The Man in My Dream 〜

In the pitch-dark room, wrapped in my futon, I lay absentmindedly recalling the seascape at dusk.

Beyond the sea before me stretched the shadow of islands. Blue water, gentle waves, a pale sky, and the evening sun pouring down its light.

When had I ever gone to a place like that? More than that, why couldn’t I stop thinking about that scenery? I had come there by boat. By boat… but from where?

“Beyond this sea, where the sun sinks beyond the horizon... he is waiting.”

I stood facing the sea. The sun was just about to sink below the horizon. The ocean shimmered gold.

 Where is this?

 “Are you truly going?”

“That’s why I came all this way. From here on, a boat is the only way, isn’t it?”

“There is no telling whether you will arrive safely.”

“There’s no other way to reach him, is there?”

“Could you not reconsider, just once more?”

“I cannot leave him all alone. Besides… there is no longer any place for me in the capital.”

 Him?

 Who is “him”?

“Iyo is nothing like the capital — it is a lonely, rustic place. Even if you arrive safely, hardship awaits you there. Even so, will you still go?”

 “Yes. I’ve already decided.”

I will go to him. No matter what happens.

 To him.

 “Hurry, hurry!”

Low, gentle mountain ridges stretched into view. I was running across an open field, the wind pleasant against my skin.

A man was running ahead of me. It was him. Someone was chasing us from behind.

 “Please wait! Please wait!”

 “This way, this way!”

We slipped deep into the thicket. There stood a great tree, and beneath it, a large hollow. He took my hand and led me inside.

 “Careful now. Slowly, slowly.”

The hollow was only large enough for two people to squeeze into. Inside, we pressed close together, holding our breath. The voices searching for us gradually faded into the distance. Before long, the voices disappeared altogether. All that remained was the sound of the wind through the fields and the songs of birds.

 “Do you think they’re gone?”

 He lifted his face.

 “They’re gone.”

 Our eyes met.

 Heh… heh…

 Ahahaha.

 “It’s so quiet.”

All around us was wrapped in green, with sunlight filtering softly through the leaves.

“They must be in an uproar by now.”

 Heh heh.

“Let’s stay here a little longer.”

He gave me a mischievous smile. I could feel the warmth of his slightly sweat-damp skin so close beside me. We gazed straight into each other’s eyes. His eyes were gentle. His face was dignified, noble, and impossibly beautiful. He moved closer.

 “My lord...”

 I jolted awake.

The room was dark. The air felt cold. All I could see was the ceiling above me.

Still under the covers, I turned onto my side and pressed my fingers lightly against my lips. It still felt so real.

God… what kind of dream was that?

 But… Who was he?

 My chest wouldn’t stop fluttering.

 “Sotoko…”

A voice suddenly came from behind me.

I rolled over onto my back. My brother was sitting up in the dark.

 “You’re awake?”

“Yeah. I wanted to talk to you about something.”

“Huh? What’s with the serious face?”

 I pushed myself upright too.

My brother hesitated for a moment before speaking.

“It’s about a really, really long time ago. I was put on a boat… and came to this land.”

 “…Wait, what?”

“A story from before I was born into this world. No… way before even that.”

 I stared at him blankly.

“…Miko, what are you even talking about?”
