Rose
一本の赤いバラを貰った。大切な人からだった。
私はそれが嬉しくて、一生懸命そのバラを守ろうとした。
毎日毎日、花瓶の水を入れ替えて、太陽の光を浴びせた。
でも数日後に枯れてしまった。水の質が悪かったらしい。
その後、一本の黄色いバラを貰った。同じ人からだ。
今度こそは枯らさないぞ、と気合を入れてお世話をした。たった一日でも長持ちするように。
でもだめだった。陽の光が強すぎたみたい。
またやってしまった、と私は泣いた。
その後、一本のピンクのバラを貰った。また同じ人から。
今度こそ、と縋る思いでそのバラを受け取った。
綺麗な水に適度な日光を浴びせた。24時間そのバラから目を離さなかった。
そのバラはどんどん弱っていった。理由は全く分からない。
私は泣かなかった。もう私には何もできない、と思った。
その後、百本の白いバラを目の前に出されて、結婚してください、と言われた。同じ人からだ。
私はそのバラが怖くて、私に何ができるのか、と問われている気がして、ごめんなさい、と断った。
私はその日から部屋から出ていない。
花瓶には濁った水だけが残っている。
I was given a single red rose.
It came from someone dear to me.
Overjoyed, I tried with all my heart to preserve it.
Day after day, I replaced the water in the vase and set it gently in the light.
Yet after only a few days, it withered.
The water, it seemed, had been wrong.
Then I was given a single yellow rose.
From the same person.
This time, I resolved not to let it fade.
If only it could live one day longer.
I tended it carefully.
Still, it failed.
Perhaps the light had been too harsh.
I wept, thinking I had done it again.
Later, a single pink rose was placed in my hands.
Once more, from the same person.
Clinging to a fragile hope, I accepted it.
I gave it clear water and measured light.
I did not look away, not even for a moment.
Even so, the rose steadily weakened.
I could not understand why.
This time, I did not cry.
I believed there was nothing left for me to do.
Then one day, one hundred white roses appeared before me.
“Will you marry me?” he asked.
From the same person.
Those roses frightened me.
It felt as though I was being asked what I could give, and what I could never protect.
I said I was sorry, and I declined.
Since that day, I have not left my room.
In the vase, only cloudy water remains,
quietly waiting for nothing to bloom.
