第5章：私はただ答えを探しに来ただけ
茶髪の少女が私たちのテーブルの前に立っていた。その表情は、何というか、少し奇妙で、無表情な顔つきは恐ろしかった。
「お菓子はありますか？」
「え、お菓子って言いました？」
（なぜお菓子を頼むのか理解できなかった。もっと砂糖が欲しいのだろうか？）
「お邪魔してすみません。葉月あわと申します。前のテーブルにお座りの奥様のメイドです。」
（よりによってメイドにお菓子を頼まれるなんて。こんなことは初めてだ。）
私はその場で何と言っていいかわからなかったが、お菓子がないと伝えようとしたその時、いつものように優しく甘いルミミナが、先ほど買ったお菓子を一つ彼女に手渡した。
「ルミミナ、そんなことしなくてもよかったのに…」
ルミミナは私を見た。
「困っている人がいたら、助けてあげなきゃいけないのよ。」
「ええ、わかりました。」
葉月は頭を下げた。
「どうもありがとうございます。お嬢様もきっと感謝します。」
そして、相変わらず無表情のまま、彼女は上司の席に戻った。
（なぜ上司は知らないんだろう…）私は席を立ち、葉月は自分でキャンディを頼みに来たが、まあいいか、私がひどい扱いをしない限りは。
「さて、ルミミナ、探し続けよう。きっと私たちを導いてくれる本に近づいているはずだ。」
「よかった。」
しかし、私が探し続けようとしたまさにその時、葉月が上司にひどい扱いを受けているのを目にした。上司は葉月に怒鳴りつけ、明らかにキャンディを断っていた。
「葉月、いいお菓子だって言ったでしょ。これ、今まで食べたことないわよ。」
「でも、ルドヴィカ様…」
「『様』なんか呼ばないで、役立たずのメイド！」
状況が本当に悪化していたので、介入せざるを得ませんでした。特に、二人がうるさくて（本当に気が散るんです）。
「おい、何様だか知らないけど、葉月をいじめるのはやめろよ。あの子はあのお菓子を手に入れるために一生懸命頑張ったんだぞ…」
「一体何様のつもりでそんな口の利き方をするんだ？」
「私は、誰かが他人を虐待するのを許すべきではない人間だと思う。誰だって見下されるべきじゃない。ましてや、努力や成果を理由に。それに、まるで壊れたブザーみたいにうるさいじゃないか。ここは図書館だぞ！」
「ブザーって何？」 「あなたのくだらない話には興味ないわ。護衛を呼ぶ前に出て行って。」
私は彼女を睨みつけた。返事をする前に、ルミミナが立ち上がり、私のそばにやってきた。
「お願いですから、やめてください。たった一つのキャンディーで争うなんて、おかしいでしょう？お願いですから、お嬢さん、できる限り同伴者を虐待しないでください。オーランド、戻って捜索を続けましょう。」
「わかった、いいよ。」
「ええ、わかったわ。運が良かったのよ。そうでなければ、私の護衛があなたを連れて行っていたわ。」
（なんて腹立たしい。）
ルミミナに少し腹を立てながらも、彼女の姿を見ると何もなかったかのように感じ、捜索を続けた。
「力学、物理学、そして数学との関係、ベクトル物理学、物理学と極限について調べましょう。次元やワームホールの仕組みについては何も触れないで。」
（でも、あんなポータルを開くには、ブラックホール100個分くらいのエネルギー、もしくは太陽300～500個分のエネルギーが必要になる。つまり、
10^49ジュールだ。そんなエネルギー、どこから手に入れればいいんだ？それに、危険すぎる。
「ルミミナ、何か見つかった？」
「ううん、でも何とかなると思う。元気出して！」
「ところで、ルミミナ、君をこの世界に連れてきた魔法を使ってみてくれないか？ただの思いつきだけど、うまくいくかもしれない。」
「ええ、でも特別な魔法のアイテムが必要なの。ここで見つかるとは思えないわ。」
私は本を探すふりをして、しばらくそこに留まった。本当は、ルミミナが自分の状況を心配しすぎないように、図書館に行こうと提案したのだ。もし私が彼女の立場だったら、きっと同じように悩んでいただろうし、それに…そうすれば彼女は私と一緒にいてくれるだろう（ふふふ）。 「オーランド、ここにも王族や貴族、魔法使いの継承者はいるの？」
「いや、ルミミナ、どうしてそんなことを聞くんだい？」
「だって、メイド長がさっき、彼女を呼ぶって言ってたし…」「護衛って」
「ふーん、そういう人のことなんて考えないで。ルミミナだって同じくらいうるさくて、偉そうにしてるわ。きっと甘やかされて育ったガキだし、それに護衛なんてほうき2本くらいでしょ、はは。」
私たちは二人で笑っていたが…
（聞こえてないといいんだけど）
目の前に気配を感じて振り返ると、葉月のボスが護衛を2人連れて立っていた。私はびっくりして顔をしかめた。
「何て言った？ なんてあだ名をつけようかな？ ああ、そうだ、『迷惑者』だ！」
葉月は「迷惑者」と大きく書かれた紙を持っていた。
「黙れ！ いや、もう行くから。これ以上時間を無駄にしたくない。」
数人が声を揃えて「シーッ、静かに！」と言った。
葉月の上司は憤慨した表情で席を立ち、自分の席に戻った。
私は本を並べ直したが、危うく落としそうになった。それでもなんとか加速度と位置エネルギーの計算を（ギリギリで）終えた。ルミミナの手を取り、私たちは図書館を出た。
ところが、階段を下りて通りに出ようとしたその時…またあのうるさい女の子がいた。
