第15章：やや騒々しく分析的な旅
笛やサイレンの音が響き渡る前に、僕たちはそこを立ち去った。リンネは先頭を歩きながらポーズを決めていたが、あまりにも煩わしいので僕はもう気に留めないようにしていた……だが、彼女の仕草を注意深く観察してみると、ルミミナと同じように少し不安そうで、恐怖と緊張を隠せないようだった。おそらく先ほどの危険が原因だろう。
「ッーカッコいい去り際だったでしょ、オルランド？ ふん、なんで君に聞いてるんだか」
「……」
（なんて愚かな少女だ。僕たちが逃げ出していなければ、逮捕されるというのがどういう感覚か思い知ることになっていたのに……これ以上トラブルはごめんだ）
「ねえ、一体どこに向かってるのよ？」
「ああ、そうだった。あのレストランに行くには電車に乗る必要があるんだ」
（電車？ 発明品のジャンクパーツを買う予算すらギリギリなのに、どうやって払えばいいんだ？）
僕はルミミナの隣で立ち止まった。彼女が振り返る。
「どうしたの、オルランド？ 体調でも悪いの？」
「リンネ、申し訳ないが僕は一緒に行けない。予算的に無理なんだ。本当にごめん」
リンネが振り向いた。
「あっそ、そんな顔しないでよ。私が全部払うから……変な勘違いしないでよね、オルランド？」
「本当に？ でも僕にはそんな資格はないよ……さっきは僕のエゴのせいで君を危険に晒してしまったんだから」
「来ないなら……大惨事が起きて君の家に行くからね……そう、絶対にそうするんだから！ それで君は最低のモブだって言ってやるんだから、フンッ」
リンネは口を尖らせた。
「だから行くわよ、オルランド。何も起きないと思うし、減るもんじゃないでしょ、私を信じなさいって。そうすればもっと色んな話ができるんだから。……来てほしいの、いい？」
（リンネが急に態度を変えた……）
「分かったよ、リンネ。行くけれど、後でちゃんとお金は返すからね……いいかい？」
「好きにしなさい……後で後悔しても知らないんだから」
ルミミナが僕の腕を掴み、微笑みかけてきた。
「オルランド……ふふ、あなたへの借金がまたひとつ増えちゃったみたいね」
「いいんだルミミナ、僕が君を助けると決めたんだから。君の費用を払うのは僕の義務だ。返さなくていいんだよ、僕がそうしたかったのは……」
リンネが振り返った。
「ちょっと、来るの来ないの！？」
ルミミナは僕の隣を歩き出した。
「さてとオルランド、『電車』って呼ばれているものがどんなものなのか、楽しみだわ」

ルミミナが見るもの全てに歓声をあげ、僕がいつものように説明して彼女が笑い、その横でリンネがポーズを決めながらクライマックスについて語ったりポケット日記に何かを書き込んだりする道を歩いた後、僕たちは駅に到着した。とても穏やかな雰囲気で、日の光が爽やかな印象を与えていた。
（よし、乗車する時間だ……移動中に少し勉強したり、理論や計算を組み立てたりできるかもしれない。いや、残りのわずかなお金で他にどんな発明ができるか考える方が有意義か）
リンネがホームに入ってきた電車を指差した。
「よし、乗り込むわよ。支払いはもう済ませてあるから」
ルミミナはぴょんぴょん跳ねながら、リンネに笑顔を向けた。
「ありがとうリンネ！ ついにこの動く金属の箱が何なのか分かるのね、ふふ。行きましょうオルランド、乗り込みましょう！」
「あ、ああ、今行くよルミミナ」
僕たちは車両に乗り込んだ。リンネがルミミナを案内し、僕たちはリュックを目の届く safe zone（安全な場所）に置いた。またしてもCHONPSの廃棄物どもに計画を台無しにされたり、あの魔法のガラクタを持ち去られたりするリスクは冒したくなかった。
リンネは僕の隣に座り、ルミミナは僕の向かいに座った。
「あーあ、ようやく主人公にふさわしい休息ね……というか電車編って感じ、ふふん」
（またそれか……この me:変数を制御する最も論理的な選択肢は、無視することだ……しまっ た、本を忘れてきた。あの発明品を持ってきていればいいが）
僕はポケットを探り、読書用に自作・設計したタブレット端末——オイラーホロブック を取り出した。廃材やリサイクル部品で作ったもので、あらゆるデジタルデータを読み込み、ホログラムとして投影できる。もちろん僕の携帯電話は自力で修理した折りたたみ式のガラケーで、通話機能しかないからだ。
「何探してるのよ、オタク？ カンニングペーパーでも失くした？」
リンネが僕を睨みつけ、僕も見つめ返した。
「違うよ、僕のオイラーホロブックを探しているんだ」
「オイ……何だって？」
「いいかいリンネ、これは読み書きをするためのデバイスだ。怪しいものじゃない」
