Part Two

April. We became second-years, and gained underclassmen.

Hasebe and Kobayashi were popular with the first-years too. The string orchestra was overwhelmingly female, but there were a few boys as well. Some of them were probably here for Hasebe or Kobayashi.

The second-year violin section was still the same three. Someone was standing in the hallway of the empty classroom where I practiced. It was Asao from the tennis team and his cronies.

"Is Kobayashi here?"

"She's practicing in the next room."

In the hallway, Asao was sizing Kobayashi up with his eyes, laughing crudely. I fell far short of even a man like him.

Then summer break arrived. At the club training camp, I had plenty of chances to talk not only with Hasebe and Kobayashi but also with the first-years—it was fun. I was aiming for music college, but I also thought that taking on students of my own wouldn't be so bad.

On the last night of camp, Hasebe was tired and went to bed early. I was cleaning up. Through the window, the stars were beautiful.

"Naruse. Good work."

I turned around to find Kobayashi standing there. She was dressed casually in a T-shirt and shorts, and unusually, her hair was down.

"Kobayashi, good work too."

Kobayashi paused for a moment as if thinking, then murmured:

"...Naruse, you like Seira, don't you."

I thought my heart would stop. As I stood there speechless, Kobayashi continued, without a smile, her eyes straight:

"I've noticed. For a long time."

"Eh."

"When Seira called you 'cool,' you turned bright red. And besides..."

She paused there and, unusually for her, softened the corners of her mouth just slightly.

"...Good luck. I'm rooting for you."

With that, she turned and went back to her room. I could only stand there.

A week after camp ended. When I came to school, Kobayashi wasn't there. Hasebe was wearing glasses, silently absorbed in her sheet music. During camp, she'd been laughing loudly with Kobayashi, so full of energy—but now her back somehow looked small.

"Kobayashi's not here?"

When I asked, Hasebe bit her lip for a moment, then looked down.

"Yeah..."

I didn't press further. Hasebe's voice wasn't its usual brightness. When the new term started, I heard that Kobayashi had suddenly dyed her hair blonde and stopped coming to school.

Hasebe didn't miss club practice. Even though she was still bad at playing, she came earlier than anyone and stayed later than anyone.

One morning, I happened to be the first to arrive at school and was playing violin in the clubroom. Bach's Partita No. 3 for solo violin. Before I knew it, I was absorbed. When I finished the Prelude, the sound of applause snapped me back. I looked up—and there was Hasebe. She was crying.

"There's only two of us second-years now."

With those words, she broke down crying. I couldn't say anything. All I could do was stay by her side.

After school club ended and we were cleaning up, I heard someone practicing the same passage over and over like a madman from the next practice room. They'd stop when the intonation was off, then start again.

When I went to look, it was Hasebe. Her sheet music was covered in pencil markings; fingerings had been erased and rewritten multiple times. She didn't notice me, frowning as she played the same passage again—off. And again from the top.

"With that fingering, you won't be able to get it—try shifting up here..."

When I spoke, Hasebe looked up, startled. Her eyes were slightly red.

"Can I borrow your eraser?"

I erased the original finger numbers and wrote new ones in pencil. She watched in silence.

"Thanks. But... that's your fingering, isn't it? I want to be able to do it on my own."

Her words made me pause. She didn't just "want to get better." Maybe she was trying to hold onto something—throwing herself into club activities to cope with Kobayashi leaving, or to keep herself from falling apart.

"You can't come up with fingerings overnight. I've had a violin since before I can remember."

My own voice was quiet.

"Yeah, I guess so. Sorry."

Just then, the folder with her sheet music fell to the floor with a thud. When I bent down to pick it up, a few wrinkled sheets of printer paper slipped out from between the pages. Hasebe quickly grabbed them.

"Thanks. Those are notes Yasuko and I passed in class. Pathetic, right? Clinging to scraps of paper like this. Yasuko and I are already..."

Words failed me. I quietly crouched down beside Hasebe. Without saying a word, I picked up the scattered sheet music and gently placed it in her hands.

"This is what music is for, right—when you need saving?"

That was all I could say. Hasebe looked up at me with tear-filled eyes. And nodded, just a little.

In that moment, something shifted inside me. I wanted to be by her side. Even if I couldn't do anything, just being there was enough. The pounding in my chest—so loud, so painful, so unbearable—had vanished as if it had never been.