「まあ、うるさい子ね。今日は見逃してあげるけど、次はそうはいかないわよ。今から警告しておくからね…」
「はいはい、もう、文句ばっかり言うんでしょ？」
ルミミナが口を挟んだ。
「もう、いい加減にしてよ。」
葉月は、あのうるさい女の子の高級車のドアを開けて待っていた。
「ルドヴィカさん、そろそろお時間ですよ。」
「まあ、警告はしたからね。」
不機嫌そうな女の子（葉月のボス）は高級車に乗り込んだが、その前に私を指差した。
夕日が沈む中、ルミミナと並んで家路についた。
「ルミミナ、発明した手袋の名前を考えていたんだけど、『上昇する電撃ボルト』っていいと思うんだ。どう思う？」
「うん！すごくいい名前！気に入ったわ。オーランド、本当にいいアイデアね！」
「そういえば、葉月の目が赤かったからコンタクトレンズをつけてると思ったんじゃない？そんなことありえないでしょ？」
「あぁ、オーランド、考えてみたけど、そうかもね、ははは…」

「着いた！」
ドアを開けると、偶然にも（というか幸運にも）、ルミミナが私が入ろうとした瞬間に転んだ。彼女の後ろにいた私は、つまずいて彼女の上に倒れ込んだ。
彼女は真っ赤になったが、私は数秒間そのままの状態で立ち上がった。ルミミナは恥ずかしそうに目をそらし、そして……私の頬も赤くなった。
「ごめん、ルミミナ。でも、9.81m/sの衝撃が効いたみたいだね。」
「大丈夫、わざとじゃないって分かってる。」
私たちは夕食を済ませ、眠りについた。
部屋に戻って、私は（怒っていた女の子）について調べてみた。すると、彼女はとても豪華な屋敷に住んでいることが分かった。
（うわあ、二度と会いたくない。本当にうざかったけど、彼女のことを考えるのはもうやめて、上昇電撃の準備をしよう。）

The brown-haired girl stood in front of our table with a look that was, how should I put it, a little strange, and her blank expression was frightening.
"Do you have any candy?"
"Excuse me, you said a sweet?"
(I didn't understand why she was asking me for a sweet. Did she need more sugar?)
"Excuse me for interrupting. My name is Hazuki Awa, and I'm the maid for the young lady at the table in front."
(Just what I needed, now a maid asking for sweets. I've never had anything like this happen before.)
I didn't know what to say at that moment, but just as I was about to tell her we didn't have any, Rumimina, kindly and sweetly as always, handed her one of the sweets we had bought earlier.
"Rumimina, you didn't have to..."
Rumimina looked at me.
"If someone is in trouble, you have to help them."
"Well, fine."
Hazuki bowed.
"Thank you very much. The young lady will be very grateful."
And with the same blank expression, she returned to her table with her boss.
(I don't understand why her boss doesn't know...) I got up and she came to ask for the candy herself, but oh well, what does it matter as long as I don't treat her badly?
"Well, Rumimina, let's keep looking. I'm sure we're getting closer to finding a book that can guide us."
"Great."
But just as I was about to continue, I saw Hazuki being mistreated by her boss. She was yelling at her and had very blatantly refused her the candy, in my opinion.
"HAZUKI, I TOLD YOU A QUALITY SWEET, AND THIS LOOKS LIKE NOTHING I'VE EVER EATEN."
"But Miss Ludovica..."
