Toward the Future 〜

Leaving the Pair Burial Mound, we parted ways with Zumii as well.

Walking along the edge of the pond under the golden evening light, I suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to bow my head.

 Thank you. Truly, thank you.

For cherishing and preserving the story of people who lived sixteen hundred years ago, people who exist only in legend. I will repay this kindness for sure.

A small bird flew off toward the pale green mountains.

 “Hey, Miko.”

 “Yeah?”

“I’ve decided. I’m going to become a doctor.”

 “A doctor?”

“Yeah. If you’re going to become a doctor, then I’ll become a doctor too and support you.”

“I see. Alright. I’ll become a doctor and give back to the people of Iyo. That’s what I’ll live for.”

“Then I’ll spend my life taking care of the people of Iyo.”

 I stopped walking.

 “Hey, Miko.”

 “Yeah?”

“There’s something I feel like I need to say.”

 “What is it?”

 “I’m sorry.”

 “…Why are you apologizing?”

“Not me exactly… it’s the me from my past life.”

I’ve been thinking about it. Why was I born carrying feelings from a past life like this? Of course, it must be because we both had feelings for each other—but if I really think about it, it was probably me who was more bound by them. I dragged you into the next life too. That’s why. Thank you. And I'm sorry... for carrying you with me into another life.

“You’re not Karu no Ōiratsume. You’re Sotoko.”

 You said it firmly.

Today, coming here made me realize something. What matters is living in the present. We were reborn together in this life. The past life is over now. We’ve been freed from it. From now on, we should only think about what comes next. Let’s work together and do what we can.

I looked at you in the evening light.

Yes… what matters is simply living this life to the fullest. That’s all we need to do. That’s right. We were given this chance to live together.

A scene drifted into my mind.

A future home with you as my husband, surrounded by children. A lively household where father, mother, and children all laugh together. Yes—that was the life I had always dreamed of. Since losing my mother in elementary school… and perhaps even since my ancient past life.

And in that future… you would no longer be my brother, but my husband. I would no longer be your sister, but your wife.

“Hey, how many kids do you want?”

You looked taken aback by the sudden question.

“Sotoko, you really ask some bold things.”

 “Really? Do I?”

“Well… I’ve never really thought about it, but maybe… three or four? A big family sounds nice and lively.”

“Then we'll have a big family.”

 “But before that,” you said.

“We need to become doctors first.”

That’s exactly the kind of grounded thing you’d say. Reliable. Reassuring.

Yes—we can’t even begin unless we become people who can help others. We have to build a self-reliant life. That’s the foundation. We doctors working side by side, treating patients… I could see it clearly.

 “Yes. I will. I promise!”

 Heh.

It felt like someone laughed softly somewhere. My heart became clear, transparent.

Then my phone chimed with a light melody.

 A message from Takako-chan:

“Hey, it’s happening the day after tomorrow. Soto—please! Teach me how to make egg sandwiches!”

 Oh dear.

Once things start moving, they really move fast, don’t they?

“I should start preparing dinner. Let’s head home. Tonight it’s takikomi gohan.”

A road stretching toward the future appeared before us.

All we have to do is walk it.

There may be painful moments. Difficult moments.

 But it’s okay.

We crossed sixteen hundred years of time and space to be here.

Even if things don’t go well, we can start over.

 We will always be together.

 So it’s okay.

 The sky opened wide.

In the pale, languid evening sky, the sun shone brilliantly.

We descended the stone steps from the pond.

 I took your hand.

 “Let’s run!”

Hand in hand, the two of us ran.

 From now on, and always.

 “Sotoko.”

 “Yes?”

 “…Isn’t this a bit… fast?”

 “Is it?”
