"Primrose"

#3 Motion and Stillness

The next day, as Seira listened to her client's words in the counseling room, she happened to glance out the window at the trees swaying in the wind. The rustling of the leaves sounded somehow like the resonance of a viola—and she snapped back to attention.

*No. I'm at work.*

Even as she scolded herself, there was a part of her that wanted to hear that sound again.

An SR400 was parked in front of the counseling room.

As always, Seira stepped onto the tandem footrest and wrapped her arms around Hayashi's waist.

Her three-year relationship with Hayashi remained calm and uneventful. His apartment always smelled the same—the scent of fabric softener and the slightly bitter aftertaste of coffee beans. The coffee he brewed was always the same temperature, always the same flavor. When she stayed over, he efficiently made pasta and brewed coffee. They'd sit side by side on the sofa and watch Netflix.

"Are you tired?"

"I'm fine. What about you, Hayashi?"

"Busy, but managing."

Seira sat on the sofa, staring at the mug in her hands. The warmth of the ceramic spread slowly through her palms. That warmth was a curse.

In front of him, she always had to be the "good girlfriend." She was afraid to show any other side of herself.

—Maybe I'd forgotten how to cry.

She set the mug down on the table. The ceramic met the wood grain with a soft *clunk*. The sound seemed unnaturally loud.

Seira stood up. Her reflection in the window looked perfectly composed. It was the "good face" she showed Hayashi.

—I don't want to see this face anymore.

She touched her own cheek. Her skin was cold.

"Hayashi..."

Hayashi said nothing. He stood up and gently pulled Seira into his arms. They moved to the bedroom, and a calm, quiet time passed.

She had no complaints. No reason to refuse. In Hayashi's arms, Seira simply closed her eyes and accepted the warmth, as always.

But when it was over—

Hayashi had already turned his back on the bed, breathing evenly, fast asleep.

In the dark room, she buried her face in the towel blanket. Behind her closed eyelids, it wasn't Hayashi's face that appeared.

*No. Not now...*

In her ears, the viola was singing. That sound, quietly crying while supporting the lead.

That sound alone never left her ears.

*I'm awful*, she murmured in her heart.

Hayashi was kind.

So kind.

So why was her heart always searching for that viola's sound?

But she couldn't help it. She wanted that sound, and that smile.

Clutching the towel blanket tightly, Seira let out a small, silent breath that no one could hear.

November. Seira sat in a café in central Tokyo with Yasuko and Naruse, the three of them talking. She'd been so nervous, but once they met, it was as if they'd returned to middle school. Laughter filled the air. The breeze sweeping through the terrace seats was already fully autumnal.

"Is that a hamster in your icon?"

"Yeah, a golden hamster named Kumako."

When Naruse said that, his face softened in an instant. The mature profile from moments ago melted into something almost childlike.

"Named Kumako? A girl."

A professional violist making that face just from talking about a hamster—Seira couldn't help but laugh. That straightforward naming was so like him.

Naruse showed them his phone screen, and Yasuko exclaimed, "So cute!"

"Seira, want to see too?"

Their eyes met. On the small screen, the hamster was curled up asleep. Seira laughed.

Laughing like this, he seemed like an ordinary, down-to-earth thirty-year-old man, Seira thought. And yet, just a few weeks ago, he had been on stage making the viola sing as a professional MHK Symphony Orchestra violist. She couldn't reconcile him with the Naruse from middle school who had played violin alongside her.

Yasuko suddenly stood up and headed for the smoking area. As silence fell, Seira absentmindedly poured a ton of sugar and milk into her coffee.

"You like it sweet, huh."

"Oh, I just wanted to change the taste."

The terrace light seemed to be too bright, and Naruse narrowed his eyes.

"Hey. Why did you play 'Liebesleid' on my instrument back then?"

Naruse's eyes seemed to widen for just a moment, but then he looked down and murmured quietly.

"...I think music is a way to say what words can't."

Just then, Yasuko returned. She smelled of the cigarette she'd just finished, and she sat down as if nothing had happened. But Seira noticed her eyes dart between them for a moment.

Yasuko picked up the menu as if nothing was amiss.

"I'll have another coffee. Does anyone want anything?"

"Oh, I want a donut."

"You like sweets? Me too."

Naruse stared at Seira. She looked away instinctively and took a sip of her overly sweet coffee.

"So why the viola? It doesn't stand out like the violin, does it?"

