The Supporting Character and the White-Gloved Arm White-Gloved Phantom | JP & EN
The Supporting Character and the White-Gloved Arm
“The supporting character” is, for the most part, an inconspicuous role.
She stands on an axis slightly removed from the principal characters who carry the story forward.
And yet, whenever she makes her way toward the wings,
the audience is treated to a strangely suggestive sight.
Whenever the scene changes from one in which she belongs onstage to another, it happens without fail.
From the darkness of the wings, a gentleman’s arm appears—a dark sleeve, and a white-gloved hand—and beckons to her.
A spotlight catches the white glove.
As though drawn toward it, she walks to the waiting hand and disappears from the stage, every time.
Whether it belongs to a living man or a puppet,
or perhaps to something like a ghost,
no one can tell.
Then, near the end of the performance,
the supporting character is given a scene in which she sings a quiet ballad alone.
The song almost seems, somehow, to hint at the identity of that mysterious arm.
At last, the song comes to an end.
This time, beside the familiar white-gloved arm, the tips of a pair of black shoes can be seen resting on the floor of the wings.
Her song finished, she disappears into the wings, where the owner of the arm and those shoes is waiting.
And after that, she never appears onstage again.
In the end, neither the gentleman in full nor his true identity is ever revealed.
“Who was that?”
With only that lingering question left behind, the curtain falls.