Outside the music room window, the ginkgo leaves in the corner of the schoolyard were turning yellow, scattering with dry rustles.

By the time winter approached, "Kobayashi Yasuko" had become a forbidden word.

Come to think of it, Asao and his cronies had also transferred schools at some point. I heard rumors that Kobayashi had gone delinquent because of trouble with Asao.

Hasebe had lost both her love and her best friend at the same time. When I realized that, something inside me stirred—a desire to hold all of her close.

Then, one day after school, I was in the music room with Hasebe as usual. Now that we were second-years, our sectional practice together had increased.

Outside, cold rain was falling. The windowpanes were fogged white, and the only sounds in the room were our breathing and the scraping of bows on strings.

"I can't get this part in tune at all."

Hasebe lowered her instrument and gave a wry smile.

"For leaps, if your thumb and first finger are stable..."

I stood up and looked at her hand.

We were close.

From the hem of her cardigan, the same scent as that day drifted faintly to my nose. I desperately hid my racing heart as I lightly touched her thumb.

The moment I looked up, our eyes met.

At close range—close enough that our breaths intermingled—she gave a soft smile.

"Hey, Naruse."

"Yeah?"

"You're so good at playing, but you always practice with me. You never get mad, and you're easy to understand."

"I like teaching."

Hasebe's eyes widened in surprise for a moment, and then she chuckled.

"Thanks. If you weren't here, I might have quit the club and gone delinquent too."

That smile was so dazzling.

If only this moment in this small music room could last forever. If only the sound of the rain outside, the noise of the school, even Kobayashi—everything could just disappear. I just wanted to sit beside her in this narrow space, looking at the same sheet music.

"Hey, want to practice together at the karaoke place near the station after this?"

Hasebe said as she put away her instrument.

"Wait, you still want to practice?"

"Yeah. Next year, we'll be third-years."

"Fine, I guess."

My chest felt like it was melting with warmth.

It wasn't a date. Just practice. I knew that. Even so—someone like me, walking to the station with a girl, going into a karaoke place together... it felt like a dream.

Hasebe started packing up in a hurry. Watching her back, I gently placed my hand over my own chest.

Still fat. Still plain. Still nervous and unable to speak well in front of girls.

But in this moment, I felt like I could be her "special one."

Outside, the rain was still falling steadily, but strangely, I didn't feel cold at all.

A few weeks later. Hasebe was chosen as club president. When the advisor announced it, she opened her eyes wide in surprise, and then tears spilled out before she could stop them. "Someone like me..." she started to say, but then bit her lip and nodded. Everyone in the club respected her—she had practiced harder than anyone.

On the day of the concert, Hasebe sat in the front row, at the first stand of the second violins, leading everyone. Her intonation was still off sometimes, and her bow still trembled. But her back was straight, and she looked reliable.

I was the concertmaster. When I listened closely to the second violins' sound, I felt a warmth slowly fill my heart.

As the applause rang out, Hasebe looked at me. Her mouth curved into a smile, her eyes a little teary, but she was laughing.

—That night. Even after I got home, took a bath, and got into bed, my mind was full of that applause and her smile.

Her standing at the front. Her hair swaying with every bow stroke. The glistening look in her eyes when she turned to me after the performance.

In my futon, I could feel the heat rising from the core of my body.

My fingers moved unconsciously over the sheets. The brief sensation of touching her hand when I returned her violin. The warmth of brushing her thumb. That was the only tangible memory I had.

Eventually, when everything fell quiet, I stared blankly at the ceiling. Her smile was still burned into the back of my eyelids.

—I love her. But... if I wished for more, I'd surely break something.

The next day after school. Once club activities ended, I was alone in the empty classroom. I took up my violin. My fingers naturally began to trace Kreisler's "Liebesleid."

Back then, I played it with the hope that it would reach her. But now, it was different.

The sound echoed lonely in the empty room. The day I played on her violin. The summer day she laughed and said "cool." She'd probably already forgotten all of it.

Even so—that was fine.

I slowly lifted the bow from the strings. The resonance faded into the air.

It didn't need to reach her. It became sound. That was enough.

Tomorrow, I'll play this piece again. The lonesome "Liebesleid" will keep on sounding.
