English translation:
“Hey, look—dead weight... I mean, Orlando and Rumimina. And the weirdo from the student council, too.”
Ludovica was eating at the very same restaurant as us (for some baffling reason—why on earth would she come to a place like this?), and she strutted right over, accompanied by Hazuki.
(Oh no, no, no, no, no...)
“Hazuki, fix my hair.”
Hazuki obeyed the command without batting an eye. It was a textbook example of being affected by the 'Ludovica factor'—the real question is why? I should write a thesis on this.
“As you wish, Lady Ludovica.”
Rumimina smiled brightly at them and invited them to sit.
(How on earth does Rumimina manage not to short-circuit around people like this...?)
“Hello, Ludovica and Hazuki! Do you want to try this food they call... ramen?”
“No thanks, Rumimina. I just came to see how you people waste your time.”
I shot Ludovica a mocking, sarcastic grin.
“Oh, look! The discount commercial queen has arrived.”
“Hey! I was forced to do that, you know... Besides, my family's reputation is at stake—I refuse to let them down!”
Rinne looked over, her eyes narrowing with intense focus, as if she wanted to catch every single word.
“Orlando, is *this* the person you were laughing at earlier? ...Wait, this is getting interesting. It feels straight out of a character growth arc from one of my light novels!”
(Good grief... come to think of it, these two are my absolute biggest headaches. Putting them both together in the same room results in an equation whose only logical outcome is a massive waste of time. I really need to stop thinking about this.)
“That's right, Rinne. Look at her—she genuinely thinks she's the center of the universe. It's just pathetic how hard she tries to act superior only to fail. Wait, didn't you already know her? She was wasting time in the student council room that day.”
Rinne lifted her head, falling into a deep, contemplative pose.
“Let me think... No, Orlando, I barely know anyone on the student council. I only joined for the sugar rations and whatever sounded vaguely protagonist-like... Besides, she kind of gives off that rich girl vibe with hidden, complicated feelings.”
Ludovica stepped right up to Rinne.
“Hey, council weirdo—what was your name again, Rinne? I am *not* some background extra! I am far more important than you, you know! I'm even planning to audition for acting roles!”
“As if! You are *not* more important, so zip it. A true heroine has no time to waste on someone like you!”
Ludovica crossed her arms tightly.
“A heroine, please! Where did you even crawl out from...? Orlando, tell this lunatic to stop talking to me!”
Rumimina glanced over at me and whispered.
“Hehe, look, Orlando, it seems like they're getting along swimmingly.”
“I sincerely doubt that, Rumimina. But let them be; they'll burn out sooner or later due to the laws of physical exhaustion.”
The other customers in the restaurant were watching the scene with profound confusion. It wasn't every day you saw high school girls screaming nonsense across restaurant tables.
“Hey, keep it down... they're going to kick us out.”
Rinne flashed a wicked grin.
“Ludovica, Orlando told me that he actually pities you...”
“Hey, Rinne, I didn't mean it like that!”
Ludovica cut me off instantly.
“HEY! WHO ARE YOU PITYING?! Orlando, I demand that you crawl on the floor and beg for my forgiveness right now, or I'll have Hazuki force you! And besides, you only succeeded on that mission because of ME!”
“Why on earth would I do that? I was conducting my own investigation, and you just tagged along uninvited! And as for the library incident, YOU were the one whose sonic waves reached an excessively high amplitude!”
“Do NOT remind me of that!”
I grinned, lifting my hands in a mocking gesture.
“Oh? Did I accidentally wound your delicate pride?”
“Who do you think you're talking to?! My family holds absolute power; if I wanted, they could strip you of everything you own!”
“Oh, please. I shudder to think what your parents are like if *you* are the end result. They probably barely know how to do basic addition.”
“YOU WILL REGRET THIS!”
And then—
Rumimina, who had spent the majority of the argument trying to pry us apart, gently pulled Ludovica back.
“Um, p-please forgive Orlando, he's just... you know how he is.”
Ludovica looked back at me, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
“I'm leaving. And I never want to see you again. You ruined my special day... Let's go, Hazuki.”
She pushed open the establishment's front door and walked out.
A moment later, the waiter walked over to our table.
“Uhm... In all my years running this place, I've never seen anything quite like that. Oh, by the way, that young lady paid for your entire bill on her way out. Thanks for your patronage.”
Rinne quietly put her wallet away.
“Praise be to the power of plot armor working in my favor!”
I stood there, completely dumbfounded.
“A special... day...?”
Rinne stared straight at me, her expression dropping its playful facade.
“Seriously, Orlando? Why do you have to be so harsh to everyone...? Even for me, that was uncalled for.”
“I'm not being harsh, it's just... that... uh...”
(I don't know how to answer... Why am I like this? Am I actually a bad person...? Oh man, I need to fix this right now.)
“...”
Rumimina stepped closer, looking down with a heavy heart.
“Orlando... Hazuki told me that today is a very special, painful day for Ludovica... Do you think she's still hurting?”
I slowly stood up from my seat.
“Rumimina, Rinne, give me a moment. I'll be right back.”
I turned and bolted out the door after Ludovica.
