It’s been two years since Grandpa passed away.

Starting in April, I’ll be a high schooler, and my sister’s starting university.

To celebrate both of us getting in, we’re off on a three-day family trip to Europe!

You know, one of the best parts of traveling is getting on the plane. This time, it was a Boeing 797—pure white with two blue stripes and those sleek winglets. Just like they said on the news, the seats had more legroom, and the screens were bigger than before. The seats themselves were way more comfortable too. I sank into mine, let out a blissful sigh, and then—oh! Even the windows were a little larger.

The sky outside was crystal clear, and the view was breathtaking. I pressed my forehead against the window, soaking it all in. The flight was supposed to be about 11 hours, but honestly? It felt more like three. Time really flies when you’re having fun.

Airports are fascinating. Did you know Japan has around 110 airports? But the U.S. has nearly 14,000! Each one has its own unique design, reflecting the culture of its region. Just wandering through different airports is an adventure in itself. Someday, I’d love to visit the world’s biggest airport—it’s even larger than all 23 wards of Tokyo combined!

Airports are also places where people meet. In fact, my grandparents met at an airport! Our family loves to travel, so whenever I see other families at the airport, I feel this weird sense of kinship. It’s kind of nice.

Europe is packed with incredible sights—churches, temples, castles, cathedrals… Walking through these historic places, you can almost feel the weight of the past.

And the literature! Shakespeare, Proust, and so many more. Dad’s still as obsessed as ever with European literature. Italian, French, German… Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many languages he can speak. As for me? Still just Japanese and English. But hey, being bilingual isn’t too bad, right?

Today, we’re in Italy. This country is like a treasure chest of culture—food, literature, music, art, film. It’s got the most UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world! They say “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and being here, I really get it.

Right now, we’re at the Spanish Steps, famous from Roman Holiday.

A princess tired of her overwhelming royal duties sneaks out of her palace and wanders the streets of Rome with a newspaper reporter. As they explore the city, their romance blossoms…

And before I knew it, I was running up the steps, gelato in hand, just like Princess Ann. The weather’s perfect, and the lively buzz of the plaza is just right.

Only… our whole family decided to reenact the scene together. A bunch of us running up the stairs with gelato? Yeah, we definitely got some strange looks. But here’s the real kicker—we actually got scolded by a local! Apparently, even though the "no eating while walking" signs were removed about ten years ago, there are still people like us who try to recreate the movie scene every now and then. Oops. Lesson learned!

The three-day trip was amazing. Once we arrived, time flew by in the blink of an eye. Looking back, I think the most exciting part was actually planning it. Package tours are fine, but honestly? Nothing beats planning a trip yourself.

On the flight home, I barely lasted a minute before falling asleep. Guess all that excitement finally caught up with me.

April marks a new beginning. My next goal? Teito University. If I want to follow in my sister’s footsteps, I need to step up my game. No time to relax just yet.

My middle school friends and I are all going to different schools, so I’ll have to start fresh and make new friends. I wonder what kind of people I’ll meet. Will I get along with everyone?

I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

High school… what will it be like? I can’t wait to find out.
