3-2 “The institution of marriage has been your attempt at creating eternality”

> You will strive as a species to experience a love that is unlimited, eternal, and free. The institution of marriage has been your attempt at creating eternality. With it, you agreed to become partners for life. But this did little to produce a love which was "unlimited" and "free."

*Conversations with God* explains that marriage was created by human beings with the noble intention of making love last forever. However, it suggests that this institution has not succeeded in realizing love that is truly “unlimited” and “free.”
The high divorce rates seen around the world bear witness to this truth (approximately 37% in Japan and 50% in the United States).
Since no two people are exactly alike, it follows that no two expressions of love can ever be identical.
The book teaches that marriage should not be regarded as a once-in-a-lifetime binding contract, but rather as a free and conscious choice—one that may be renewed, redefined, or even released through divorce or remarriage.
In this view, marriage is not a limitation imposed on love, but one of the many ways in which love continues to evolve toward greater freedom and authenticity.
