ピーター・コクラン氏が遺したPDFから、『吸血鬼』に関する手紙を読んでみた。よく解らないところはウェルズリー大学のリポジトリにある影印を参照し、削除箇所と確認できた文字は抹消した。

「吸血鬼」と題された作品について、貴誌に何度も、私の名前が著者として加えられているのを見かけた。私は著者ではないし、問題の作品のことも今まで聞いたことがない。更に最近の誌面では、「吸血鬼」が正式に発表され、私の「ミティレーヌ島での邸宅」についての説明まで加わっている。この島は、数年前にレバントを旅行した際に時々通ったことがあり、居住することに異存はないけれども、まだ一度も住んだことのない場所である。何れも私のした事ではない。貴兄の好意において、上記広告の取り消しを求めるのは、不当ではなく、非礼にも当たるまいと考えるが如何。…もしその本が良く出来ていれば、誰であろうとも、真の作家の栄誉を奪うことになりかねない。…そして、もし愚作であれば、他の誰でもなく、私自身が責任を負うものでありたい。
In various numbers of your Journal – I have seen mentioned a work entitled “the Vampire” with the addition of my name as that of the Author. – I am not the author, and never heard of the work in question until now. In a more recent paper I perceive a formal annunciation of “the Vampire” with the addition of an account of my “residence in the Island of Mitylene” an Island which I have occasionally sailed by in the course of travelling some years ago through the Levant – and where I should have no objection to reside – but where I have never yet resided. – –
Neither of these performances are mine – and I presume that it is neither unjust nor ungracious to request that you will favour me by contradicting the advertisement to which I allude. – If the book is clever it would be base to deprive the real writer – whoever he may be – of his honours; – and if stupid – I desire the responsibility of nobody’s dullness but my own.
ご迷惑をおかけするが、よろしくお願いしたい。…非難としては大したものではなく、推測や報せにとどまっている限りは、他の何やかやと同じように、沈黙のうちに済ませても良かった。しかし、私が書いたこともない本や、住んだこともない住居を公に宣伝するのは、少しやりすぎだと思う。とりわけ私自身は、一方の記事の内容も、他方に書かれた出来事も、関知しないときには。

the trouble I give you, – the imputation is of no great importance, – and as long as it was confined to surmises and reports – I should have received it as I have received many others, in Silence. – But the formality of a public advertisement of a book I never wrote – and a residence where I never resided – is a little too much – particularly as I have no notion of the contents of the one – nor the incidents of the other.

対して其方はより傷つけてきたではないか、昨年の四旬節『メッセンジャー』に「私の献身」と「宗教のために社会を放棄すること」なぞ載せて。まあ、それに反論するつもりはない、個人的見解に過ぎないから。一方、他のものはある程度、読者に関わる。
– I have besides a personal dislike to “Vampires” and the little acquaintance I have with them would by no means induce me to divulge their secrets. – – You did me a much less injury by your paragraphs about “my devotion” and “abandonment of Society for the Sake of religion” – which appeared in your Messenger during last Lent; – all of which are not founded on fact – –
but, You see I do not contradict them, – – – because they are merely personal – whereas the others in some degree concern the reader – – – –

そもそもバイロン卿は何故、ディオダティ荘で怪奇譚の制作を持ちかけたのだろう。理由の一つは、親分肌なところがあった閣下に、仲間たちの才能を見てみたい、何なら作家デビューまで後押ししてやりたい気持ちがあったに違いない。ただ、利他的に見える行動であっても、詩人の動機はどこまでも自己中心的なので、自分が面白い、面白そうだと感じたに違いない。ぶっちゃけ、自分が出した難題を、人が解決しようと七転八倒する、その有様を見るのに勝るエンタテインメントなぞ存在しない。こうして書いてみるとバッシング必至なロクでもなさ加減だけど、まあ、そういう事だったに違いないと詩人としては感じ取る次第、悪しからず。
