……一か月後、私の少し寂しい誕生日会の席で、先生は私を普通の一年生より一つ上の寮制の貴族学校に送ると言いましたが、たいした影響はありませんでした。リエンはちょうど普通の貴族の子供が通う年頃で、私と一緒にこの学校に入学しました。
新学期の始まりは春です。私と黎安が馬車に乗ると、窓の外は皇都の繁華街でした。様々な人——冒険者、騎士、商人、学生……にぎやかです。学校はこの繁華街のはずれにありますから、静かではありますが、日常生活には比較的便利な方です。
私たちは今の第一王子と新しい貴族の嬢として入学したわけではありませんから、それは余計なトラブルを引き起こします。私はノアという代名で、中等伯爵の息子という身分で、リアンは小間使いとして入学しました。
校庭はとても大きくて、各種類の場所は持つべきです:運働場、体育館、超雄大な教室棟、及び1つの非常に古典主義の色彩の図書館、更にプールがあって、このプールはとても簡単に作ることができるものではありません。

そして何度かテストをした結果、私は当然のように普通科に、リアンは意外にも魔導科に配属されました。一般的にメイドは(ふりをしていますが)主人と離れないのですが、上層部の中にはあえてそうする人もいて、ちょっとした揉め事があったそうです。その結果、魔導課に配属されることになりました。どうかしませんように。
それから一カ月か二カ月は、ごく普通の学校生活でした。学校の内容は、私が子どもの頃に師匠に習っていたものとはまったく違っていて、衝突するところもありました。そういうところに力を入れていたのですが、先生に聞いても試験のときの答えしか返ってこないので、私はその図書館の常連になりました。いつも黎安さんと一緒に本を読んでいました。今では図書館の先生も私と仲良くなりました。
6月中旬、学校で競技会が開かれました。最終的にはトップの方が私を勝たせてくれたので、全力で辞退しましたが、誰がトップになっても面倒なことがつきまとうので、引き受けました。ちなみに、リアンは今回の大会には参加していません。
この試合はいくつかの教科の生徒が参加するトーナメント形式で五日間行われますが、どんな方法であれ、相手を撃てれば勝ちとなります。実際には、人は誰でも節度をわきまえているので、問題にはなりません。
ところが、このコンクールでは、この不文律にもかかわらず、騎士科の生徒が何人かのコンテスタントを気絶させてしまったそうですが、幸いにして被害はありませんでした。他の人から聞いた話では、ミリーといって、騎士科にはいないほどの奇才で、剣の腕は優れていますが、性格は正直すぎるそうです。何人もの人に嫌われて戦ってきましたが、一度も負けたことがなく、陰器を使われても平気で倒してきました。

ここ数日のレースは、私にとっては退屈なもので、相手はわざと隙を見せたり、早々に降参したりしていました。僕は順調にファイナルまで来て、相手が優勝するまでうまくいきました。
壮大な音楽が鳴り響き、私は黙って表彰台に上がり、気分は悪くても職業的な微笑を浮かべることしかできませんでした。試合が終わった後、宿舎のベッドで一人で寝ていました。
