ある紳士の頭の中には、一軒の家があった。
そこには、彼のほかに二人と半分が暮らしていた。
一人は、いつも上機嫌な紳士だった。
一人は、素直で感情豊かな青年だった。
そして、もう半分は、家の奥にいた。
黒く、四角く、ほとんど喋らない。
ある日、紳士に若い弟子ができた。
「彼女は、五年間ここで学ぶつもりです。そのあとは独立するものだと思っていますよ」
紳士が言った。
上機嫌な紳士は微笑んだ。
「ええ。そうでしょうね」
「……言わないんですか？」
青年が尋ねた。
「言わないでおきましょう」
「なんかドキドキする。楽しい」
家の奥から音がした。
ガタ。
紳士は眉間を押さえた。
「いや、楽しいではなくてですね」
ガタガタ。
「本人は何も知らないんですよ？」
ガタガタガタガタ。
「ちょっと静かにしてください！」
そのとき、外から声がした。
「先生？」
家の中が静まり返った。
紳士は目を開けた。
目の前に、弟子の少女がいた。
「どうかなさいましたか？」
「いいえ」
彼はいつもの穏やかな顔で答えた。
「何でもありませんよ」
頭の中の家では、二人と半分がまだこちらを見ていた。
Inside a certain gentleman's mind stood a house.
Apart from himself, two and a half others lived there.
One was a gentleman who was perpetually in good spirits.
One was a young man, open-hearted and full of feeling.
And the remaining half lived somewhere deeper within the house.
Black, square, and almost entirely silent.
One day, the gentleman took on a young apprentice.
‘She intends to study here for five years. She believes that afterwards, she will leave and make her own way.’
The gentleman pointed this out.
The cheerful gentleman smiled.
‘Yes. I expect she does.’
‘...You're not going to tell her?’
the young man asked.
‘Let us say nothing for now.’
‘This is rather exciting. I like it.’
A noise came from somewhere deeper within the house.
*Clatter.*
The gentleman pressed his fingers to his brow.
‘No, this isn't a matter of whether it's exciting.’
*Clatter, clatter.*
‘She doesn't know anything about this, you realise?’
*Clatterclatterclatterclatter.*
‘Would you please be quiet!’
Just then, a voice came from outside.
‘Sir?’
The entire house fell silent.
The gentleman opened his eyes.
His young apprentice was standing before him.
‘Is something the matter?’
‘No.’
He replied with his usual gentle expression.
‘Nothing at all.’
Inside the house in his mind, the other two and a half were still watching him.
