So That's Why 〜
Uncle took another sip of tea before continuing.
“There’s still more. The Harumiyas here…”
He glanced toward the couple sitting beside him.
“Sotoko, they’re your late father’s parents. Your biological grandfather and grandmother.”
“…What? Whaaat?!”
Mr. Harumiya smiled at me awkwardly, almost shyly.
Mrs. Harumiya’s eyes brimmed with tears.
“Soto-chan… I’m sorry. I’m sorry we kept this from you all this time.”
Pressing a handkerchief to the corners of her eyes, she left the room.
The two people from the Harumiya family…
were my grandfather and grandmother?
I was actually related to them by blood?
“I know this must be an enormous shock for both of you,” Uncle said quietly. “But I want you to believe at least this much: none of us kept silent because we meant to deceive you. When your current father and mother remarried, it was decided that the truth would be hidden until you were grown. We didn't want you carrying worries you didn't need to carry as children.”
After saying that much, Uncle let out a long breath.
I couldn’t think at all.
Beside me, my brother sat in silence as well, staring blankly into space.
“That’s everything,” Uncle said at last. “Does it all make sense?”
“…Thank you very much.”
We moved off our cushions and bowed deeply to Uncle and Mr. Harumiya.
“None of that formal stuff now,” Uncle said gently. “Come on, both of you, raise your heads.”
When we looked up, Uncle was watching us with an expression full of warmth.
“It’s a strange thing,” he murmured. “But now, for the first time, I feel like those two sisters can finally rest in peace.”
As he spoke, Uncle turned his eyes toward the garden.
I followed his gaze.
Beyond the veranda lay the hazy sky of spring.
Then my brother spoke.
“What kind of person was my real mother?”
Uncle answered with a gentle smile.
“She was very beautiful, very kind… and always smiling.”
“Then she was just like the mother who raised us—the mother who died when we were in elementary school.”
“That’s right. Those two weren’t just identical in appearance — their personalities were exactly alike too. Always laughing, always brightening the people around them. There wasn’t the slightest trace of cruelty in either of them.”
I asked my own question too.
“And my father?”
Uncle smiled faintly.
“He was the finest man I've ever known.”
Mr. Harumiya added quietly,
“He was a son I was proud of.”
Then his eyes drifted into the distance, and tears shimmered faintly there.
“So the reason you were always taking walks around our neighborhood… was because you’d been watching over Sotoko all this time.”
My brother said this to Mr. Harumiya.
The old man laughed bashfully.
“Thank you very much.”
As my brother bowed his head beside me, I looked silently at Mr. Harumiya’s face and whispered my own thank you in my heart.
“Your mothers… both of them were sisters I was proud of. I’ve never known kinder sisters than they were.”
As Uncle said this, he lifted his face, closed his eyes, and tears spilled down his cheeks.
“Why did sisters that wonderful… why did we have to lose both of them?”
After crying quietly for a while, Uncle looked at me.
“Sotoko… you’re starting to resemble your mother more and more. Sometimes, when I see your little expressions or gestures, I feel as though I’m looking at the gentle sister I knew when we were young.”
