"Cherry"

Part One

The music room at the end of summer smelled of damp wood and rosin. Among the short-sleeved white shirts, cardigans were beginning to appear here and there.

The after-school setting sun stretched the shadow of the window frame long across the floor. Light reflected off the music stands, making the sheet music almost too bright to read.

The empty classroom next to the music room was my sanctuary. When I rested the instrument on my left collarbone and took my stance, I could forget everything about my pathetic self. I was practicing Saint-Saëns's Violin Concerto, violin in position.

The powerful resonance of the G string melted into the twilight. When the bow met the strings, the vibration of the instrument traveled through my collarbone—it felt good. I was absorbed for a while. In that space where I should have heard nothing but my own sound, a light set of footsteps mingled in. Without even turning around, I knew it was her.

"Hey, about this part—I can't get my bow to bounce right..."

I looked up to find Hasebe Seira and Kobayashi Yasuko, both first-year students just like me. The three of us were the only first-years in the violin section, but the other two had no prior experience with string instruments.

Hasebe, who was a quarter, had translucent white skin, a high nose that set her apart from most Japanese girls, and softly waving hair that swayed gently. She was tall and had a slightly world-weary air about her—there were quiet rumors among the boys that "she looks like a model." The girl always with her, Kobayashi, was petite and cute like an idol. When the two of them stood together, they made a striking pair.

Hasebe peered at my music stand with a troubled but somehow endearing smile.

"Oh, you were practicing a different piece. Sorry for interrupting."

"It's fine. Which part?"

"From measure 48... it's tough."

As she leaned in to look at the music stand, she turned her face toward me. Close enough that I could feel her breath. Our eyes met. My heart gave one loud thump in my chest, and I forgot to breathe.

*Stop it*, I thought. I desperately scolded myself.

She's just a clubmate. I'm definitely better at playing than anyone else here. That's why she just happened to come listen—it doesn't mean anything more. Besides, I know what I look like in the mirror. I'm fat. Not tall. And my face is pimply and plain. Guys like Asao-kun, who are in the popular crowd and always making girls laugh, live in a completely different world.

I'm the kind of guy girls describe as "easy to talk to, but..."—that's where it ends.

"Drop it and let it bounce."

I spoke carefully, trying to keep my voice from cracking. Had I ever been this nervous even in masterclasses or competitions? My right hand was trembling.

The faint sweet scent of shampoo from Hasebe's wavy hair tickled my nose, and my mind went blank. Her eyes, looking up at me from close range, were slightly light in color. I felt like I was being drawn in.

—Why is this girl so defenseless? I forced myself to keep a straight face.

"I see! Thanks. Seriously, you're amazing."

Hasebe's face lit up, and she gave my shoulder a light pat. At that moment, I caught Kobayashi's eye. She remained expressionless, giving nothing away.

Hasebe grinned mischievously.

"Naruse, when you play the violin, you're actually really cool."

Something in my brain short-circuited with a loud bang.

"Huh?"

My voice cracked.

It wasn't a joke. She wasn't making fun of me. Hasebe was looking straight at me with those pure eyes of a child who simply said what came to mind, completely serious.

I could feel my cheeks burn all the way to the tips of my ears.

Being called "cool" was a first for me. And it came from the person I had a crush on. I hadn't prepared for this at all, so the impact was devastating.

My mind was in chaos, and I averted my eyes without thinking. No words came out. I found myself looking down.

Then Kobayashi, still deadpan, spoke.

"Yeah, really cool."

"Right? Come on, play the piece you were practicing!"

Kobayashi quickly returned to another practice room, leaving just me and Hasebe.

She kept looking at me. I played the opening of the Saint-Saëns with power. Thank god it wasn't something delicate like Sibelius—she wouldn't notice I was trembling.

I turned away to hide my red face, taking my position with the instrument. My fingers shook as I held the bow and set it to the strings. But my head was filled with her words from just moments ago, and I couldn't even tell if my intonation was right anymore.

The person I loved was so close. It was sweet and unbearably painful all at once.

Next week, I was going to perform at the prefectural music festival. Even though I was a first-year, I'd be playing a solo, with the club members accompanying me. Hasebe and Kobayashi were both beginners and couldn't play yet, so they were sitting it out—but they'd be watching from the audience.

If I played well, could I tell her? No, I couldn't.

If I could go out with Hasebe.

If I could hold her hand.

