright with laughter.

“You’re the one who’s too fast!”

 The girl shouted back.

She was already standing on the pedals.

The two of them were crossing a suspension bridge.

 Below flowed the tides.

Above stretched a pale blue sky.

Beyond lay a deep blue sea.

Scattered islands, covered in green, floated across the water.

Some of the leaves had already turned red and gold.

A cool autumn breeze swept past.

 “Come on, Sotoko! Hurry up!”

The boy stopped his bicycle halfway across the bridge and called to her.

 “Just wait!”

 At last she caught up.

 “Wow!”

A vast expanse of blue sea spread beneath them.

 “It’s beautiful!”

Another gust of wind swept by.

Ships cut white paths across the water below.

Later, at an observation deck on the island beyond the bridge, the two sat together overlooking the sea and opened their lunch.

 Six rice balls.

 Sausages.

 Fried chicken.

 Rolled omelets.

 And salad.

 “Mmm. This is good.”

“I put spinach in the omelet this time.”

“The rice balls are better too.”

 “Right? They're fluffier now.”

 After lunch, the boy stood.

“Shall we circle the island before heading back?”

 “Wait.”

 The girl stopped him.

“You’ve got rice on your cheek.”

She reached out with a finger, brushed it away, and popped it into her mouth.

 “Miko, you’re such a kid.”

By evening they were crossing the bridge again on their bicycles.

The autumn sun hung lower now, casting everything in golden light.

 The wind had picked up.

Their cheeks were red from the cold.

Yet both of them kept pedaling happily, talking the whole way.

Now and then the girl smiled.

 A smile I somehow recognized.

 ...

 When had this happened?

The two figures in the vision looked no older than middle-school students.

A memory preserved within the sea god who dwelled inside me.

So they really had always been close.

 The thought made me smile.
