4-13 “Strive to Be Better Than Your Former Self”

> Go ahead and choose being better—but not better than others; rather, better than you were before.
>
> Go ahead and choose having more, but only so that you have more to give.

The fundamental teaching of Conversations with God is this:
“First and foremost, cherish yourself.”
From there, the definition of “self” gradually expands—
to include your family, your workplace, and eventually others around you.
In Conversations with God, it is said:
“It is fine to strive to be better—but strive to be better than your former self.”
To improve oneself is, in essence, an act of honoring and valuing oneself.
However, in today’s society, we often hear terms like “winners” and “losers,” as if success depends on surpassing or defeating others.
Yet the teaching here is clear:
Do not seek to be better than others—seek to be better than who you were before.
Certainly, comparing ourselves with others or engaging in competition may sometimes help us understand who we are.
But what truly matters is not becoming superior to others—it is becoming a better version of ourselves than we were in the past.
