第12話 ツギハギのともだちと、かしこい子犬（The Patched-Up Friend and the Clever Pup）
それは科学も魔法もある、こことは別の世界。
This is a world where both science and magic exist, a world different from ours.
今日の魔法学校の授業は、「自分の家から持ってきたお気に入りのぬいぐるみを操る魔法」です。
Today's class at the magic school is about "magic to control your favorite stuffed animals brought from home."
ジャックスが家から持ってきたのは、片手で抱えられるくらいの大きさの、ティラノサウルスのぬいぐるみでした。
Jax had brought a Tyrannosaurus stuffed animal from home, about the size he could hold in one hand.
「よーし、いくぞ！ 魔法まぜまぜ、ガオーッと吠えて走り回れ！ エイッ！」
"Alright, here we go! Magic Mix, roar with a 'Grrr!' and run around! Yah!"
ジャックスが杖を振ると、ティラノサウルスのぬいぐるみはピョコピョコと元気に走り回り、みんなを怖がらせるように「ガオーッ！」と吠えました。
As Jax waved his wand, the Tyrannosaurus stuffed animal ran around energetically with a "pitter-patter," and let out a roar, "Grrr!", trying to scare everyone.
でも、サイズが小さくて可愛いので、誰も怖がりません。それどころか、アイビーやガスは「かわいいね」とニコニコ笑っています。
However, because of its small and cute size, nobody was scared at all. Instead, Ivy and Gus smiled, saying, "How cute."
その反応が気に入らなかったジャックスは、ティラノサウルスのぬいぐるみに、アイビーのぬいぐるみを攻撃するよう命令しました。
Displeased with their reaction, Jax ordered his Tyrannosaurus stuffed animal to attack Ivy's toy.
「なんだよ、怖くないのか？ だったら突撃だ！ アイビーのフクロウをやっつけろ！」
"What, you're not scared? Then charge! Go get Ivy's owl!"
しかし、アイビーが持ってきたのは、セージグリーンのリボンを巻いた、本物のように羽がフワフワしたフクロウのぬいぐるみでした。
However, Ivy had brought a stuffed owl with a sage green ribbon and feathers as fluffy as a real bird's.
ジャックスのティラノサウルスがドタドタと走ってきても、アイビーが優しく杖を振って魔法をかけます。
Even as Jax's Tyrannosaurus came charging with a heavy thud, Ivy gently waved her wand and cast a spell.
「魔法まぜまぜ、お空をパタパタ飛んで避けてね……。エイッ」
"Magic Mix, please flap your wings and fly to the sky to dodge... Yah."
すると、フクロウのぬいぐるみは本物の鳥のように羽ばたき、ふわりと宙に浮いて、ティラノサウルスの攻撃をあっさりと避けてしまいました。
With that, the stuffed owl flapped its wings like a real bird, floated softly into the air, and easily dodged the Tyrannosaurus's attack.
ジャックスは悔しそうに言いました。
「おいおい、ずるいぞ！ ぬいぐるみなのに空を飛ぶなんて反則だろ！」
Jax said, looking frustrated,
"Hey, that's cheating! Flying in the sky even though you're a stuffed animal is against the rules!"
アイビーは胸の前で両手をぎゅっと握りしめて、はにかみながら優しく注意します。
「もう、ひとのぬいぐるみをいきなり攻撃するジャックスの方が悪いよ……」
Ivy squeezed her hands tightly in front of her chest and gently scolded him with a shy smile,
"Geez, you're the one in the wrong for suddenly attacking someone else's stuffed animal, Jax..."
それでも納得がいかなかったジャックスが次に狙ったのは、ガスのぬいぐるみです。
Still not satisfied, Jax next targeted Gus's stuffed animal.
「ちぇっ、だったら次はガスだ！ お前のパンダを倒してやるぜ！」
"Cheh, then Gus is next! I'll defeat your panda!"