幸いにも見つけることができ、僕はそれを展開した。
「ふう、やっとだ。さて、勉強と数式組み立ての時間だ」
リンネがそれを奪い取ろうとしたが、僕は身をかわした。
「ちょっと貸しなさいよ！ 見てみたいの、ライトノベルが読めるかもしれないし！」
「勉強した方がいいんじゃないかい？ 分からないところや物理なら教えてあげるよ」
ルミミナが僕たちを見ていた。
「わあ、オルランド、それなぁに？ 至る所にある画面みたいね、ふふ。あなたって本当に頭がいいのね、うっかり屋で抜け作な私とは大違いだわ、ふふっ」
「そんなこと言わないでルミミナ、君だって僕のようになれるさ」
リンネが立ち上がった。
「ビジュアルノベルを読むことを要求するわ！」
「ダメだって言っただろう……それよりこの論文や記事を読むべきだ」
「うぐっ……やっぱりやめる、ふん。主人公日誌に何を書くか考えるわ」
リンネは座り直し、僕に背を向けて落書きのようなものを描き始めた。
（ようやく静かになった。このまま移動中ずっとおとなしくしていてくれるといいが。ルミミナも外の景色を楽しんでいるようだし、読書の時間だ）
「オルランド、この茶色い 斑点 がついた丸いものはなぁに？」
ルミミナがクッキーを見つけていた。
「それはクッキーだよルミミナ。簡単に言えば小麦粉と チョコレート でできていて、食べるものさ」
「私の世界にも似たようなものがあったけれど、チョコレート の代わりにレーズンが入っていたわ」
ルミミナは一口かじった。僕にはそれが少し愛らしく思えた。
「んー！ これすごく美味しい！ もっと食べたいわ……」
そしてあっという間に、彼女は拍手と笑い声をあげながらクッキーを全て平らげてしまった。
「ふっ、気に入ってくれてよかったよ」

We headed out before any whistles or sirens could be heard. Rinne walked ahead, striking poses I didn't even notice anymore because of how annoying they were... but if I analyzed her body language closely, she seemed a bit anxious, fearful, and nervous, just like Rumimina—probably because of the danger earlier.
“T-That was an epic exit, don't you think, Orlando? Hmm, why do I even ask you...”
“...”
(What a foolish girl. If we hadn't left, she would've learned what it feels like to get arrested... I don't want any more trouble.)
“Hey, where are we supposed to be going?”
“Oh right, I forgot. To get to that restaurant, we need to take a train.”
(A train? How am I going to pay for that when I barely have any budget left to buy scrap metal for my inventions?)
I stopped next to Rumimina. She turned around.
“What's wrong, Orlando? Are you feeling okay?”
“Rinne, I'm sorry, but I won't be able to go with you. My budget won't allow it. I'm truly sorry.”
Rinne turned around.
“Ugh, don't make that face, I'll pay for everything... don't go getting any weird ideas, okay, Orlando?”
“Really? But I don't think I deserve it... I put you in danger earlier because of my selfishness.”
