隙間から差し込む光に起こされ、カーテンを開けると、山並みの先の海原は9時の日差しを受け輝いていた。少し寝すぎた。足元では早く外に出たいと訴えるベティがまとわりつきクンクン言う。この20フィートのキャンピングトレーラーは、自宅のある鎌倉の町から数キロ離れた鎌倉山の月極駐車場に置いてある。旅に出るときはここまでクルマで来てジョイントして出て行くのだが、何にもない週末は自転車でやって来て、この中で過ごしたり、鎌倉山をベティと散策して過ごす。トレーラーには前の旅で買い込んだ食材の残りがあるので、2日ほど閉じ込められても暮らせる。電気は屋根のソーラーパネルで冷蔵庫はまかなえるし、搭載しているプロパンガスで暖かいシャワーが使える。ヨットの内装を模したウォールナットを各所に使用したインテリアはクラシックだが、落ち着く空間ではある。丸ノ内線のシートのようなソファーはベティのお気に入りの居場所。あごをつけ、私のことをいつも伺っている。
