Blanche and the Gentleman in the Hat Retro Romance Concept in Paris? | JP & EN
Blanche lived in a rather unusual flat.
It was spacious and bright, with room for flowers on the windowsill.
There was no rent to pay.
Instead, once every fortnight, she was required to write a letter to someone.
She could write about anything she pleased.
Her work.
Her days off.
The flowers she had noticed while out walking.
Sometimes, a reply would arrive.
The letters were courteous and gentle.
The writer even remembered little things she had mentioned only once, some time before.
Blanche thought how nice it was that someone read her letters so carefully.
From time to time, she would see a gentleman in a hat somewhere about the city.
On the other side of a café.
In a corner of the theatre.
On the pavement on a rainy day.
At dusk, as she made her way home from an artist's studio.
He was always some little distance away.
One day, Blanche wrote in her letter:
‘I saw a rather mysterious gentleman the other day.’
A reply arrived some time later.
‘That is a little concerning.’
Before long, Blanche decided to leave the city.
She wanted to live somewhere far away in the countryside, perhaps with a little shop of her own.
She wrote about that, too.
The reply said:
‘That may be a very good idea.’
Spring came.
Blanche moved to a new town.
It was a quiet place, full of trees and flowers.
One afternoon, she wandered leisurely along a road, stopping now and then to admire the flowers.
There was a house beside the road.
On the wall of one of its rooms hung a fresh, vivid portrait of Blanche.
On the desk lay a bundle of letters, carefully tied together.
And on a chair rested a gentleman's hat.
Outside the window, Blanche passed by.
From somewhere deeper within the room came the faint clink of a teacup.
