第十二章 ゴディバ・レジェンデール・トリュフ（７）
二月の第二木曜日。
「お前に面会だぞ」
厨房のチーフに言われて、思わず、
「は？」
と訊き返した。
「女の子。昨日も来たんだが、お前は休みだったからな。寒いから早く行ってやれ」
強面に似合わず優しいところのあるチーフは、裏口を指さすとサッとまた厨房の奥へと引っこんだ。
女の子って誰だろう。
「チョコレートなら店に入ってもらってから受けとれよ」
店長が冗談めかして言った。
確かにここ一週間、店にいる時に何人かの女の子からチョコレートをもらったけど、わざわざ裏口に呼び出されることはなかった。店長も客として来るなら文句もないようだった。一瞬サキの顔を思い浮かべたが、サキは俺の休みを知っているし、なにより今は出張中のはずだ。
不思議に思いながら裏口を開けると、戸の影でゴミ箱の間にはさまるようにしてミワがひっそりと立っていたので、驚いてしまった。ミワとはあの夜以来、会うどころか話もしていなかった。
ミワの顔はこれ以上ないというくらいに寒そうに青ざめていた。手には何も持っていない。するといったいなんの用なのか。
「どうしたの？」
訊いても、ミワはチラリと俺を見上げ、またうつむいて黙ったままだ。
「久しぶりだね」「なんか、用？」「黙っていちゃ分かんないよ」色々言葉を変えてもウンともスンとも言わないので、俺はだんだんイライラしてきた。こっちは仕事中なんだよ。
「今日は仕事、休みなの？」
するとようやく答えが返ってきた。
「仕事はやめたの」
「あ、そうなの」
俺は上の空で返事をした。
ミワがもう一度、目を上げる。
「具合が悪いから」
「どっか病気なの？」
「……妊娠したの」
「え？」
「つわりがひどくて」
ツワリ、ニンシン……。俺は腕組みをしてダラリとクモの巣がかかったままのうす暗い照明を見ながら、心の中で繰り返した。それって、どういう……。
「えぇっ！」
ついデカイ声を出すと、ミワはとたんにワッと泣き出した。
「どうしよう、イチイ。あたし、どうしたらいいの？ ずうっと考えてたけど、分かんなくて……。子どもなんか産めないよ、育てられないよ。でも堕ろすにもお金がないし……」
「ちょっと待って」
俺はオロオロしてミワの顔をのぞきこんだ。ミワはグシャグシャに泣いていて、マスカラとか頬紅とか色んなものがはげ落ちていた。俺だってミワに負けないくらい動揺して頭の中が真っ白になりかけていたが、大事な一点だけは確認しておく必要があった。
「なんで、そのことを俺に言いにきたの？」
ミワは恨めしげな目で俺をじっと見つめた。
「だって、イチイとの子だもん」
嘘だろ……。
しかしそう言わせないほど強いなにかがミワの全身から発せられていて、俺はただ言葉と一緒にゴクリと唾を呑みこんだ。
The second Thursday of February.
“You’ve got a visitor.”
When the head chef said that, I asked without thinking,
“Huh?”
“A girl. She came yesterday too, but you were off. It’s cold, so go see her now.”
The chef, tough-looking but unexpectedly kind, pointed toward the back door and slipped back into the kitchen again.
A girl—who could it be?
“If it’s chocolate, have her come in first, then take it,”
the manager said jokingly.
True, over the past week, while I was at the bar, a few girls had given me chocolate, but none had ever bothered to call me out to the back door. The manager didn’t seem to mind as long as they came as customers. For a moment Saki’s face came to mind, but she knows my days off, and besides, she should be on a business trip now.
Puzzled, I opened the back door, and there, in the shadow of the door, as if wedged between the trash bins, Miwa was standing quietly, so I was startled. Since that night, I hadn’t even spoken to her, let alone seen her.
Miwa’s face looked as pale as it could possibly be, as if from the cold. She wasn’t holding anything in her hands. Then what could she want?
“What’s wrong?”
When I asked, Miwa only glanced up at me, then lowered her eyes again and remained silent.
“Long time no see.” “Do you need something?” “I won’t know if you don’t say anything.”
Even when I tried different words and she didn’t say a thing, I was starting to get irritated. I’m in the middle of work.
“Are you off work today?”
At last she answered.
“I quit my job.”
“Oh.”
I answered absentmindedly.
Miwa lifted her eyes once more.
“I’m not feeling well.”
“Are you sick?”
“…I’m pregnant.”
“What?”
“The morning sickness has been bad.”
Morning sickness. Pregnant… I crossed my arms and looked up at the dim light overhead, with cobwebs hanging from it, repeating the words in my head. What does that mean…?
“What?!”
I raised my voice without meaning to, and Miwa immediately burst into tears.
“What am I supposed to do, Ichii? What should I do? I’ve been thinking about it for so long, but I don’t know… I can’t have a baby. I can’t raise one. But I don’t even have the money for an abortion…”
“Wait a second.”
Flustered, I leaned down to look at her face. Miwa was crying messily, her mascara and blush and all sorts of other makeup smeared and coming off. I was just as shaken as Miwa was, my head nearly going blank, but there was one important point I had to confirm.
“Why did you come to tell me that?”
Miwa fixed me with a resentful gaze.
“Because it’s our baby.”
No way…
But something so strong was emanating from her whole body that it stopped me from saying it, and I simply swallowed hard along with my words.
