第10話 博士 対 博士！ お料理対決！（Doc vs. Dr. Ace! The Cooking Showdown!）
それは科学も魔法もある、こことは別の世界。
This is a world where both science and magic exist, a world different from ours.
今日の魔法学校の授業は、「植物を成長させる魔法」です。
Today's class at the magic school is about "magic to make plants grow."
アイビーは葉っぱの野菜であるコラードグリーンを成長させて、集まってきた小鳥たちに優しく餌として食べさせています。
Ivy grew leafy collard greens and was gently feeding them to the little birds that had gathered around.
ガスはラズベリーを魔法でどんどん収穫してはモグモグと食べていて、指がすっかりラズベリー色に染まっていました。
Gus was magically harvesting raspberries one after another and munching on them, his fingers completely stained raspberry red.
ジャックスは、大きく育ったスナップエンドウを生のままモリモリと豪快に食べています。
Jax was vigorously crunching on fully grown snap peas right off the vine.
「すげー！ 採れたての野菜って甘くて美味しいぜ！」
"Awesome! Freshly picked vegetables are sweet and delicious!"
そんな風に楽しむみんなを見て、ドットも自分も挑戦しようと鉢植えに種を撒きました。
Seeing everyone having such a good time, Dot decided to try it herself and planted a seed in a pot.
「よーし！ 大好きなチェリートマトよ、いっぱい実ってね！ 魔法まぜまぜ、大きくなーれ！ エイッ！」
"Alright! My favorite cherry tomatoes, bear lots of fruit! Magic Mix, Grow Big! Yah!"
ボフン！ と白い煙が上がり、鉢植えから立派な植物が生えてきます。
Puff! White smoke rose, and a splendid plant sprouted from the pot.
しかし、どうしたことでしょう。チェリートマトの種を撒いたはずなのに、そこに生えていたのはモコモコとした緑色のブロッコリーでした！
But what's this? She was sure she planted a cherry tomato seed, yet what grew there was a fluffy green broccoli!
「うぇ〜！ 大失敗だわ！ 私、ブロッコリーって大嫌い！」
"Ew~! A huge failure! I absolutely hate broccoli!"
ドットはとても嫌そうな顔をして、ブロッコリーを遠ざけました。
Dot made a very disgusted face and pushed the broccoli away.
そこに、今日も授業の補佐として来ていた上級生のアリスが近づいてきます。
Then, Alice, the upperclassman who was there as a teaching assistant again today, approached her.
「オーホッホ！ 魔法の失敗はいつものことだけど、食べ物の好き嫌いは良くないわね。私の家に来れば、苦手な食べ物も美味しくしてあげるわよ」
"Ohoho! Failing at magic is your usual routine, but being a picky eater is no good. If you come to my house, I can make even the food you hate taste delicious."
「えっ、本当！？ 何か美味しいお料理が食べられるの？」
"Eh, really!? Can we eat some delicious dishes?"
気になったドットたちが学校の後にアリスの家へついていくと、そこにはアリスの父親である「エース博士」が待っていました。
Curious, Dot and the others followed Alice to her house after school, where Alice's father, "Dr. Ace," was waiting.
「ええっ！ アリスのお父さんって、街で有名なあの天才、エース博士だったの！？」
"Ehh! Alice's father is that famous genius in town, Dr. Ace!?"
アイビーやジャックスは目を丸くして驚きます。
Ivy and Jax widened their eyes in surprise.
エース博士は自信満々に笑うと、ある小瓶を取り出しました。
Dr. Ace smiled confidently and took out a small bottle.
「ようこそ。どんな嫌いなものでも、自分の好きな味にしてしまう『マジックスパイス』だよ！」
"Welcome. This is the 'Magic Spice,' which turns anything you hate into your favorite flavor!"
エース博士は、ドットが持ってきたブロッコリーをただお湯で茹でて、そこにパラパラと魔法のスパイスを振りかけました。
Dr. Ace simply boiled the broccoli Dot brought with her, and sprinkled the magic spice over it.
「さあ、食べてごらん」
"Now, give it a try."
ブロッコリーは、ドットだけじゃなく、子供たちみんなが苦手な野菜です。
Broccoli was a vegetable that not only Dot, but all the children disliked.
でも、みんなで嫌な顔をしながら、勇気を出して一口食べてみると……あら不思議！
But, as they all gathered their courage and took a bite with reluctant faces... what a surprise!
「わあ、香ばしい木の実のような味がするわ！」とアイビー。
"Wow, it tastes like roasted nuts!" said Ivy.
「モグモグ……本当だ、甘ーいドーナツみたいな味がするよ！」とガス。
"Munch, munch... It's true, it tastes like a sweet donut!" said Gus.
