The Truth About Us 〜わたしたちの本当〜

In this life, we were not bound by a forbidden relationship — not siblings whose love was something shameful and condemned. Iyo no Kuni-gami and Ishizuchi, the mountain god — the two guardian gods of Iyo — had acknowledged us.

And yet, for those of us living in the present, a serious question remained.

Whose child was my brother, really?

Who was the woman I had first tried to be born to?

 And more than anything—

why were we “brother and sister” in the first place?

 I sent Father an email.

“Please tell me. Who are my brother’s real father and mother? What is the true relationship between my brother and me?”

I wondered if it might have been too blunt, but there was no point dressing it up with careful words.

A long while later, the reply came.

“Your grandmother’s third memorial service will be held soon. Ask your uncle then. I'll let him know beforehand.”

At the very beginning of April, Grandmother’s third memorial service was held.

My brother and I visited our uncle’s house in Dōgo-chō and offered prayers before the family altar.

After the priest left, we were shown into the reception room. It was a Japanese-style room with a veranda facing the garden.

For some reason, Mr. and Mrs. Harumiya were there as well.

Across the low table sat the five of us: my brother and I facing our uncle and the Harumiya couple. Aunt placed five teacups on the table before us.

My brother seemed tense. Strangely enough, I myself felt perfectly calm.

 “Well… have some tea first.”

With that, Uncle lifted his teacup to his lips.

My brother took a sip too, and after watching him, I drank as well.

For a while, all five of us sat in silence, sipping our tea.

At last, prompted quietly by Mrs. Harumiya, Uncle finally began to speak.

 “Miko… Sotoko.”

 I looked straight at him.

His usually unruly hair had been neatly trimmed.

“I don’t know who told you what about your births, or how much you already know.”

His voice was as calm as ever.

“But today, I’ll tell you exactly what I know.”

After saying that, Uncle closed his eyes, drew in a deep breath, and slowly let it out.

Then he turned toward my brother and spoke again, more firmly this time, each word deliberate.

“Miko… your mother died before you were even two years old.”

My brother nodded quietly. I understood at once that he meant the woman Ishizuchi had shown us in those visions.

 “Your mother…”

 Uncle paused for a breath.

 “…was my older sister.”

 “…What?”

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

 Uncle continued calmly.

“And, Sotoko… she was the twin sister of the woman you call your mother.”

 I caught my breath.

 I had never expected that.

Grandmother's photo album. The two girls in it with exactly the same face.

 Uncle went on.

“And then, about your father, Sotoko…”

 My father?

“Your real father died before you were born.”

For a moment, it felt as though my breathing stopped.

“Th-then… who is the father I have now?”

“Your current father is Miko’s father — in other words, the husband of the older twin sister. After Miko’s mother died, he remarried your mother.”

Neither my brother nor I could find any words.

My brother’s mother had died after giving birth to him, never recovering from the decline in her health. Left alone with a small child, Father became a widower.

Meanwhile, my own father died not long after marrying my mother. At the time, she was already pregnant with me.

After many twists and turns, the two people left alone eventually remarried.

“So originally, Miko and Sotoko… the two of you are cousins on your mothers’ side.”

I looked over at my brother.

 He looked back at me.

“But,” Uncle continued, “your mothers were identical twins. Different bodies, yes, but genetically identical. So even if you call yourselves brother and sister, that wouldn’t exactly be wrong either.”
