鎌倉山と言っても、森林のトレイルを歩くわけではなく、ある実業家が開発した住宅地の道を歩くのである。ただしいわゆる住宅地の家並みではなく、一般的な区画割り住宅の数倍の大きさの屋敷が点在する景観を想像いただいた方がいい。遠く海を望む傾斜地を取り入れた巨大な敷地の生垣伝いに歩く。ほとんど歩く人には出会わない。ここには各界の成功者のほか、山を下った大船に映画の撮影所があったことから、かつては役者も居を構えた。春は目抜き通りが桜のトンネルのようになり、夏は育った樹々が日陰を作り、秋は色付き、冬は落ち葉を踏む散歩道になる。そんな四季を成功者たちが愛した。ケーキ、手打ち蕎麦、ローストビーフなどの老舗、英国から輸入したアンティーク雑貨、苔玉に植物をアレンジしたものを売るお店などが山の各所に点在し、ずっと愛され続けている。観光客がひしめく鎌倉市街の喧騒の外で、陽に照らされた海原を遠くに見て過ごせる別天地なのである。
