第8話 空までお散歩！ 張り付きブーツ（A Walk to the Sky! The Sticky Boots）
それは科学も魔法もある、こことは別の世界。
This is a world where both science and magic exist, a world different from ours.
今日の魔法学校の授業は、学校の池で行われる「水の上を移動する魔法」です。
Today's class at the magic school is about "magic to move on water" held at the school pond.
アイビーは大きなアヒルの背に乗って、スイスイと水の上を進んでいます。
Ivy was smoothly moving on the water, riding on the back of a large duck.
ガスは浮き輪ドーナツでプカプカ浮いていますが、その浮き輪ドーナツをモグモグとつまみ食いしていました。
Gus was bobbing around on a donut swim ring, but he was munching on that very donut.
そしてジャックスは、ものすごい水しぶきを上げながら、なんと水面をビューン！と走っています。
And Jax was zooming across the water surface, making a huge splash!
「よーし、私も！ 魔法まぜまぜ、水の上を歩け！ エイッ！」
"Alright, me too! Magic Mix, Walk on Water! Yah!"
ドットもさっそく魔法を唱えて、池に向かって歩いていきます。
Dot also cast her spell right away and walked toward the pond.
しかし、ドットの体は水面を歩くどころか、全く水に浮かびません。
However, far from walking on the surface, Dot's body didn't float at all.
歩いて進むにつれて、どんどん水の中に入っていってしまいました。
As she walked forward, she went deeper and deeper into the water.
とうとう全身が沈んでしまい、ジャンプしても水の底にポスッと着地してしまいます。
Finally, she sank completely, and even when she jumped, she just landed "Plop" on the bottom of the pond.
それを見たジャックスが大笑いしました。
Seeing that, Jax laughed out loud.
「あはは！ それじゃあ『水面を歩く魔法』じゃなくて、『水底を歩く魔法』だよ！」
"Ahaha! Then that's not 'magic to walk on water', but 'magic to walk on the bottom of the water'!"
アイビーは急いでアヒルに指示を出して、水底にいるドットを大きなくちばしでくわえて引き上げました。
Ivy quickly directed her duck, which grabbed Dot at the bottom with its large beak and pulled her up.
「もう、笑ったら可哀想だよ、ジャックス」
"Jeez, it's mean to laugh, Jax."
ずぶ濡れになったドットの横で、ドボーン！
Beside the soaking wet Dot, Splash!
ガスが浮き輪ドーナツを食べ過ぎて、水の中に落ちてしまいました。
Gus had eaten too much of his donut swim ring and fell into the water.
ガスもドットと同じようにアヒルに助けられながら、呑気に言いました。
While being rescued by the duck just like Dot, Gus said calmly,
「そうそう、失敗は誰にでもあるからね」
"That's right, everyone makes mistakes, you know."
それでも先生はいつものように許してはくれず、あきれた顔でため息をつきます。
Even so, the teacher didn't let it go as usual and sighed with an exasperated look.
「ドット、次までの宿題にします。練習してきなさい」
"Dot, I'm making this your homework for next time. Practice it."
「はーい……」
"Okay..."
いつものように家に帰って博士に相談すると、博士はニカッと笑ってある道具を取り出しました。
When she went home and consulted Doc as usual, Doc grinned and took out a certain tool.
「ハハハ！ 魔法で水に浮かべないなら、これを使えばいい！ 最新発明『張り付きブーツ』だ！」
"Ha ha ha! If you can't float on water with magic, just use this! My latest invention: The Sticky Boots!"
「体重がとても軽くなって、どこにでもピタッと張り付くブーツさ。これがあれば水の上だけじゃなく、家の壁や天井だって歩けちゃうんだぞ！」
"These boots make your body weight very light and stick tightly to anywhere. With these, you can walk not only on water but even on walls and ceilings of a house!"
博士は自信満々に説明してくれました。
Doc explained with full confidence.
「わあ、すごい！ 博士、ありがとう！」
"Wow, amazing! Thank you, Doc!"
ドットはさっそくそのブーツを履いて、街の中に繰り出しました。
Dot immediately put on the boots and headed out into the town.
博士の言う通り、そのブーツを履いていれば学校の池も水に沈まずにスタスタと歩けました。
Just as Doc said, wearing those boots, she could walk briskly on the school pond without sinking.
さらに、学校の壁や天井も歩けたので、ドットは教室の天井に張り付いた状態で、下から来たアイビーたちを驚かせました。
Furthermore, she could walk on the school's walls and ceilings, so Dot surprised Ivy and the others from below while stuck to the classroom ceiling.
「わあっ！ びっくりしたわ、ドット！」
"Whoa! You surprised me, Dot!"
アイビーは驚いてくれましたが、すぐに困った顔をしてドットに注意しました。
Ivy was surprised, but soon made a troubled face and warned Dot.
「でもドット、逆さになったスカートからドロワーズが見えて恥ずかしいから、早く降りてきて」
"But Dot, it's embarrassing because we can see your bloomers from your upside-down skirt, so come down quickly."
「えっ！ わわっ、ほんとだ！」
"Eh! Whoa, you're right!"
言われて気づき、顔を真っ赤にして恥ずかしくなったドットは、慌てて学校の窓から外へ飛び出していきました。
Noticing it after being told, Dot turned bright red with embarrassment and hurriedly flew out the school window.
