Ishizuchi 〜

 And then—

 time froze.

In that silent world without sound, a light approached from the east. It took the shape of a dragon and plunged into the pond before us. And from within that gentle light appeared—

 Saijō Haruka.

“Ehime-san, did you call for me?”

 “Yeah. Thanks for coming.”

 Ehime-san?

 Iyo no Kuni-gami smiled.

 “He’s like me.”

 “Like you?”

“He was born with a god dwelling inside him.”

 “A god…?”

 “Yep. A mountain god, though.”

 “A mountain god?”

 “The god of Mount Ishizuchi.”

 Saijō Haruka turned toward me.

Tall and slender, dressed in the stiff-collared uniform of Hime High, he spoke in a blunt, careless tone.

“You look depressed as hell for someone who finally got reincarnated.”

What was that supposed to mean all of a sudden?

“Princess of Karu. Do you remember when you latched onto your current body?”

“Attached myself”? What a horrible way to put it.

“You tried to dwell in someone you absolutely never should have.”

 What was he talking about?

 “Do you remember?”

As he said that, a faint memory surfaced in my mind.

 Before I was born—

when I was searching for the woman who would become my mother.

I found someone and tried to go to her.

But somehow, I ended up inside a different person instead.

 “Mom! Mom!”

A woman was walking farther and farther away.

 That’s right.

I had tried to go to that woman.

 …?

 Wait.

 What did Ishizuchi just say?

Someone you absolutely never should have dwelled in?

 Did that mean… her?

 “So I stopped you.”

 “Stopped me?”

 —!

 I remembered!

Back then, someone pulled my hand.

 And then shoved me away.

That was why I ended up inside someone different from the person I’d originally chosen.

 If that memory was real—

then the reason I wasn’t born as that woman’s child…

the reason I was instead born as my brother’s sister…

 was because of that.

 “Mom! Mom!”

The woman disappeared into the distance.

 And at that moment—

 I saw someone standing there.

 Someone grinning at me.

 That face was—

 Saijō Haruka.

 Huh?

 Wait.

 What?

 Then—

 then—

 then does that mean…?!

The person who grabbed my hand and pushed me away back then…

 was Saijō Haruka?

 Which means…

Saijō Haruka was the one who made us brother and sister?!

 I lifted my head.

 And looked at Saijō Haruka—

 no, the god of Ishizuchi.

He looked down at me with a fearless grin.

 My mind was in chaos.

After sixteen hundred years… we were finally given another chance at life.

And the person I loved most had returned to this world too.

 And yet—

that mountain god was the one who made us brother and sister all over again?

Did he want us to suffer even more?

 I couldn’t forgive him.

 Never.

Why would a mountain god force such a cruel fate onto us?

I glared at Ishizuchi with burning anger.

But infuriatingly enough, he still wore a faint smile on his lips.

Without taking my eyes off him, I stood up.

“That’s one hell of a scary look you’ve got there.”

“You were the one who grabbed my hand and pushed me away back then, weren’t you?”

 “Yep.”

“Why would you do something like that?!”

 Ishizuchi laughed.

“Why? What, you want me to say it was fate or something?”

 “Don’t mess with me!”

The words burst out of me before I could stop them.

 What could you possibly know?

About what we’ve gone through for sixteen hundred years?

How could you do something so cruel to us?

Frustration overwhelmed me, and tears spilled from my eyes.
