愚劣、過ち、罪、浪費

我等が心を占め、体を動かし、

我等育(はぐく)めるは優しい後悔、

さながら害虫に餌やる乞食。

La sottise, l’erreur, le péché, la lésine

Occupent nos esprits et travaillent nos corps,

Et nous alimentons nos aimables remords,

Comme les mendiants nourrissent leur vermine.

犯せる罪の頑(かたく)ななこと、悔い改めの軽いこと。

我等懺悔(ざんげ)に大金を積み

我等喜び戻るは泥濘（ぬかるみ）

卑劣な涙に穢(けが)れなど、すべて洗い流せようと。

Nos péchés sont têtus, nos repentirs sont lâches ;

Nous nous faisons payer grassement nos aveux,

Et nous rentrons gaîment dans le chemin bourbeux,

Croyant par de vils pleurs laver toutes nos taches.

あくまでも安らかに揺するは魅入られし魂の揺り籠を、

意志という名の我等が計(はか)り知れぬ鋼（はがね）のあの器(うつわ)ですらも

この有識な化学者の手ですべて蒸発。

Et le riche métal de notre volonté

Est tout vaporisé par ce savant chimiste.

我等を動かす糸を手繰(たぐ)るは「悪魔(ディアブロ)」！

我等魅(ひ)かれる、反発するものにこそ

「地獄」に向かう、日々新たなる一歩を

悪臭こもる闇の中、恐れもないまま。

Aux objets répugnants nous trouvons des appas ;

Chaque jour vers l’Enfer nous descendons d’un pas,

Sans horreur, à travers des ténèbres qui puent.

貧しく淫らな女たちが、男とヤッてやっと食うように

して、古の大淫婦に捧げられた殉教の乳房からして、

通りすがる我等は、密かな快楽をただ盗もうとして

かたく搾り取る、涸れたオレンジのように。

Ainsi qu’un débauché pauvre qui baise et mange

Le sein martyrisé d’une antique catin,

Nous volons au passage un plaisir clandestin

Que nous pressons bien fort comme une vieille orange.

我等が不健康な脳内には、百万匹の蠕虫のように

「悪魔(デーモン)」の民が這い回り、歌い、打ち上げる

息をすれば乃ち肺に「死」を吹き込んでくる

声なき慟哭が押し寄せてくる、濁流のように。

Dans nos cerveaux malsains, comme un million d’helminthes,

Grouille, chante et ripaille un peuple de Démons,

Et, quand nous respirons, la Mort dans nos poumons

S’engouffre, comme un fleuve, avec de sourdes plaintes.

もしも強姦、汚毒、刺刀（さすが）、火事

愉快な意匠の刺繍がまだ施されていないなら、

我等が哀れな運命の月並みな画布には、

それは哀しいかな我等が魂、大胆を欠き。

Si le viol, le poison, le poignard, l’incendie

N’ont pas encor brodé de leurs plaisants dessins

Le canevas banal de nos piteux destins,

C’est que notre âme, hélas ! n’est pas assez hardie.

しかしジャッカルやヒョウ、山犬、他にも

サル、サソリ、ハゲワシ、大蛇が、

叫び、吠え、唸り、這う怪物が、

悪徳の栄えと名高い檻の中にも

Les singes, les scorpions, les vautours, les serpents,

Les monstres glapissants, hurlants, grognants, rampants,

Dans la ménagerie infâme de nos vices

身振り手振りも叫びもないのに、

喜んで地球をそっくり瓦礫と化し

あくび一つで、この世界を飲み込んでしまう事だろう。

水煙草を燻らしつつ、断頭台の夢を見る。

読者諸君、この繊細なる怪物をご存知の筈、

…偽善の読者よ、…我が同胞よ、…我が兄弟よ！

C’est l’Ennui ! — l’œil chargé d’un pleur involontaire,

Il rêve d’échafauds en fumant son houka.

Tu le connais, lecteur, ce monstre délicat,

— Hypocrite lecteur, — mon semblable, — mon frère !

Satan Trismégiste: 錬金術の神人ヘルメス・トリスメギストスを反転したボードレール独自の魔人。satan は「悪魔」一般を指すが、此処では Satan としていることもあり、個体名と見るべきであろう。おそらくダンテ『神曲』地獄篇の堕天使を意識している。因みに、ジェームズ王欽定訳で Satan を検索した結果

初出は「歴代誌上」、典型は「ヨブ記」となる。

Satan は同時に、ルシファー（Lucifer）でもある。「ルシファー」は英語読みで、ラテン語ではLucifero「ルチーフェロ」といい、『神曲』地獄篇では此の名を以て呼ばれている。なお、詩人は本作中で「悪魔」と訳される存在を複数書き分けており、何らかの意図が窺える。

le riche métal: 「豊かな金属」というのは具体的に何の事なのか、ここで語られてはいない。今のところ不明

Diable: 上に同じく「悪魔」であり、le Diable はサタンを指す。但し Diable には「厄介者」「野郎」「悪戯っ子」の響きがあり、ティル・オイレンシュピーゲルやメフィストーフェレの雰囲気に近い

helminthes: 寄生虫一般をいう。寄生虫とは動物の寄生生物をいうので、種類が非常に多いのだが、特にどれとも意識してはいないようだ。しかし所詮は想像の世界、と笑っても居れないのは最近の発見で、健常者でも体内に常駐するウイルス叢がある。人体の至る所、脳内も例外ではない。自分の中に、自分でないものが住み着き食い荒らす、そんな想像を巡らした詩人の直感の方が正しかった、という事になろうか。

Démons: これも「悪魔」と訳すが、「悪霊」に近いらしい。ドフトエフスキー『悪霊』も仏語訳では Les Démons という。但し、ボードレールの散文詩「貧乏人を撲殺しよう」では、自分の「デーモン」を「ソクラテスのデーモン」と比較して、制止だけではない行動のデーモンだと吹聴しているから、詩人にとっては「霊」「魂」であって「悪霊」ではなかったかもしれない。
