The Shelter in Wild
Sorry for the earlier mistake. Chapter 3 was removed temporarily. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Previously, Akira Tokido survived the forest and encountered the horrors of a ruined village filled with undead. With danger lurking around every corner, he has learned that surviving in Caldera requires more than courage, it requires careful observation, quick thinking, and understanding the world itself.
In this chapter, Akira searches for shelter and slowly begins to adapt to this strange, dangerous land. Every step could bring safety… or a new threat.
Akira sat at the edge of the forest, his back pressed against the rough bark of a fallen tree. His chest rose and fell unevenly as he struggled to catch his breath.
Even though he had escaped, the sounds of the undead still echoed faintly in his mind. The low growls.
The unnatural scraping of their feet across the dirt. The way their hollow eyes had stared at him as if he were nothing more than prey.
He shuddered.
For a long moment, he simply sat there, staring at the forest floor while his heart slowly calmed.
Then the pain in his shoulder reminded him that the danger hadn’t been a nightmare.
Akira carefully lifted his sleeve.
A long scratch ran across his shoulder where the undead creature’s claws had struck him. The wound wasn’t deep, but the skin around it was red and irritated. The crude bandage he had wrapped around it earlier was damp and slightly loose.
He touched it cautiously.
Warmth spread faintly through the injured area.
“Is it the bandage…?” he muttered quietly.
Earlier, in his panic, he had crushed one of the glowing herbs he found nearby and mixed it with water before wrapping the wound. At the time, he hadn’t been thinking clearly. He had simply hoped it would help.
But now that he looked at it more closely, the pain had noticeably faded.
Akira leaned back against the tree and exhaled slowly.
“So the plants here actually have effects…"
That realization made something click in his mind.
This world wasn’t like Earth.
Everything here from the strange glowing herbs to the undead creatures followed different rules. If he wanted to survive in Caldera, he couldn’t just wander blindly through the forest.
He had to observe.
Learn.
Adapt.
Akira looked down at the forest floor around him.
Earlier, those same herbs had seemed mysterious and dangerous. But now he realized they might also be useful.
Maybe even lifesaving.
“If I had known about that sooner…” he whispered.
He shook his head.
Regret wouldn’t help him now.
What mattered was what he learned from here onward.
Survival in this world wouldn’t depend on strength alone. It would depend on knowledge.
Every plant.
Every sound in the forest.
Every creature.
All of it could mean the difference between life and death.
Akira slowly pushed himself to his feet.
His legs still trembled slightly from exhaustion, but they held.
The sun had begun to sink behind the trees, and the golden light filtering through the branches was already fading.
Night would come soon.
And after what he had seen in the ruined village, the thought of wandering through the forest in darkness made his stomach tighten.
“I need shelter,” he said quietly.
This time, he moved more carefully.
Every step was slow and deliberate as he followed the natural slope of the land.
He avoided thick bushes and listened closely for movement around him.
The forest was quiet, but it wasn’t the peaceful silence he remembered from earlier.
It was the kind of silence that hid things.
Dangerous things.
Time passed slowly as Akira moved through the dense trees.
Several times he stopped to inspect unfamiliar plants growing along the path. Some had wide leaves that glowed faintly in the fading light. Others released sharp medicinal scents when the wind brushed against them.
He didn’t touch them.
Not yet.
For now, observing was enough.
After nearly an hour of cautious walking, something unusual appeared through the trees.
Akira stopped immediately.
At first, he thought it was just another cluster of rocks. But as he stepped closer, the shape became clearer.
Wooden walls.
A roof.
A door hanging slightly crooked on rusted hinges.
“A cabin…?”
Hope flickered weakly inside his chest.
The structure stood in a small clearing, partially hidden behind thick vines and moss-covered branches.
The wood looked old and weathered, but the walls were still standing.
No smoke rose from the chimney.
No lights shone through the windows.
It looked abandoned.
Akira approached slowly.
Every instinct told him to be cautious. After the ruined village and the undead attack, trusting anything in this world felt dangerous.
Still, the thought of spending the night inside four walls instead of under the open sky was too tempting to ignore.
He stepped onto the creaking wooden porch.
The door moved slightly when he pushed it.
It opened with a long, dry groan.
Dust floated through the air inside the cabin, illuminated by thin beams of evening light filtering through the cracked windows.
Akira stepped inside carefully.
The air smelled old and stale, like a place that hadn’t been visited in a long time.
But it was shelter.
And for the first time since arriving in Caldera, Akira felt the faintest hint of relief.
Maybe… just maybe… he could survive here.
