「あー、やだね、これだから恋愛中の奴は鈍くって。……あの子、中学の時からお前に片想いしていたんだって。俺はね、さっきモデルに頼まれたの。お前と友達をとりもってほしいって。なんで俺がお前のために働かなくちゃいけないんだよ、と思ったけど、卒業して五年も経つのに一途に想っているあの子が気の毒だから、こうしてセッティングしてやったんじゃないか。俺の好意を無にするなよ」
そういう自分は、これを機にモデルを狙っているだけだろ。いや、そんなことよりも。
「なんでちゃんと言わないんだよ？ もう俺にはつき合っている彼女がいるって」
ゲゲ、とヒロが言った。
「どうしちゃったの、イチイ君。いつからそんな聖人君子になっちゃったのさ。お釈迦様も言ってるでしょ。嘘も方便だって。大乗仏教の真髄は広い心であらゆる人を救うところにあるのよ。それにそんなこと言ったら、あの子泣いちゃうよ。泣いたら抱いて慰めてあげないと。誰がそんなことするの。僕はモデルで手いっぱい。そしたらその役目は結局、君しかいないでしょ」
まくしたてて、そしていつもの口調に戻った。
「深く考えんなよ、イチイ。一生に一度の成人式の夜。かつての同級生と甘酸っぱい思い出をちょいと作っても、なんの罪にもならないよ。むしろ一人の純真な女の子の積年の想いを成仏させるっていう善行を積むわけだし、お前の彼女だって文句も言わないさ。それにつまりは知らぬが仏だからな。彼女とはいつだってできるだろ。でもあの子とは今夜しか会えないかも知れないんだぞ。一期一会だよ」
だからいちいち用法違いの言葉をはさむなっての。
「それともお前の彼女って、そんなに嫉妬深いの。一時間おきに電話をよこせとか？」
「いや全然」
「これから、その子のところに行かなくちゃいけないのか」
「別に……」
「じゃあ、なにがダメなんだよ？」
なにが、なんだろうね。俺にもよく分からない。ヒロの言うとおり黙っていれば分からないことだし、サキは離れている時のことを根掘り葉掘り訊くようなタイプじゃない。電話だって、するのはいつも俺のほうから……。
そこへ女の子たちが戻ってきた。喫茶店の子が、さっきと同じように俺の前に座る。化粧を直してきたみたいだ。くちびるに塗ったピンクのグロスがつやつやと光っている。ふわりとなにかの香水の匂いがした。目が合うと嬉しそうに笑った。確かに可愛い。ちょっとキツイ感じのモデルより俺のタイプだ。
俺はケータイを確認した。もちろんなんの着信もメールも入っていない。
隣ではヒロが「次の店へは四人で行こうぜ」なんて話している。女の子たちにも異存はないようだった。
俺はもう一度ケータイを確認した。九時十分だった。
向かいの子が訊いた。
「イチイ君。どうしたの？ さっきからケータイばっかり気にして。誰かからの連絡を待っているの？」
俺は慌ててケータイを閉じた。「いや。そんなこと、ないよ」
“Man, this is why guys in love are so dense. …Apparently, she’s had a crush on you since middle school. The model asked me just now to play matchmaker for you. Why do I have to work for you? I thought. But I felt sorry for her—five years after graduation and she’s still into you—so I arranged this. Don’t let it go to waste.”
You’re just using this as a chance to go after the model. No, that’s not the point—
“Why don’t you just tell her straight? That I already have a girlfriend.”
“Geez,” Hiro said.
“What’s wrong with you, Ichii-kun? Since when did you become such a holy man? Even the Buddha says that lies can be skillful means. The essence of Mahayana Buddhism lies in saving all people with an open heart. Besides, if you say that, she’ll cry. And if she cries, you’ll have to hold her and comfort her. Who’s going to do that, huh? I’m busy with the model. So in the end, that job falls to you, right?”
He rattled that off, then went back to his usual tone.
“Don’t think so hard, Ichii. It’s the once-in-a-lifetime night of your coming-of-age ceremony. If you make a slightly sweet-and-sour memory with a former classmate, it’s no crime. If anything, you’d be racking up merit—letting that innocent girl’s long-held feelings finally rest in peace. Your girlfriend won’t even complain. I mean, what you don’t know can’t hurt you. You can be with your girlfriend anytime. But you might only see that girl tonight. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.”
So stop throwing in words you’re using wrong.
“Or is your girlfriend that jealous? Like she makes you call every hour?”
“No, not at all.”
“Do you have to go see her after this?”
“Not really…”
“Then what’s the problem?”
What is it, anyway. I don’t really know myself. If I keep quiet like Hiro says, she wouldn’t find out. Saki isn’t the type to pry into what I do when we’re apart. I’m always the one who calls, anyway…
Just then the girls came back. The coffee shop girl sat across from me, just as before. It looked like she had touched up her makeup. The pink lip gloss on her lips gleamed. I caught a faint scent of some perfume. When our eyes met, she gave me a pleased smile. She really is cute. More my type than the slightly sharp model.
I checked my phone. Of course, there were no calls or messages.
Beside me, Hiro was saying, “Let’s go to the next place—the four of us.” The girls didn’t seem to object.
I checked my phone again. It was 9:10.
The girl across from me asked,
“Ichii-kun, what’s wrong? You’ve been checking your phone this whole time. Are you waiting to hear from someone?”
I quickly snapped it shut. “No. It’s nothing like that.”
