Mine 〜
“You never once thought maybe it could be me?”
“That was the one possibility I didn’t want to think about.”
“You didn’t want to?”
“Because if it were you… then things would end up exactly the same as before, wouldn’t they?”
I see.
Yeah… that makes sense.
But still.
“Then…”
Your face said, What now?
“You never once wished it would be me?”
I deliberately lowered my voice into something slow and teasing as I stared straight at you.
Without answering, you looked away slightly.
Ah… so I was right? Miko, you’re adorable.
I edged even closer, until we could feel each other’s breath.
“I'm glad it turned out to be me, Miko.”
You still wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Hehe… your ears are turning red.
“And what about you, Sotoko?”
What about me…?
Suddenly, I remembered the excitement I’d felt yesterday while we walked through town together. It wasn’t really about his looks. I loved the way he was always calm, always quietly devoted to whatever he was doing. And yet, he could spill food everywhere and be almost unbelievably careless about his appearance.
“Well... I'm not complaining.”
Ah — what are you grinning about, Miko?
“Sotoko.”
“Yeah?”
“Let's stay good to each other, okay?”
Huh? Why would you suddenly say something so formal like that?
I could feel my cheeks growing warm.
Miko, that’s unfair. But still…
Honestly, it made me happy.
“I can never thank Ishizuchi enough.”
“You saw Ishizuchi’s vision too?”
“Vision?”
“You didn’t? Then who told you we aren’t actually related by blood?”
“Tōko told me. She also said Ishizuchi went to a lot of trouble to make it happen.”
“You know… apparently I was trying to become your real little sister.”
“You're hopeless.”
“Hey, that’s mean!”
You laughed.
I laughed too.
For a while, the two of us laughed out loud together.
And once the laughter faded, the conversation fell silent.
I kept looking into your eyes. You were staring straight back at me.
What is this silence?
My heart fluttered.
“I’ll go make breakfast.”
Unable to bear it any longer, I sprang out of the futon.
I changed clothes and went into the kitchen.
The moment I was alone, everything that had just happened suddenly became embarrassing all over again. And yet I couldn’t stop smiling.
After a while, the pot of miso soup began bubbling softly.
Oh no.
I hurried to turn off the heat.
As I chopped up some pickled Chinese cabbage, a scene drifted into my mind: him happily eating the food I’d made.
Someone who had loved me faithfully for sixteen hundred years.
And the moment I thought that, I felt something hot running down my cheeks.
A trembling happiness welled up from deep inside my chest.
Still holding the kitchen knife, I lowered my head.
But I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
I set the knife down in the sink and crouched there on the spot.
The tears simply wouldn’t stop.
I don’t know how much time passed before you came in.
“Sotoko.”
The moment you rushed over, I buried myself in your arms and broke down against your chest.
What on earth am I doing, crying like this first thing in the morning…?