If her breath brushed my ear and she whispered, "You were so cool"—

I thought I could forget everything by throwing myself into practice. But the word "cool" kept replaying in my head over and over.

The sound was there. But even I could tell it was rough.

Just imagining it made my ears burn. Beneath my uniform, I could feel something heating up beyond my control.

The concert was a huge success, but every day, looking in the mirror, I lost confidence. Someone like me could never—

From the brilliance of the stage to gym class. It was during the 50-meter dash time trials.

"Ready, set, go!"

At the start, my classmates in gym clothes sprang forward. Their slender, agile legs kicked off the ground like springs. Meanwhile, my legs were heavy. My knees wouldn't lift properly. The classmates who had started with me were already crossing the finish line one after another. I was out of breath. My lungs burned. Every time I ran, my thighs bounced and the track pants fabric rubbed against itself.

"Naruse is so slow."

"Lame."

It was Asao and his cronies laughing loudly. Asao said, laughing, "What do you eat to get that heavy?" I felt like crying.

One day after school.

"Yasuko, do you have a crush on anyone? I want a boyfriend, you know. Someone like Asao-kun..."

"Hmm."

I overheard Hasebe and Kobayashi's conversation. If only I were as handsome as Asao. Tall, no acne, slim, athletic, better at talking. If only she could see me as a person, not just "one of the crowd"—

"...Naruse, are you okay?"

The next thing I knew, Hasebe and Kobayashi were peering down at me. Apparently, I'd collapsed from anemia.

"We found you passed out in the empty classroom and freaked out! Yasuko and I carried you and laid you down!"

"Good thing you weren't holding your instrument. It was in its case. Did you push yourself too hard practicing?"

The sparkling eyes of the pretty girls were right in front of me, filled with concern. Their lips were slightly parted. A breath escaped and brushed my face...

"Sorry. I'm fine."

I was not fine at all. The inside of my body was burning.

As Hasebe and Kobayashi watched me worriedly, I slowly sat up.

"I'm going back to practice. Seira, stay with him."

Our eyes met. Kobayashi, always poker-faced, wasn't smiling. But her eyes seemed to shine a little more gently than usual. As she passed by me, she said in a voice so low only I could hear:

"Good luck."

*Huh?* I looked up, but she had already turned away. Before I could ask what she meant, the door closed. It was just me and Hasebe in the room.

"The violin is so cool, you know. I've always admired it..."

Hasebe spoke slowly.

"I was so moved when I realized there was someone this good in the same club."

I couldn't speak. I was too nervous. Hasebe continued.

"In elementary school, I was bullied. Because of my name... and how I looked... But now, even though I'm still bad at it, I play with everyone, and I have a best friend, and I'm really happy."

I was a little surprised. Still, no words came. Only my pulse raced furiously.

"Is the violin like a friend to you, Naruse? You don't really hang out with everyone else."

"Huh. I don't know. But... the violin is like something that can speak feelings that words can't, I guess...?"

"Yeah."

Hasebe was looking at me intently. If only I were good-looking. If only I were Asao. If only I had my instrument with me right now...

Just then, I saw Hasebe's violin.

"Let me borrow your violin."

I took the violin from her. My heart was pounding. It was a cheap-looking beginner instrument, but when I played a double stop, it sounded like Hasebe.

"Wow, my violin can make that sound..."

My heartbeat quickened, thundering in my ears.

She didn't know. How much I thought about her. How much I wanted to touch her. How much I savored this ache, unable to reach her.

I played Kreisler's "Liebesleid." The sweet, sorrowful melody flowed like tears trickling down. If only this feeling could reach her.

The girl I loved so much, so dearly, so achingly, was gazing at me.

Please, let everything I poured into this sound reach her.

A single pair of hands applauded.

"Amazing! Thank you!"

Just a little longer.

If this distance could last, I felt like I could stay here forever. And then—

The door slid open.

"Seira, we have ensemble practice. Oh, Naruse, you can stay resting. I already told the teacher."

Kobayashi stood there. Her usual iron mask was in place, but her eyes moved briefly, as if measuring the distance between me and Hasebe.

"Oh, yeah, I'm coming!"

Hasebe stood up lightly and took back her violin. At that moment, her fingers brushed against mine. It was only an instant, but an electric current shot through my entire body.

"Thank you!"

She waved and left the practice room. All I could do was hold onto the faint scent she left behind.

—That night, in my futon, I relived the sensation of that touch over and over. That one moment had been eternity.
