Matchmaker Times Two
They both had a large size of the new drink in front of them. Kiko waited till Kaede was out of earshot.
“Hey, I was thinking about something yesterday.”
Kiko whispered as she talked, giving Yuki an idea what the subject was.
“Do you even know if she’s single?”
Kiko scoffed at Yuki’s assumption, then gave in.
“Yes, I was here when she broke up with her last girlfriend.”
“You really have spent a lot of time here.”
“Yes. Anyway, she’s totally available, and would definitely be great for Mary.”
“I don’t think you’re wrong, but how do we have them meet?”
Kiko smiled, having already planned it all out.
“We throw a mixer.”
“A mixer? How old are we? That’s a kids thing.”
“Not at all!”
“Two thirds of us are already very together.”
“I... didn’t think of that.”
Kiko tapped her chin.
“It doesn’t matter though, we’ll just make it a dinner party then.”
Yuki now tapped her chin thoughtfully.
“That’s a pretty good idea, it sounds fancy also.”
“Exactly.”
“Well, one problem. She may not be single anymore.”
“It’s only been three days.”
“She’s a rock star! She could get a date in like an hour.”
“That’s a total exaggeration. But, there’s a way to find out.”
“How?”
Kiko picked up her smartphone and opened the LINE app.
“I’ll ask her?”
“Ask her!? That’s completely tactless.”
“On the contrary, it’s flattering.”
“Flattering... I guess.”
Kiko tapped the send icon.
“Entirely.”
Almost instantly she got a reply.
“Yes, she is single. And also a blushing sticker.”
Yuki nodded, impressed by Kiko’s proven theory.
“So what about Kaede?”
“Actually.”
To their surprise Kaede was standing next to them. Kiko and Yuki jumped in their chairs.
“I overheard most of what you said, I apologize.”
She spoke in her usual, gentle voice. Bowing in apology to them.
“That’s not necessary. Are you interested?”
Kaede smiled widely.
“I’m looking forward to meeting her.”
Kiko clapped excitedly.
“This is perfect! Did you hear who she is?”
“It’s only a guess, but the singer Mary?”
Kiko smiled.
“Yes, that’s her.”
“Is it okay if I message you the details tonight? I haven’t planned it out too much yet.”
“Yes, that would be fine. Thank you.”
She bowed and walked back to her spot at the counter, greeting new customers.
“She’s so polite.”
“It’s really cute.”
“They don’t really seem similar, do you think they’ll be compatible?”
Kiko sipped her drink and looked at Yuki with curiosity.
“I’m a master of this kind of thing, I know they’ll be.”
She winked.
“That’s very true, this’ll be fun.”
“That’s the other thing, even if they don’t really work out, it’ll be a good time. And...”
She took another sip of her coffee.
“We’ve never seen Kaede outside of work, I’m curious to know what she’s like.”
“I am too actually, I can’t even guess.”
“She is somewhat of an enigma.”
Yuki looked at the clock.
“We should leave soon, I wonder what Rika is going to think about the idea.”