ガスが持ってきたのは、ガス自身の体と同じくらい大きな、ふっくらとしたジャイアントパンダのぬいぐるみでした。
Gus had brought a plump giant panda stuffed animal that was about as big as his own body.
すでに魔法をかけられているパンダは、ポテトチップスを「モグモグ」と食べているガスの真横で、おっとりと笹の葉をバリバリと美味しそうにかじっています。
The panda, which had already been cast with magic, was calmly and deliciously crunching on bamboo leaves right next to Gus, who was happily munching on potato chips.
「アイツ、でかいけどあんなにのんびりしてるなら、俺のティラノサウルスでも勝てるかもしれないぞ！」
「いけ、突進だ！ パンダを押し倒せ！」
"He's huge, but since he's so laid-back, my Tyrannosaurus might actually stand a chance!"
"Go, charge! Knock that panda down!"
ジャックスがティラノサウルスを向かわせると、ジャイアントパンダのぬいぐるみはおっとりとそちらを向きます。
As Jax sent his Tyrannosaurus over, the giant panda stuffed animal slowly turned toward it.
そして、おにぎりのような大きな手で「エイッ！」と優しく手を一振りしただけでした。
And, with its large hand shaped like an onigiri, it simply gave a gentle wave, "Yah!"
それだけで、ティラノサウルスはポンッとはね返され、ジャックスの足元までゴロゴロと転がっていってしまいます。
With just that, the Tyrannosaurus was bounced off with a pop and went rolling all the way back to Jax's feet.
「モグモグ、僕のパンダは強いよ？」
と、ガスはのんきにポテトチップスを食べながら言いました。
"*Munch, munch*, my panda is strong, you know?"
Gus said calmly, eating his potato chips.
負けてばかりでいよいよ面白くないジャックスが、最後に狙ったのはドットのぬいぐるみでした。
Having lost every matchup and getting frustrated, the last target Jax set his eyes on was Dot's stuffed animal.
「こうなったら、ドット！ お前のぬいぐるみと勝負だ！」
"In that case, Dot! Let's battle with your stuffed animal!"
ドットが持ってきたのは、いつも一緒にベッドで抱きしめて寝ている、イグアナのぬいぐるみです。
Dot had brought an iguana stuffed animal that was about as big as her own body, which she always hugged and slept with in her bed.
ドットの魔法はすでにかけ終わっているようでしたが、ドットが「動いて」と言っても、イグアナはちっとも動いてくれません。
Dot's spell seemed to have already been cast, but even when she said "Move!", the iguana wouldn't budge at all.
それどころか、大きなあくびをして、そのままベッドの上のように気持ちよさそうにスヤスヤと寝ているようでした。
Instead, it let out a big yawn and fell fast asleep, looking cozy as if it were on a bed.
「ハハハ！ 言うことを聞かないぬいぐるみなら、俺のティラノサウルスでも絶対に勝てるぜ！ 突撃だ！」
"Ha ha ha! If it's a stuffed animal that won't listen to instructions, my Tyrannosaurus will definitely win! Charge!"
ジャックスの思った通り、イグアナの方がサイズは大きかったですが、のんきに寝ていたので、ティラノサウルスはイグアナのお腹に「ガブッ！」とかみつくことができました。
Just as Jax thought, although the iguana was larger in size, it was sleeping so peacefully that the Tyrannosaurus easily bit "Chomp!" onto the iguana's stomach.
「あっ、ひどい！ ジャックス、やめて！ 放してよ！」
"Ah, that's terrible! Jax, stop it! Let go!"
ドットは慌ててイグアナのしっぽを引っ張って取り戻そうとしますが、魔法がかかったティラノサウルスはガチッと噛みついたまま、どうしても放してくれません。
Dot hurriedly pulled the iguana's tail to get it back, but the magical Tyrannosaurus clamped down hard and refused to let go no matter what.
二人が全力で引っ張り合ったその時、ビリッ！ と鈍い音が響きました。
Just as the two pulled with all their strength, a dull rip sound echoed through the room.
