1-1 “The idea that sex is only to make babies is naive”

> Procreation is the happy aftereffect, not the logical forethought, of most human sexual experience. The idea that sex is only to make babies is naive, and the corollary thought that sex should therefore stop when the last child is conceived is worse than naive. It violates human nature—and that is the nature I gave you.

> Sexual expression is the inevitable result of an eternal process of attraction and rhythmic energy flow which fuels all of life.

--------------------
According to *Conversations with God*, procreation is a happy outcome of sexual experience, not its primary purpose. To claim that sex should exist only for producing children is called naive, and to end sexual intimacy once no more children are desired is considered a denial of human nature itself.
By contrast, traditional Christianity has often emphasized procreation as the primary purpose of sex, and in stricter interpretations even marital intimacy could be viewed as sinful. The dialogues instead stress that sex is not a sin but a natural expression of life’s desire for unity.
Just as opposite forces in nature — positive and negative charges, or the poles of a magnet — are drawn together, so too are human beings. New life may emerge from this attraction, but reproduction is a result, not the reason, for sex.
Like eating, sex serves purposes beyond survival. We do not eat only for nutrition but also for pleasure and joy. Likewise, sex is one of life’s experiences through which people encounter intimacy, delight, and the divine in many forms.
