第12章：簡単なコツと科学的手法でビデオゲームに勝つ方法
リンネの家を出た。幸いなことにゲームセンターはそれほど遠くなかったため、到着まであまり時間はかからなそうだった。それに、リンネが道案内をしてくれていた。
リンネは突然こちらを振り返った。
「ねえ、青いパーカーのバカと金髪の子。ちょっと気になっただけなんだけど、確認しておくわ。あなたたちの名前って、ルミミナとオルランドで合ってるんでしょ？」
ルミミナは笑顔でリンネを見る。
「うん、私はルミミナだよ。ちゃんと気にかけてくれるなんて、リンネは優しいね」
俺は面倒そうにリンネを見る。
「見てみろ、叫び声の大きい少女が俺の名前を確認したがっている。質問の効率はかなり低い。それに、なぜ俺がわざわざ答える必要がある？」
「誰が叫び声の大きい少女よ、このバカ！！」
ルミミナが俺を見る。
「もう、オルランドで合ってるよ。これで満足？ 叫び声の大きい少女さん？」
リンネは眉をひそめ、そっぽを向いた。
俺たちはいくつもの通りを歩いた。その間、俺はいつものようにリンネが話す幻想的な話を科学的な証拠を使って否定していた。何度かルミミナが間に入り、言い争いが大きくならないようにしてくれた。
するとリンネが少し変な笑顔を浮かべて俺を見る。
「さて、オルランド、ルミミナ。もうすぐ着くわよ。覚悟しなさい。ゲームでは私があなたたちを完膚なきまでに叩き潰してあげる！」
「はいはい、もう黙ってくれ」
ルミミナは小さく跳ねた。
「やったー！ ついにそのゲームっていうものや、あの機械が何なのか分かるんだね！」
（ふふ、どんなゲームでも俺には勝てないだろう。こんな時のために発明品を持ってきたんだ。まさか俺が信号を傍受してどう作ったのかまで理解しているなんて、誰も思わないだろうな）
目的地に到着すると、そこは予想通りの場所だった。リンネは両手を広げる。
「さあ、オルランド、ルミミナ。これがゲームセンターよ！」
「さっさと終わらせよう」
俺はどんなゲームがあるのか確認しながら、ルミミナの疑問に一つずつ答えていた。
「それじゃあ、オルランドとルミミナ。このゲームで私に勝負を挑みなさい！」
リンネが選んだのは格闘ゲームのアーケード筐体だった。そして最初の相手は俺になった。
対戦中、リンネはかなり優勢だった。
しかしその瞬間、俺は密かに自分の発明品を使い、開発者用の設定を起動した。そして相手の体力が通常の二倍減るように調整した。
ルミミナはぴょんぴょん跳ねながら応援する。
「頑張ってオルランド！ できるよー！ それにリンネも上手だよ！」
リンネは必死に操作を続けていた。どうやらかなり遊び慣れているらしい。
しかし、彼女もルミミナも知らない。
俺が秘密の変数を利用しようとしていることを。
（ふむ……リンネはここにかなり通っているようだな。さて、この機械の信号に干渉してメモリを書き換えるか。ずいぶんとセキュリティが甘いな）
「見たかオルランドのバカ！ もうすぐ私が勝――え？」
「この軸を一つ変更して、ここを調整……」

リンネのキャラクターの体力ゲージは急速に減少し、ついにはゼロになった。
画面には「KO」の文字が表示される。
「あー……やっぱり俺は優秀だと思わないか？」
リンネは俺を指差す。
「今の絶対ズルしたでしょ、このバカ！」
「違う。ズルではない。システムに脆弱性があるなら利用する。それが限界を調べるということだ」
「……」
リンネは腕を組む。
「英雄は絶対に負けないのよ！ 今のはあなたの能力を測っていただけ。それに、この機械は調子が悪いみたいね。次はあのレースゲームで勝負よ！」
（簡単だな。また開発者モードを起動すればいいだけだ。早く終わらせて研究に戻りたい）
「……いや、考えてみれば次はルミミナが俺と対戦した方がいいな」
俺は少し驚いた。
ルミミナはトースターの電源すら入れ方を知らなかったはずだ。それでも、すでにリンネは必要な物を渡してくれた。だから負けることについては気にしていなかった。
契約はあくまで彼女に付き合うことだったからだ。
「……」
ルミミナはゲーム機の前に立ち、適当にボタンを押し始めた。
俺は仕方なく手伝う。
「オルランド、このボタン？」
「違う。それじゃない」
「じゃあ、これ？」
「それも違う……こっちだ」
リンネが割り込む。
「それで本当にルミミナは遊ぶつもりなの？ それとオルランド、彼女を手伝ったら渡した物を返してもらうわよ」
ルミミナはようやく正しいボタンを押した。
「やったー！ やっとできた！」
画面を見る。
「よし、リンネ。もちろん遊ぶよ。ただ、少しだけ問題を解決させてね」
ルミミナは何個かボタンを押した。
そして不思議なことに、彼女はどんどん順位を上げていった。
リンネはコントローラーを強く握る。
「嘘……そんな……私が負けるわけない！」
ルミミナは笑顔で言った。
「頑張ってリンネ。追いつけるよ、きっと」
（……どうやらルミミナは俺の助けを必要としていないようだな）
そして、全員が予想していなかったことに――
ルミミナは勝利した。
「やったー！ 勝った！」
ルミミナは嬉しそうに跳ねる。
リンネは驚いた表情で彼女を見る。
「……」
「まあリンネ。どうやらあなたのゲームの効率はかなり低いみたいだな」
その瞬間。
二人の男がこちらへ近づいてきた。
どう見ても友好的な雰囲気ではなかった。
....ルミミナは跳ねるのをやめ、俺たちの近くへ寄る。
そしてリンネは、彼らをじっと見つめた。

We arrived at the place. It was as expected. Rinne held out his hands.
"Well, Orlando and Rumimina, take a look at the arcade."
"Let's finish this as quickly as possible."
I started looking at the different games and explaining them to her. Rumina, all her doubts.
"Well, Orlando and Rumimina, I challenge you to beat me at this game."
The game Rinne had challenged us to was an arcade fighting machine. Rinne challenged me first.
In the game, Rinne was way ahead until I discreetly used one of my inventions and turned on developer controls, activating the "double health" feature.
Rumimina was jumping up and down.
"Come on, Orlando, you can do it! Yes! And Rinne, you're doing great!"
Rinne kept playing frantically; it seemed like she knew all the tricks, but neither she nor Rumimina knew I was going to use my secret variable.
(Hmm, I suspect Rinne comes here a lot... well, it's time to jam this machine's signal and edit its memory. They have such poor security.)
"Look, Orlando, you idiot, I'm going to beat you... what?"
“And one move on this axis and another over here.”
