Tōko 〜
How much time had passed?
Someone walked toward me.
“Why are you crying?”
A young woman’s voice.
I lifted my head slightly and looked at the owner of the voice. A girl in a white blouse and crimson skirt leaned down close to my face.
Glossy black hair cut neatly at her shoulders. Pale, translucent skin. Dark eyes.
It was Tōko-chan.
“Why…?”
“Why? Because you called for me.”
“Called for you?”
“You prayed, didn’t you? ‘Please, God.’”
I stared into the dark eyes of the girl before me. Tōko-chan smiled faintly and said,
“Because I am the god of Iyo.”
“The god of Iyo…?”
“Yes. Right now, I’m borrowing the body of this girl, Mishima Tōko.”
A memory from a dream surfaced in my mind.
“There’s a god inside me.”
Back then, Tōko-chan had clearly said those words.
So it had really been true.
“It’s been a long time, hasn’t it, Karu-no-Ooiratsume? How long has it been since we last met? You wished that when you turned sixteen, the memories of your previous life would return to you upon reincarnation, didn’t you?”
The moment she said that, memories of the first time I met the god of Iyo came flooding back.
It was about seven hundred years ago.
I had returned to life once more.
But he wasn’t there.
I kept searching for his reincarnation, and before I knew it, I was already past forty years old without ever finding him. Even if I found him now, there would be nothing we could do.
Carrying that sorrow in my heart, my soul wandered beneath the skies of Iyo.
That was when Iyo no Kuni-gami appeared before me.
At the time, Kuni-gami had taken the form of an old woman.
“The one you wait for is no longer in this world.”
“No longer? What do you mean?”
“He died when you were around ten.”
If he died at ten, then it would have been before his memories of the past could awaken.
“I sealed away the soul of Karu-no-Miko. I shall seal your soul beside his as well. To be reborn in the same place, under similar circumstances, and at nearly the same age in this world is a chance less than one in ten thousand. So instead, I will at least enshrine your souls together.”
That was what Kuni-gami had said before sealing away the soul of Karu-no-Ooiratsume from her reincarnated body.
Right here.
At this very place.
The place where ships once arrived sixteen hundred years ago.
Together, Kuni-gami and I built a small shrine and a stone monument for the Karu siblings.
“I went through all the trouble of enshrining you together, so why did you decide to be born into this world again?”
Why?
The answer was simple.
Because we made a promise.
I remembered the image of a bride dressed in a pure white wedding gown.
The people around her were celebrating her happiness.
That’s right—
when two people love each other and choose to be together, everyone around them is supposed to celebrate that.
And yet our love had been treated as something forbidden.
That was why we placed our hopes in another life.
So that one day, we could finally be together.
“Well, whatever,” Kuni-gami said with a sigh and a small laugh. “Love isn’t something you can explain with logic.”
“God of Iyo… why have you come? Are you planning to seal our souls away again?”
“Oh? Even after finally being reborn, that’s what you’re thinking about?”
“But we ended up exactly the same as before.”
“About that, Karu-no-Ooiratsume… there’s someone I’d like you to meet. Would you mind?”
“Someone you want me to meet?”
“Yes. Someone who has been watching over you since before you were born.”
“Before I was born?”
“That’s right. The person who told me that Kinashi Sotoko was the reincarnation of Karu-no-Ooiratsume.”
