A Modest Room Overlooking Dystopian Liminal Concept | JP & EN the Skyscrapers
Every so often, I come across AI-generated images of vast, high-ceilinged rooms overlooking a forest of skyscrapers. They look strangely comfortable, yet the walls seem almost derelict, and the furniture is far too modest for such a spectacular view. Those peculiar, liminal images. This is simply a little daydream inspired by them.
A room high above a vast city. Yet perhaps this is no ordinary high-rise residence, but part of an enormous mansion belonging to some dystopian ruler — a room prepared for the purpose of keeping one particular person there.
The space itself is impossibly vast and stark, and yet at its centre is a strangely small and rather charming little living area: a single bed, bookshelves, a desk, and warm lighting. Rather than the ruler's own quarters, it looks almost like a ‘nest’ made to keep someone else comfortable.
The great open space looks as though several floors have been removed to create it, with wiring and fragments of whatever structures once occupied the space still left behind. It has clearly been arranged to make its occupant comfortable, and yet it seems strangely crude for a room provided by someone powerful enough to command a view like this.
— Perhaps civilisation itself has already fallen into decline. Perhaps there are scarcely any resources or technology left, and even the city beyond the windows is nothing more than a hologram.
And when the occupant falls asleep and wakes the following morning, perhaps the mansion has moved somewhere entirely different once again. Each time they stand at the top of the stairs and look down upon their own room, a different world from yesterday stretches beyond the windows.
