At Last 〜ゆるされる時〜
“Hey, Karu-no-Ooiratsume.”
It was the voice of Iyo no Kuni-gami.
What was with that casual tone?
“Could you at least hear us out first?”
“What’s there left to hear now?”
“First, calm down. In this life, you and I are childhood friends, remember? So hear me out as a favor between friends.”
Kuni-gami smiled softly.
“You should probably see this for yourself. Ishizuchi, show her.”
“Show me…?”
Ishizuchi walked over with a clear "yeah, yeah, whatever" look on his face and suddenly pressed a finger against my forehead.
A vision flooded my mind.
I saw a person.
A woman.
She was the woman I had first tried to be born to before becoming Kinashi Sotoko.
She was lying in a hospital bed.
There was a child there too.
A tiny little boy, still barely old enough to toddle around.
And then—
the woman died.
Her body was carried away.
The little boy left behind began to cry.
“Mommy… Mommy… Mommy…”
“Miko!”
I cried out without thinking.
My brother, still just a small child, was crying all alone in an empty room.
“Miko! Miko!”
Then another woman appeared.
She was holding a baby in her arms.
She walked over to the crying boy and gently said,
“It was hard being all alone, wasn’t it?”
“Mom!”
I cried out again.
It was my mother—that beautiful, gentle mother.
She crouched down beside the tearful child and gave him a warm, familiar smile.
“It’s okay now. Mommy’s here. I’ll stay by your side forever, so don’t be scared.”
With her long white fingers, she softly wiped away the tears running down his tiny cheeks.
My brother stared straight at her with tear-filled eyes.
“And look—you have a little sister too. I’m sure she’ll become your strength someday. Be good to her, okay?”
Mother showed the baby in her arms to the boy.
That baby…
was me.
The vision ended there.
I stood there blankly, unable to move.
“Karu-no-Ooiratsume… no, Kinashi Sotoko.”
After a moment, Ishizuchi spoke.
“You get it now, don’t you?”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“You two were born into this world to finally fulfill the wish you carried for sixteen hundred years.”
“See ya, beautiful.” Ishizuchi said, and then vanished.
“God of Iyo…”
I called out softly.
“Tell me.”
“Yes?”
“What was that just now? Are you saying… he isn’t actually my mother’s child?”
Iyo no Kuni-gami smiled.
“As you just saw, the two of you were born from different parents.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Th-then… does that mean…”
My chest tightened painfully.
“That we aren’t brother and sister by blood?”
Still smiling gently, Kuni-gami gave a small nod.
“Then… then…”
I could barely breathe.
“If I chose to be with him…”
My voice trembled so badly that the words barely came out.
“No one would condemn us?”
Kuni-gami answered clearly.
“No. No one will condemn you.”
Something warm and overwhelming stirred deep inside my chest.
“Then what does that mean? We… we…”
Kuni-gami turned and glanced behind her.
“Kinashi Karu-no-Miko, you can come out now, can’t you? The person you treasure most has been waiting for you.”
Standing beside Iyo no Kuni-gami was him, his head lowered.
“It’s you…!”
He lifted his face.
Our eyes met.
And in that instant, every emotion came rushing over me at once.
For so, so long…
you were all I ever thought about.
Sixteen hundred years ago, we gambled everything on another life so we could finally be together.
And after that—
after countless reincarnations, after an unimaginably long stretch of time—
the moment we were finally allowed to be together had at last arrived.
“I… I…”
I couldn’t say anything.
My vision blurred with tears.
Not caring that Kuni-gami was standing right there, I ran into his arms.
He held me tightly—so tightly.
Tears poured endlessly from my eyes.
I wrapped my arms around his broad back and buried my face against his chest.
His scent was so familiar.
A scent that made me feel safe.
“We’re going to stay together forever now, okay? Forever. Promise me.”
“I’ll never let you go. No matter what happens. Never.”
“I could never forget you. I always wanted to live beside you.”
“Let’s stay together forever. Let’s build our future together.”
The tears wouldn’t stop.
The person I loved most would finally stay by my side.
And more than anything—
no one would ever condemn us for being together again.
“Soto-chan, Miko-chan.”
A voice called out to us.
It was Kuni-gami—no, Mishima Tōko.
“I can’t keep watching this. I’m heading home.”
And with that, she quietly disappeared.
The soul of Karu-no-Ooiratsume within me, and the soul of Karu-no-Miko within him, gently began to ascend and find peace.
Countless souls gathered around them, as though welcoming them home.
“My lady… I’m so happy for you. Truly.”
“Congratulations. Your wish finally came true.”
At last, light rose from the pond.
The two souls merged into one and wrapped around us softly.
“The rest is up to you now. Live your lives well together.”
And so the souls of Karu-no-Ooiratsume and Karu-no-Miko finally found peace within Kinashi Sotoko and Kinashi Miko.
