A Peaceful Little World Bittersweet Gothic Romance | JP & EN

A Peaceful Little World
The heroine is employed as a maid, but is told that she will not be working in the main house.
For some reason, she is given a small detached cottage of her own. It stands in a large, sunlit garden. Her duties are simple: a little washing and cleaning, nothing strenuous. She launders the master's linen, cleans his detached residence, does the washing-up, and serves his meals.
For some reason, she is also expected to sit at the table and dine with him.
But this is her first position as a maid, and the master is almost the only person she ever has dealings with. She therefore has no idea that there is anything peculiar about this arrangement.
A small, sunlit cottage.
A large garden.
A manageable routine of cleaning, laundry and serving meals.
Plenty to eat, with all her living needs provided for.
Regular work, every day.
Almost the only person she sees is the master.
And, for some reason, she takes her meals with him.
So this is less a case of ‘employing her as a servant’ than of ‘providing her with a way of life in which she can remain safe, healthy and well.’
Meanwhile, in the main house, the servants apparently refer to her as ‘the mistress of the house’.
The heroine herself knows nothing about this.
