A Strange Dream 〜
The setting sun shone across the horizon.
The whole world was bathed in gold.
“Are you truly going?”
“That’s why I came all this way. There’s no other way from here except by ship, is there?”
“There is no telling whether you will arrive safely.”
“There’s no other way to reach him, is there?”
“Could you not reconsider, just once more?”
I was trying desperately to persuade someone.
“I cannot leave him all alone. Besides… there is no longer any place for me in the capital.”
She spoke with quiet finality.
Then there was nothing left but to accept her decision.
“I understand. My lady, then I shall accompany you.”
My precious lady.
I had to protect her.
Yet aboard the ship, all I could do was hold her frail hand as she hovered between life and death.
“Stay with us, my lady.”
The helplessness of those words filled me with shame.
Even so, the ship eventually reached its destination.
Carrying a letter, I sought out a nobleman.
“The Princess is waiting for you.”
I guided the stunned man to her.
The Princess lay resting.
When the two of them embraced and wept together, an indescribable sense of fulfillment filled my heart.
And yet—
The next thing I saw was both of them lying on the ground, blood staining their clothes.
“Why...?”
“Why?”
“Why?”
They were reborn.
Yet they could never meet.
Their lives brushed past each other again and again.
They were reborn countless times.
Again and again.
And finally—
they found one another.
The two of them held each other tightly.
“We’re going to stay together forever now, okay? Forever. Promise me.”
“I’ll never let you go. No matter what happens. Never.”
“I could never forget you. I always wanted to live beside you.”
“Let’s stay together forever. Let’s build our future together.”
Their souls merged into one.
“Princess...”
“I’m so glad.”
“Truly glad.”
My eyes snapped open.
It was still dark outside.
What was that dream?
“Thank you... for watching over us all this time.”
I couldn’t forget the brilliant smile she wore at the very end.
When morning came, I went into the living room.
“Morning,” Mom said.
Then she looked at me strangely.
“Asuka, what happened to you?”
Puzzled, I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
Tear tracks covered my face.
“I’m working the night shift today, so dinner’s your responsibility, okay?”
“Okaaay.”
For some reason, the face of my classmate Sotoko drifted into my mind.
Just the other day she’d helped me with a math problem I couldn’t figure out.
Apparently she handled most of the housework at home.
Still, it wasn’t like my domestic skills were anything to be ashamed of.
...Huh?
“Thank you... for watching over us all this time.”
Was that Sotoko’s voice?
Wait.
What kind of dream was I having?