引っ張る力に耐えきれなくなったイグアナのぬいぐるみのお腹が大きく裂けて、中から白いわたがフワフワとたくさん飛び出してしまったのです。
Unable to withstand the pulling force, the stuffed iguana's stomach ripped wide open, and a lot of fluffy white stuffing came billowing out from the inside.
「ああっ……！ 私の大好きなイグアナさんが……！」
"Ah...! My beloved Mr. Iguana...!"
お腹が破けて、わたがはみ出してしまったイグアナを見て、ドットの目からポロポロと大きな涙がこぼれ落ちました。
Looking at her iguana with its torn stomach and stuffing spilling out, huge tears began to spill from Dot's eyes.
「いつも一緒に寝ていた、一番大切なぬいぐるみだったのに……ひどいよ！ えーん、えーん！」
"It was my most precious stuffed animal that I always slept with... You're so mean! *Wah, wah!*"
ドットが大泣きしてしまい、ジャックスはさすがにやりすぎたと真っ青になり、慌てて頭を下げます。
Dot's loud crying made Jax turn pale as he realized he had gone too far, and he hurriedly bowed his head in apology.
「わっ、ごめん！ ドット、本当にごめん！ そんなに大切なお気に入りだとは知らなかったんだ……！」
"Whoa, I'm sorry! Dot, I'm so sorry! I didn't know it was such a precious favorite of yours...!"
そこに、今日も授業のお手伝いとして来ていた、綺麗な縦ロールのハーフアップの上級生、アリスが歩み寄ってきました。
Then, Alice, the upperclassman with beautiful gold ringlets in a half-updo who was there as a teaching assistant again today, stepped forward.
「オーホッホ！ 何を泣いているの、ドット。わたがはみ出たくらいでみっともないわね」
"Ohoho! What are you crying about, Dot? Making such a fuss over a bit of spilled stuffing is quite unseemly."
アリスはいつものようにツンとすまして言いましたが、泣きじゃくるドットを放っておけない様子で、そっと肩を叩きます。
Alice spoke with her usual haughty tone, but unable to ignore the weeping Dot, she gently patted her on the shoulder.
「ちょうど私の家に、科学と魔法で作られた『最新のぬいぐるみ』があるから、特別にプレゼントしてあげるわ！」
"It just so happens that we have the 'latest stuffed animals' made with science and magic at my house, so I will give you one as a special present!"
「最新のぬいぐるみ……？」
ドットは涙をゴシゴシと拭いて、アリスの言葉に耳を傾けました。
"The latest stuffed animal...?"
Dot rubbed her tears away and listened to Alice's words.
どんなぬいぐるみなのか気になったドットたちは、学校の後にアリスの家へついていくことにします。
Curious about what kind of stuffed animals they were, Dot and the others decided to follow Alice to her house after school.
アリスの大豪邸に着くと、出迎えてくれたのはアリスの父親であるエース博士でした。
When they arrived at Alice's grand mansion, they were welcomed by Alice's father, Dr. Ace.
「おや、アリスのお友達かい？ よく来たね」
エース博士はダブルボタンのフロックコートをスマートに着こなし、優雅に微笑みます。
"Oh, are these Alice's friends? Welcome."
Dr. Ace smiled elegantly, looking sharp in his double-breasted frock coat.
そして、ドットが抱えていた、お腹からわたがはみ出したイグアナのぬいぐるみを見て、深くうなずきました。
Then, looking at the stuffed iguana Dot was holding with stuffing spilling from its belly, he gave a deep nod.
「なるほど、それは可哀想に。よし、私の研究室の最新の仲間たちを紹介しよう」
"I see, how pitiful. Very well, let me introduce you to the latest companions from my laboratory."
エース博士が家の奥の広いプレイルームから連れてきたのは、たくさんの可愛い動物たちでした。
From the spacious playroom in the back of the house, Dr. Ace brought out many cute animals.
