 ――「NARUSE」

"Primrose"

#1 Alumni Reunion

It was the end of August, and Tokyo was still in the height of summer. A woman walked through the concrete jungle.

In the hotel banquet hall, a signboard read "Shichiura Middle School, 52nd Alumni Reunion." Adults who still bore traces of their middle school selves gathered one after another. As they spotted name tags, calls of "Long time no see!" rang out from all directions.

Hasebe Seira received her name tag at the reception desk and let out a small sigh.

She'd had three counseling sessions packed in since that morning. The first session was a ninety-minute intake, followed by regular sessions back-to-back, with chart organization and preparation for the next appointments squeezed in between. She'd taken a proper lunch break, but that only made the afternoon drowsiness harder to fight. Her head was foggy, and for a moment she thought she shouldn't have come to the reunion at all. Five years into running her own counseling practice, her appointments never stopped coming. She was grateful for that, but about to turn thirty, her stamina wasn't what it used to be in her twenties.

She glanced at her phone's schedule. Tomorrow morning, she had to take her grandmother to the hospital. Her grandmother's forgetfulness had been getting worse lately, and she was undergoing tests for dementia. Friends around her said, "Maybe it's time to consider a facility," but there were still things she could do on her own. So she continued living with her. For Seira, who had lost both parents in middle school, her grandmother was her only blood relative.

It had been two weeks since she'd last seen her boyfriend, Hayashi. With his job at the Metropolitan Police Department requiring night shifts and sudden call-ins, their schedules rarely aligned. When they did meet, they always had dinner at the same Italian restaurant, and she rode home on the back of his SR400. His back was always at the same angle. The sound of the motorcycle engine, the rhythm of their conversations at stoplights—everything had a fixed, predictable pattern. It was comfortable. At least, she'd thought so. That relationship had continued for three years. Not once had they talked about marriage.

Guided by the reception staff, Seira stepped into the venue.

Familiar faces appeared one after another.

She was asked how she was doing, and talked about her work and where she lived. It was fun. Yet there was a strange sense of distance, as if she were watching fish in an aquarium from behind glass.

"Seira-chan?"

She turned around to find a woman from the string orchestra waving at her with a smile. The conversation soon turned to club activities.

"I heard Naruse is coming too."

At that name, Seira's eyes widened.

The scent of rosin suddenly wafted back through her nose.

The empty classroom, dazzling with the setting sun.

By the window.

A full, round profile.

A violin.

Fingertips that skillfully played unfamiliar pieces.

The "Liebesleid" he'd played on her instrument.

—How nostalgic.

She smiled at the thought. And just then—

"Naruse!"

Someone called out from the entrance.

She turned her gaze casually.

A man was chatting with the event organizer, laughing.

A black jacket. A tall, straight back. A profile that was slightly more tanned than in middle school. When he laughed, his eyes crinkled in the same way they had back then.

Seira forgot to breathe.

"...Eh."

A small sound escaped her lips without thinking. The same name. The same way of laughing. And yet, he was like a completely different person.

Someone tapped her shoulder.

"Naruse, I saw you on the MHK Symphony Hour!"

"Come on, it was just a glimpse."

He laughed, a little embarrassed.

He naturally joined the circle of people, chatting and laughing easily.

The chubby, insecure boy from back then, who used to turn bright red just from being spoken to by a girl—he was nowhere to be seen.

And yet, when he laughed—just for a moment. The person with whom she'd shared three years of youth in the same clubroom was there.

Deep in Seira's chest, something small made a quiet sound.

"...Naruse."

Naruse turned around. He looked at Seira with a hint of surprise for a moment, then broke into a smile.

"Hasebe, right? How are you?"

"Doing well, thanks. There's so much to catch up on. Yasuko too..."

"Good to hear you and Kobayashi are still close. You haven't changed, Hasebe."

For some reason, Seira had to fight back tears.

"Welcome home."

"I'm back."

Her grandmother was sitting on the sofa, watching TV. Lately, she repeated the same stories over and over. But that was okay. Because Grandma was there, she had a place to come home to.

Seira sat down beside her and gently took her grandmother's hand. It was warm. She wished this warmth would last forever.

When she checked her phone, there was a message from Hayashi. A short one: "Good work today. Was the reunion fun?"

Seira stared at the screen, unable to type a reply.

That night, even after taking a shower and getting into bed, her mind was full of Naruse's profile.

He used to be so awkward, turning red all the way to his ears just from meeting her eyes.

He was even appearing on TV, apparently. The words "I'm glad you're still close" echoed in her mind. Seira savored the warmth in her chest.

When she was with her boyfriend Hayashi, she felt calm—but the moment she stood in front of Naruse, it was as if she'd been transported back to that clubroom. Her chest tightened, and she couldn't help it.

—I wanted to talk to him more.

From that night on, a small sediment began to gather inside Seira.

Even during counseling sessions, while listening to her clients' words, a corner of her mind was thinking about Naruse. What kind of work did he do? What was his daily life like in Tokyo? She typed "Naruse Shun" into the search bar.

"Wow... incredible."

Naruse had switched from violin to viola and become a member of the MHK Symphony Orchestra. An interview article mentioned that "his turning point toward the viola was the recording of Primrose."

She wanted to know more and more. The urge was so strong it surprised even herself, and Seira felt as if tiny thorns were slowly piercing her heart.

A few days later, she casually opened the group LINE.

The screen had long since fallen silent after the reunion.

She scrolled and tapped the list of participants.

—"NARUSE"

His icon was a photo of a hamster. Did he keep one? His status message was blank.

Her finger hovered over the "Add Contact" button. Seira caught her breath. Her finger stopped dead.

I shouldn't.

She had Hayashi. They'd been together for three years without any complaints. She remembered the warmth of his back. The way her body always leaned at the same angle on the back of his bike. The familiar rhythm of their conversations at stoplights. That warmth was stopping her finger right now.

And yet—why?

She closed the screen. Put her phone face down on the desk and took a deep breath.

Her heart was pounding. Cold sweat beaded on her skin. A mix of guilt and an unbearable longing intertwined, and her hand gripping the phone instinctively tightened.

In the end, she closed the screen that day.

But once ignited, her feelings could no longer be contained.

Around the time the autumn breeze began to blow, a second turning point came.

Through mutual friends, she heard that Naruse would be performing in a small concert at a hall near Tokyo. A chamber music concert.

Before she knew it, Seira had bought two tickets for the weekend.

If I invite Yasuko, it'll be fine.

She told herself that. With Yasuko there, they wouldn't be alone. She was just going to listen to an old classmate's performance.

Yes. Just that. —She wanted to believe it.