When Yasuko asked, Naruse thought for a moment.

"There's this violist called Primrose. I was just so moved by how incredible the viola could be."

The conversation bloomed with memories from middle school and updates on their current lives. How Yasuko had dyed her hair blonde and quit the club. How Seira had been picked up with Yasuko and ridden in a police car. How Yasuko had married a police officer. Naruse's orchestra tours. Seira's counseling room. It was a happy time. But somewhere in Seira's heart, Naruse's words from earlier kept echoing.

—I think music is a way to say what words can't.

Had that "Liebesleid" been a substitute for something Naruse couldn't put into words? Or was it simply his aesthetic as a musician? Seira still didn't have the courage to find out.

"I'd like to play violin again. I thought about joining an orchestra in college, but everyone was so young."

"Wait, you went to college? I thought you didn't go to high school or college."

"Actually, Yasuko got her high school equivalency later."

Seira said this, and Naruse looked thoughtful. He opened his leather bag and pulled out some A4 sheets.

"There's an amateur orchestra in Tokyo that I'll be guest performing with. If you want to pick up your instrument again, an amateur orchestra is an option too."

"Wow! It says Harold in Italy! ...I have no idea what that is though."

Seira and Yasuko took the flyers, and without needing to say it, they'd silently promised to meet again.

About an hour later, Yasuko checked her phone and said, "We should probably head out." At the station platform, Yasuko boarded the train first. The doors closed, and they waved. Left behind were just Seira and Naruse.

"Want to come see the hamster?"

The sudden invitation made Seira question her ears. Naruse lived in central Tokyo. Seira lived with her grandmother, who was showing signs of dementia, in Yokohama.

"My place is far, so..."

"Yeah, sorry. Never mind."

With a feeling of reluctance, Seira shook her head slightly.

"...Maybe another time."

She felt her heart skip again at her own words. She was practically inviting him. She had a boyfriend, Hayashi, and yet what was she doing? A flicker of guilt crossed her mind, but the urge to see more of Naruse's profile won out.

Naruse looked a little surprised, then smiled very gently and said,

"Then, another time. Whenever you want."

"Yeah."

Just then, the train arrived at the platform with a clatter. It coincided with the evening rush hour. They were swept along by the crowd and pushed into the train.

As the doors closed, Seira and Naruse's bodies were pressed together. She could feel her heart pounding, and she lowered her eyes in embarrassment.

Back at her apartment, her grandmother was asleep in the living room with the TV still on. She must have dozed off. Seira gently placed a blanket over her. These moments had been increasing lately. Seira let out a small sigh, but looking at her grandmother's sleeping face on the sofa brought her a small sense of relief. She wished this could last forever. With that thought, she headed to the kitchen.

She prepared the next morning's breakfast. Suddenly, she remembered Naruse's face when he'd said, "You like sweets?" What should she have said back then?

She turned off the stove. She realized she'd let the miso soup boil over.

"Oh no, the flavor's ruined..."

The counseling room continued to pass in its usual calm.

She loved this work. Staying close to the loneliness and pain of the person in front of her, gently unraveling the knots in their heart—for Seira, it was her very reason for being.

On the wall was an A4 flyer that read "Community Orchestra 38th Regular Concert." Next to Naruse's photo were the words "Harold in Italy / Berlioz," "Viola Soloist: Naruse Shun, MHK Symphony Orchestra." Every time she told a client that "he was my classmate in middle school," she felt proud.

That night, when she returned to the apartment, her grandmother was lying down.

"Grandma, are you okay?"

"Welcome back. I have a fever. I'll take a taxi to the doctor tomorrow, so you can go to the counseling room."

"I'll take you in the Wagon R. Do you have an appetite?"

The concert was the next evening. Seira picked up the ticket, set it down on the desk, picked it up again, and set it down again.

"Just a normal cold. Please rest for two or three days."

"Thank goodness it's not COVID."

Even in moments like this, her grandmother never lost her lightness. Seira had always been saved by that brightness.

She gripped the steering wheel of the Wagon R and headed home. Tonight, she had to stay by her grandmother's side.

"Seira, you don't have to worry about me. It's Naruse-kun's big night, isn't it."

Her grandmother said from the passenger seat. Her voice lacked its usual strength.

"No. I'm staying with you today."

After making sure her grandmother was in bed, Seira let out a relieved sigh. She picked up her phone and typed a message to Yasuko.

"I won't be able to make it to Harold in Italy."