ピョンピョンと跳ねるうさぎ、毛並みがツヤツヤした猫、尾を振る子犬。
A rabbit hopping around, a cat with shiny fur, and a puppy wagging its tail.
しかし、よく見ると、それらは本物の動物ではなく、発明の力で本物のように動く、完璧に作られたロボットのぬいぐるみだったのです！
However, looking closely, they weren't real animals, but perfectly crafted robotic stuffed animals that moved just like real ones through the power of science!
「これは私の最新発明のAIペットだ。ご飯をあげる必要もないし、お手もお座りも完璧にできる。どれでも好きなものを一匹、連れて帰りなさい」
"These are my latest inventions, the AI pets. They don't need to be fed, and they can do tricks like shake and sit perfectly. Take whichever one you like home with you."
「わあ……！ 本物の子犬みたいに可愛い！」
ドットは目を輝かせてお礼を言うと、ふわふわした白い子犬のぬいぐるみを抱きしめ、連れて帰ることにしました。
"Wow...! It's as cute as a real puppy!"
With her eyes sparkling, Dot thanked him, hugged a fluffy white puppy stuffed animal, and decided to take it home.
自分の家に帰ると、ドットはさっそく父親である博士に事情を説明し、本物のように動く子犬を見せます。
Upon returning home, Dot immediately explained the situation to her father, Doc, and showed him the puppy that moved just like a real one.
「見て博士！ エース博士の発明なの！ お手もお座りもできるんだよ！」
"Look, Doc! It's Dr. Ace's invention! It can do 'shake' and 'sit'!"
ドットはそう言うと、お腹が破けてわたがはみ出してしまったイグアナのぬいぐるみをリビングのソファにぽつんと置いて、新しい子犬を連れて嬉しそうに自分の部屋へ戻ってしまいました。
After saying that, Dot left her torn iguana stuffed animal lying all alone on the living room sofa, and happily went back to her room with her new puppy.
博士はドットの後ろ姿と、リビングにポツンと残された、お腹からわたを流しているイグアナのぬいぐるみを見つめます。
Doc stared at Dot's retreating back, and then at the iguana stuffed animal left all alone in the living room, with stuffing spilling from its belly.
博士はいつもより静かな顔で、何かを深く考えているようでした。
Doc had a quieter expression than usual, seemingly lost in deep thought.
そして、わたのはみ出たイグアナのぬいぐるみを持って、静かに自分の研究室へと向かいます。
Then, he picked up the torn iguana stuffed animal and quietly headed toward his laboratory.
その頃、自分の部屋に戻ったドットは、新しい白い子犬のぬいぐるみと遊んで大はしゃぎしていました。
Meanwhile, back in her room, Dot was having a blast playing with her new white puppy stuffed animal.
「お座り！ お手！ わあ、すごい、本当に私の言う通りに動いてくれる！」
"Sit! Shake! Wow, amazing, it really moves exactly as I say!"
かしこくて可愛い子犬に、ドットは大満足でした。
Dot was completely satisfied with the smart and cute puppy.
しかし、夜になってベッドに入り、一緒に寝ようと子犬をぎゅっと抱きしめた時です。
However, when night fell and she got into bed, she tightly hugged the puppy to sleep with it.
「あれ……？ なんだか……冷たくて、ゴツゴツしているな……」
"Huh...? It feels... somehow cold and hard..."
中身が機械でできているその子犬は、本物のぬいぐるみのフカフカした柔らかさがなく、抱きしめるとゴツゴツしていました。
The puppy, made of machinery inside, lacked the fluffy softness of a real stuffed animal. When hugged, the hard machinery inside pressed uncomfortably against her body.
ドットは子犬と一緒に眠るのをあきらめ、近くの床にクッションを置いて、そこに子犬用のベッドを作って寝かせてあげました。
Dot gave up on sleeping with the puppy, placed a cushion on the floor nearby, and made a bed for the puppy to sleep there.