"NOT 'MISS,' YOU USELESS MAID!"
I had to intervene because the situation was getting really bad, especially since they were making so much noise (it's so distracting).
"Hey, Miss whatever, stop treating your classmate Hazuki badly. She worked hard to get that sweet, you know..."
"And who do you think you are to talk to me like that?"
"I think I'm the person who shouldn't allow anyone to mistreat others. Nobody deserves to be looked down on, especially not for what they did and their effort. Besides, you're making a lot of noise, like a broken buzzer, and this is a library!"
"Buzzer what?" "I don't care about your nonsense. Please leave before I have to call my escorts."
I looked at her defiantly, and before I could answer, Rumimina stood up and came to my side.
"Please stop. It's not right to fight over just a piece of candy, okay? Please, Miss, I ask that you don't mistreat your companion, if you can. Orlando, let's go back and keep searching."
"Okay, right?"
"Yes, fine. You were lucky, or my guards would have already taken you away."
(How annoying.)
I went back, a little annoyed with Rumimina, but seeing her made me feel like nothing had happened, and I continued searching.
"Let's look at mechanics, physics and its relationship to mathematics, vector physics, physics and limits. Nothing about how a dimension or a wormhole works."
(But also, to open a portal like that, we would need to have and use the energy of about 100...) Black holes or 300-500 suns, which would be
10^49 joules. Where am I going to get so much energy from? Besides, it's dangerous.
"Rumimina, have you found anything?"
"No, but I think we'll manage. Cheer up!"
"By the way, Rumimina, could you do the spell that brought you to this world? It's just an idea; it might work."
"Yes, but we need some special magical objects, and I don't think we'll find them here."
I stayed a while longer, pretending to look for a book. The truth was, I had suggested going to the library so Rumimina wouldn't be so worried about her situation. If I were in her place, I'd probably be wondering too, and besides... so she'd stay with me (mwah, haha).
"Orlando, do royalty, nobility, or magic heirs exist here too?"
"No, Rumimina, why do you ask?"
"Because the head maid said earlier that she was going to call her..." "Escorts"
"Meh, don't think about those kinds of people. Rumimina is just as annoying and bossy. She's probably a spoiled brat, and besides, her escorts were probably just a couple of brooms, haha."
We both laughed until...
(I hope she didn't hear me)
I felt a presence in front of me, and when I turned around, I saw Hazuki's boss with two escorts. I was shocked and made a face.
"What did you say? What nickname should I give you? Oh, I know, 'nuisance'!"
Hazuki had a sheet of paper with the word 'NUISANCE' in big capital letters.
"SHUT UP! I mean, we're leaving. I'm not going to waste any more of my time."
Several people said in unison, "Shhh, silence!"
Hazuki's boss left with an indignant look on her face and went back to her seat.
I rearranged the books, almost dropping some, but I managed to calculate acceleration and potential energy (just barely). I took Rumimina's hand and We left the library.
But just as we were about to go down the stairs to the street... that annoying girl again.
"Well, you nuisance, I'll let it slide today, but next time you won't be so lucky, so I'm warning you now..."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, you don't know anything but whining, do you?"
Rumimina intervened.
"Please, stop it already."
Hazuki was waiting with the open door of this whiny girl's luxury car.
"Miss Ludovica, it's time to go."
"Well, you've been warned."
The grumpy girl (Hazuki's boss) got into her luxury car, but not before pointing at me.
I walked with Rumimina beside me as the sun set, heading back to our home.
"Rumimina, I was thinking of a name for my invention gloves, and I came up with 'ascending electric bolts.' What do you think?"
"YES! What a great name! I like it. You have such good ideas, Orlando!"
"And didn't you think Hazuki was using contact lenses because her eyes were red, and there's almost no chance of that happening?"
"Oh, Orlando, thinking about it, but I think so, hahaha..."

"WE'RE HERE!"
I opened the door, and by pure chance (and good luck), Rumimina tripped as I entered. Since I was behind her, I tripped too, but I fell on top of her.
She turned bright red, but I stayed like that for a few seconds until I got up. Rumimina looked away, embarrassed, and... My cheeks turned red.
"Sorry, Rumimina, but it seems the 9.81 m/s had an effect."
"It's okay, I know it wasn't intentional."
We both had dinner and went to sleep.
In my room, I looked up information about the (angry girl) and discovered she lived in a very luxurious mansion.
(Wow, I hope I never run into her again. She was really annoying, but I'd better stop wasting my time thinking about her and get my ascending electric bolts ready.)