“If you don't come... a cataclysm will happen and I'll go to your house... yes, yes, that will happen, and then I'll say you're a bad extra, hmm.”
Rinne pouted.
“So come on, Orlando. I don't think anything will happen, it won't hurt you, trust me. That way we can talk about more things. I want you to... come, okay?”
(Rinne changed her attitude out of nowhere...)
“Okay, Rinne, I'll go, but I'll pay you back later... got it?”
“Whatever you say... but don't regret it later, huh?”
Rumimina grabbed my arm and smiled at me.
“Orlando... hehe, I think something else just got added to my debt with you.”
“No, Rumimina. I agreed to help you, so it's my duty to cover your expenses. You don't have to pay me back. I did it because...”
Rinne turned around.
“Are you two coming or what?”
Rumimina walked by my side.
“Well, Orlando, I guess I'm about to find out what this 'train' thing is.”
After a walk where Rumimina kept marveling at everything she saw—with me having to explain things as usual while she laughed—and Rinne striking poses along the way, talking about the "climax," and writing in a pocket notebook, we arrived at the station. It looked very peaceful, bathed in a fresh glow from the sunlight.
(Well, time to board... maybe during the ride I can study a bit, formulate theories or calculations, or even better, think about what else I can invent with the little money I have left.)
Rinne pointed to the train as it approached the boarding area.
“Well, time to get on. I already paid for everything.”
Rumimina hopped excitedly and smiled at Rinne.
“Thank you, Rinne! I'm finally going to see what this walking metal cube is, hehe. Come on, Orlando, let's get on!”
“Uh, yeah, yeah, I'm coming, Rumimina.”
We boarded the carriage. Rinne guided Rumimina, and we stored our backpacks in a secure spot within sight. I wasn't going to risk any CHONPS waste ruining my plans again or running off with those magical trinkets.
Rinne sat next to me, and Rumimina sat across from me.
“Agh, finally the rest that protagonists deserve... I mean, the train arc, hmm.”
(There she goes again... I think the most logical option to manage this variable is to ignore her... Oh, damn it, I forgot my books. I hope I brought that invention.)
I searched my pockets for the tablet I had created and designed for reading—I called it the eulerholobook. I had built it out of recycled materials and components, allowing me to read any digital file and project it as a hologram. Naturally, since my phone was a basic keypad phone I had salvaged myself, it was only good for calls.
“What are you looking for, nerd? Did you lose your cheat sheets?”
Rinne glared at me, and I returned the look.
“No, I'm looking for my eulerholobook.”
“Eule... what?”
“You see, Rinne, it's a device for reading and writing. Nothing weird.”
Luckily, I found it and unfolded it.
“Phew, finally. Now it's time to study and formulate.”
Rinne tried to snatch it from me, but I dodged her.
“Let me borrow it! I want to see it, I can read my light novels!”
“You shouldn't be studying? If you want, I can teach you physics or whatever you don't understand.”
Rumimina watched us.
“Wow, Orlando, what is that? It's like the screens that are everywhere, hehe. You really are super smart, not like me—I'm so spacey and clueless, hehe.”
“Don't say that, Rumimina. I'm sure you could be like me.”
Rinne stood up.
“I demand that we read visual novels!”
“I already told you no... we're better off reading these articles and theses.”
“Uh, um... maybe not, hmm. I'll just see what to do in my protagonist logbook.”
Rinne sat down, turned her back to me, and started making what looked like scribbles.
(Finally, she calmed down. I hope she stays like that for the whole ride. As for Rumimina, she seems entertained watching the view. Time to read.)
“Orlando, what is this circle with brown spots?”
Rumimina had found cookies.
“It's called a cookie, Rumimina. Simply put, it's flour with chocolate, and you eat it.”
“In my world, there were similar things, but they had raisins instead of chocolate.”
Rumimina took a bite, which I found cute.
“Mmm, these are delicious! I want more...”
And in no time at all, she devoured all the cookies with applause and giggles.
“Heh, I'm glad you liked them.”