そのまま学校の外の壁にピタッと立ったドットは、ふと上を見上げて閃きました。
Standing firmly on the outside wall of the school, Dot looked up and had a flash of inspiration.
「そうだ！ 学校のてっぺんから雲に飛び移ったら、雲の上を歩けるかもしれない！」
"I know! If I jump to a cloud from the top of the school, maybe I can walk on the cloud!"
ドットは壁を駆け上がり、一番高いところから、空に浮かぶ雲に向かって思い切りジャンプしました。
Dot ran up the wall, and from the highest point, jumped with all her might toward a cloud floating in the sky.
ポヨン！
Boing!
その実験は大成功！ ドットはフカフカの大きな雲の上を歩き回って、ポヨンポヨンとジャンプして遊ぶことができました。
The experiment was a great success! Dot was able to walk around on the big, fluffy cloud and play by jumping boing, boing.
「すごーい！ 雲の上って最高！」
"Amazing! Being on a cloud is the best!"
しかし、しばらく遊んでドットが学校に戻ろうとすると……大変です。
However, after playing for a while, when Dot tried to return to the school... oh no.
その雲は風に乗って、すでに学校から遠く離れた場所まで流されていて、近くに飛び移れそうな場所がありませんでした。
The cloud had caught the wind and drifted far away from the school, and there was no place nearby to jump to.
「どうしよう……」
"What should I do..."
しかも、張り付きブーツの充電が切れそうで、ピカピカと赤い光が点滅しています。
Moreover, the sticky boots' battery seemed to be running out, and a red light was blinking on and off.
一人で空をさまようことになったドットは、大きな声で叫びました。
Left wandering alone in the sky, Dot shouted in a loud voice.
「だれかー！ 助けてー！」
"Someone! Help me~!"
すると、その声を聞いて飛んできた影があります。
Then, there was a shadow that flew over after hearing her voice.
「ドット、大丈夫？」
"Dot, are you okay?"
同じように、フワフワの綿あめ雲に乗って現れたガスです。
It was Gus, who appeared riding on his fluffy cotton candy cloud just like before.
「ガス！ 助けに来てくれたの！」
"Gus! You came to help me!"
「うん。でも、ここからじゃ降りられないね。そうだ、瞬間移動の魔法を使えばいいんじゃない？」
"Yeah. But you can't get down from here. I know, why don't you use teleportation magic?"
ガスはおっとりと提案しました。
Gus suggested calmly.
「あっ、そうか！ その手があったわ！」
"Ah, that's right! I could do that!"
ガスの提案で思い出したドットは、前に使った魔法を唱えました。
Remembering thanks to Gus's suggestion, Dot cast the magic she had used before.
「魔法まぜまぜ、学校の池へゴー！ エイッ！」
"Magic Mix, Go to the School Pond! Yah!"
ボフン！ と煙が上がり、ドットは無事に学校の池の上に瞬間移動しました。
Puff! Smoke rose, and Dot safely teleported above the school pond.
ところが……。
However…
ドボーン！！
Splash!!
どうやらちょうどそのタイミングでブーツの充電が完全に切れてしまったようで、ドットは水面に着地できず、そのまま水の中へ落ちてしまいました。
It seemed the boots' battery completely ran out right at that moment, so Dot couldn't land on the water surface and fell straight into the water.
「ぷはっ！ また水底だよ〜！」
"Pfft! I'm at the bottom again~!"
それを、アヒルに乗って待っていたアイビーが、再び大きなくちばしで引き上げて助けてくれました。
Ivy, who was waiting on the duck, pulled her up and rescued her again with its large beak.
「ありがとうアイビー、助かっ……」
"Thank you Ivy, you saved..."
ドットがお礼を言いかけたその時、隣でまた大きな水しぶきが上がりました。
Just as Dot was about to say thank you, another big splash rose right next to her.
ドボーン！！
Splash!!
次にアヒルがくわえて助け出したのは、わざと池に飛び込んでずぶ濡れになったジャックスでした。
The next one the duck grabbed and rescued was Jax, who had deliberately jumped into the pond and was soaking wet.
「あはは！ 水遊びをするなら、水の上を走るより飛び込む方が面白いぜ！」
"Ahaha! If we're playing in the water, jumping in is way more fun than running on it!"
ジャックスは最高に楽しそうに笑っています。
Jax was laughing, looking like he was having the best time.
「確かに、そうかも！」
"You know what, you might be right!"
それを見たドットも、水の上を歩く魔法のことなんかすっかり忘れてしまいました。
Seeing that, Dot completely forgot about the magic to walk on water.
そしてそのまま、ジャックスやガスと一緒に池に飛び込んでは、アイビーのアヒルに助けられるという水遊びを繰り返して、みんなで笑い合いました。
Then, along with Jax and Gus, she kept repeating the water play of jumping into the pond and getting rescued by Ivy's duck, and they all laughed out loud together.
宿題が出来ずに明日先生に怒られるかもしれませんが、今みんなで楽しく遊べているドットには関係ないのかもしれません。
She might get scolded by the teacher tomorrow for not doing her homework, but maybe that doesn't matter to Dot, who is happily playing with everyone right now.
大切なのは、魔法や発明を成功させることじゃなくて、友達と一緒に今を楽しむことだったんですね。
The important thing wasn't successfully using magic or inventions, but enjoying the moment together with friends.
