Something Heavy’ and the Torch Quiet Dark Fantasy & Heavy Gothic | JP & EN
‘Something Heavy’ and the Torch
I wandered through the streets, now quite deserted, carrying something impossibly heavy against my chest.
Whether I had somewhere to go or not, I couldn't really say. I just... wanted a little night air, I suppose.
Every shop had already shut its doors.
One by one, the lights beneath the eaves were going out.
—Which was why
it was stranger that, down one narrow lane, a light was still burning.
There was an old gate.
Beside it, a single torch burned.
And beneath it—
stood a man, his hood drawn low over his face.
‘...That thing you carry about you. There is some tale behind it, I take it.’
I stopped without meaning to.
...He can see it...?
Well, even if someone stole the bloody thing... it wouldn't be worth anything...
Probably.
‘Worth nothing, you say... and yet you hold it as though it were most precious to you.’
He was right.
I was holding it carefully.
Making damned sure I didn't drop it.
But... there was no way I could simply set it down in broad daylight for all to see.
It would only get hurt.
I knew it would.
‘...Who are you?’
‘I stand watch.’
‘...Over what?’
The man slowly raised his head.
But even the torchlight could not reach beneath the deep shadow of his hood.
‘Over the gate.’
‘...I can see that.’
‘Then all is well.’
The flame gave a little crackle.
‘Beyond this gate, there are lights of a darker sort.
‘Those who would take fright at the sight of it... seldom come this way.
‘And mayhap, should it venture forth from your keeping, it too might find no cause for fear... and breathe easy for a while.’
I put a hand to my chest.
Hey.
How about it?
Want to come out of there...?