「すげー！ これ、焼きたてのステーキの味だぜ！」とジャックス。
"Awesome! This tastes like a freshly grilled steak!" said Jax.
そしてドットは、大好きなチーズクラッカーのような味がしました。
And for Dot, it tasted like her favorite Goldfish.
本当に、同じスパイスを振りかけているだけなのに、それぞれの好きな食べ物の味がしたのです。
It was truly amazing; even though they were just sprinkled with the exact same spice, it tasted like each of their favorite foods.
「これはすごい発明だわ！」
"This is an amazing invention!"
感動したドットはエース博士にそのスパイスを少し分けてもらい、家に持ち帰って自分の父親である博士（Doc）に紹介しました。
Impressed, Dot asked Dr. Ace to share some of the spice, took it home, and introduced it to her own father, Doc.
「見て博士！ エース博士の発明、すごいでしょ！」
"Look, Doc! Dr. Ace's invention is amazing, isn't it!"
しかし、ライバルであるエース博士の発明を褒められて、博士はどこか不満げな顔になり、そのまま自分の研究室にプイッと籠ってしまいました。
However, upon hearing his rival Dr. Ace's invention being praised, Doc got a somewhat displeased look on his face and promptly shut himself in his lab.
次の日の朝。
The next morning.
ドットがマジックスパイスをかけた朝ごはんを食べていると、目の下にクマを作った博士がやってきました。
As Dot was eating breakfast sprinkled with the magic spice, Doc walked in with bags under his eyes.
「ハハハ！ 魔法のスパイスに頼らなくても、これを使えばいい！ 僕の最新発明『レシピメガネ』だ！」
"Ha ha ha! You don't need to rely on magic spices when you use this! My latest invention: The Recipe Glasses!"
そのメガネは、見つめた食材を活かした『美味しいお料理のレシピ』がレンズに表示されるだけのものでした。
Those glasses simply displayed a "delicious recipe" on the lenses that made the best use of the ingredients you looked at.
いつもとんでもない発明をする博士にしては、とても普通の発明です。
For Doc, who always invents things with outrageous functions, it was a very normal invention.
しかし、博士はさっそくその「レシピメガネ」をかけて、残っていたブロッコリーを料理し始めました。
However, Doc immediately put on the "Recipe Glasses" and started cooking the leftover broccoli.
チーン！ オーブンから出てきた料理は、「ブロッコリー・チーズ・キャセロール」。
Ding! The dish that came out of the oven was "Broccoli Cheese Casserole."
細かく切ったブロッコリーをチーズソースやマッシュルームスープの缶詰と混ぜ合わせ、砕いたクラッカーやフライドオニオンをバターと一緒にたっぷり敷き詰めて焼いたお料理です。
It was a dish made by mixing finely chopped broccoli with canned cheese sauce and mushroom soup, topped generously with crushed crackers and fried onions along with butter, and baked.
ドットが一口食べてみると……。
When Dot took a bite…
「サクッ！ トロ〜リ……わあ、すっごく美味しい！」
"Crunch! Gooey... Wow, it's so delicious!"
上はサクサク・カリカリで、中はチーズでトロトロ。
The top was crispy and crunchy, and the inside was gooey with cheese.
ブロッコリーを食べているなんて信じられないくらい美味しくて、ドットの食べる手が止まりません。
It was so delicious she couldn't believe she was eating broccoli, and Dot couldn't stop eating.
それからしばらく経つと、街の人たちは博士の作った「レシピメガネ」を使って楽しくお料理をする人が増えました。
After a while, more and more people in the town started enjoying cooking using the "Recipe Glasses" Doc made.
その代わりに、エース博士の「何でも好きな味になるマジックスパイス」は、あまり売れなくなってしまいました。
Instead, Dr. Ace's "Magic Spice that turns anything into your favorite flavor" wasn't selling as well.
発明品勝負で負けてしまい、エース博士は自分の家で「くやしいー！」と悔しがっています。
Having lost the invention showdown, Dr. Ace was frustrated at his house, crying "I'm so frustrated!"
でも、エース博士はそんなことを言いながらも、アリスがレシピメガネをかけて作ってくれた手料理を「美味しい、美味しい」と言いながら食べているのでした。
But even while saying that, Dr. Ace was eating the home-cooked meal Alice had made for him using the Recipe Glasses, saying, "Delicious, delicious."
大切なのは、嫌いなものを好きなものに変えてしまう力では無くて、嫌いなものと仲直りできる力だったのかもしれませんね。
The important thing wasn't the power to change things you hate into things you love, but the power to make peace with the things you hate.
