To Where You Are 〜はるかな旅へ〜
It’s been… what, sixteen hundred years now?
You were a prince, and I was a princess.
We had many siblings, but we two were born of the same mother—brother and sister sharing exactly the same blood. And yet, when we were little, we hardly saw each other. I was always with Mother, while you stayed constantly at Father’s side.
When we met again after we had both grown older, the first thing you said when you saw my face was, “So that little girl was you…” What a strange thing for you to say. It made me laugh.
The time I spent with you was truly happy.
Little by little, we were always together.
But because I was your real younger sister, I had never once looked at you as a man.
So when you confessed your feelings to me, I thought you were only teasing.
But when I realized you were serious… all I felt was shock.
I couldn’t believe it.
You were destined, one day, to become Emperor.
And I was the one who shared your blood.
It was obvious that such a bond could never be permitted.
And yet… your feelings were painfully sincere.
“Whatever happens, you understand?”
I asked you that over and over again.
And each time, you answered that there was nothing beneath heaven you cherished more than me.
At last, I resolved myself.
To accept the feelings you bore for me.
No matter what fate awaited us, I would remain by your side.
Though we shared the same blood, I would still bind myself to you.
Even now, I remember it vividly.
That moment.
Your breathing. Every expression that crossed your face.
The way your heart was directed so completely, so honestly, toward me—it made me tremble with happiness. And I realized then that I, too, loved you more than anyone, more than anything.
At the same time, I hated the fact that we had been born sharing the same blood.
And the day judgment would eventually come filled me with nothing but fear.
Wanting to escape all of it, even just for a moment, I threw my arms around you and held on tightly.
My heart pounded hard in my chest.
After that… I don’t want to remember any of it.
A marriage between those who shared the same blood—there was no way it would ever be forgiven. Only cruel things followed.
When Father passed away, you were falsely accused, taken prisoner, and exiled to this land of Iyo.
You said you would surely, surely return. But even I, as a woman, understood that such a day would never come. You would never sit upon the throne. And if you ever returned to the capital, war would break out.
Since you departed, the days have grown long. No longer can I wait—I shall go to meet you.”―
I could no longer keep waiting. I only wanted to see you. To touch you. To hear your voice.
I had never left the capital before. I had never set sail across the sea. And yet, I felt no fear.
Wherever you could go, I would follow.
Beyond the sea, at the place where the sun sets, you were there.
If I went there, I would find you.
Yes. Iyo.
How many cycles of the moon had I watched since then?
I entrusted myself to a swaying ship, spent idle days waiting for wind and tide at various ports, and at last arrived at the harbor of this land where you had been exiled.
I sent word immediately, and you came to meet me, crossing the mountains.
I will never forget the look on your face then. As though you had seen a ghost. Even after hearing the message, you likely couldn’t believe it. It was almost amusing.
I was so happy to see you. It was worth coming.
And yet… Even in this remote, rustic place, we still had to hide just to see each other.
My body only grew older. I could not bear children. Hope slowly faded from view.
This world was not a place for us.
Two who had been bound by noble blood since birth… forced to live apart just to survive. If all we were doing was spending meaningless time in this world…
Then let us be reborn.
In a world where no one would shame us, we would live our lives together to the end.
And after that…
How many times have we been reborn?
I kept searching for you. For you alone. But…
We passed one another again and again.
We could never be born at the same time.
And even when we were, we were separated by distances too great, by ages too far apart… or by lives that were entirely different in status, in place, in everything.
And since then… sixteen hundred years have already passed.
To be able to meet you again…
I am truly…
truly…
happy.
So happy.
So, so happy.
