ベティとの旅 はじめに Travel with Betty Prologue

アラスカに暮らし野生の動物を撮り続けた写真家．故．星野道夫は「今こうしているときにも、地球の裏側ではムースの大群が大移動していることをイメージすることが大事だ」と言った。荒涼とした海岸の先の海原を年老いた大きなヒゲクジラが目一杯の低めのジャンプをし、大きな飛沫を広範囲に飛び散らせながら着水する光景を見ることもなく、私は今裏地球の机でPCに向かっている。足元にはごろりと弛緩した愛犬ベティが横たわる。生まれて間もなく引き取り一緒に暮らしてきたこいつは見た目は違う生き物だが、同じ地球上の近所で出会い一緒にいる。言葉でのやり取りはないが、逆に欲求の形はストレートでわかりやすい。耳の下の柔らかい肉を揉んでほしいときは私の手を鼻で突く。私が手を組んでいるときもほどくようにグイグイ鼻をねじ込んでくる。外来種だが日本で生まれ鎌倉に連れてこられて7年間、鎌倉の路地、葉山の里山を歩き、国内の色々なところを旅してきた、たまたま一緒に人生を共有することになったこいつとの日々を綴っていきたい。