「おやすみ、かしこいワンちゃん……。でも、やっぱり何か違うなぁ……」
"Good night, clever puppy... But still, something feels off..."
ドットは少し寂しい気持ちになりながら、ぽっかりと空いたベッドの横を見つめ、そのまま眠りにつきます。
Feeling a little lonely, Dot stared at the empty space beside her in bed before finally falling asleep.
翌朝、目が覚めてドットがリビングに行くと、そこで待っていたのは、目の下に真っ黒な「パンダのようなクマ」を作った寝不足の博士でした。
The next morning, when Dot woke up and went to the living room, waiting for her was Doc, looking exhausted with deep "panda-like circles" under his eyes from a lack of sleep.
博士はドットの顔を見ると、眠そうに、でも嬉しそうに「ニカッ」と笑います。
When Doc saw Dot's face, he grinned sleepily but happily, showing his bright white teeth.
「ハハハ……、おはよ、ドット。頼もしい機械もいいけれど、君にはやっぱり、これが一番似合っていると思ってね」
"Ha ha ha... morning, Dot. Reliable machines are nice, but I thought this one suits you best after all."
博士はそう言うと、背中に隠していたイグアナのぬいぐるみをドットに手渡しました。
Saying so, Doc handed Dot the stuffed iguana he had been hiding behind his back.
「あっ……！」
"Ah...!"
そのぬいぐるみは、お腹の裂けた部分がいろいろな色の布できれいに縫い合わされ、ツギハギだらけになっていました。
The stuffed animal had its ripped belly neatly sewn together with patches of various colorful fabrics, leaving it covered in stitches.
少しツギハギが不格好に見えましたが、中には新しいわたがたっぷりと詰め直されています。
Although the patches looked a bit clumsy, it was stuffed full of fresh, warm cotton inside.
ドットがそれをぎゅっと抱きしめてみると、いつも一緒に寝ていた、あの驚くほど柔らかくて温かい、優しい手触りそのものでした。
When Dot hugged it tightly, it had the exact same surprisingly soft, warm, and gentle texture of the friend she always slept with.
「博士……！ これ、直してくれたの？」
"Doc...! Did you fix this for me?"
「もちろんさ。夜通し針と糸を使ってね。魔法や複雑な科学じゃなくても、手仕事が一番温かいこともあるんだよ」
"Of course. I used a needle and thread all through the night. Sometimes, handmade work is the warmest, even without magic or complex science."
「ありがとう、博士！ やっぱり、この子が一番大好き！」
ドットは顔をほころばせ、ツギハギのイグアナを胸にぎゅっと抱きしめました。
"Thank you, Doc! This one is definitely my absolute favorite!"
Dot smiled warmly, hugging the patched-up iguana tightly to her chest.
ドットは博士にお礼を言うと、さっそく自分のベッドに、帰ってきたお友達を優しく寝かせてあげます。
After thanking Doc, Dot immediately tucked her returned friend gently back into her bed.
その日から、ドットはツギハギのイグアナを大切に抱きしめながら、近くのクッションの上で丸くなって眠る白い子犬のぬいぐるみと一緒に、毎晩温かく眠るようになりました。
From that day on, Dot slept warmly every night, tightly holding her patched-up iguana, alongside the white puppy stuffed animal curled up on the cushion nearby.
言うことをよく聞いてくれる、かしこいお人形も素敵です。
A clever toy that listens to everything you say is wonderful.
でも、傷だらけになっても直してもらいながら、ずっとそばにいてくれる古いお友達の温もりは、何ものにも代えがたい宝物です。
But the warmth of an old friend who stays by your side forever, even when they get hurt and need to be mended, is an irreplaceable treasure.
大切なのは、自分の言うことを聞いてくれるかじゃなくて、いつまでも一緒にいてくれるかだったのかもしれませんね。
The important thing wasn't whether they would listen to what you say, but whether they would stay by your side forever.
