女神アルテミスの口上 Artemis Prologizes
おそらく女神アルテミスは、先住民の地母神をギリシャ神話に取り込んだもので、月の女神セレーネーと同一視された。アテーナイ（ギリシャ共和国）では知恵の女神アテーネーの人気に及ばなかったものの、エフェソス（トルコ共和国イズミル県内）では極めて崇敬され、その神殿は世界七不思議に数えられた。
太陽神アポローンの妹とされるので、アポローンの息子である医神アスクレーピオスは甥に当たる。狩猟を司る処女神であるが、ヒッポリュトスには姉のように接し、連れ立って狩りに出たという。
海神ポセイドーンの孫にしてアテーナイの王となった英雄テーセウスが、アマゾーンの女王を娶り生んだ息子がヒッポリュトス。その後テーセウスは、クレータ王ミーノースとパーシュパエーの娘パイドラーを后に迎え、アカマースとデーモポーンを生んだ。
妾こそ女神の1柱なり、アンブロシアなる宮殿に坐す。
I AM a Goddess of the ambrosial courts,
此処を措きては、女王の誇り高きこと、
And save by Here, Queen of Pride, surpassed
住まう寺院の白きこと、この世界にまたと無し。
By none whose temples whiten this the world.
天空の彼方、我が輝ける月を転ばし往けり、
Thro’ Heaven I roll my lucid moon along;
蒼白たる者共が束の間を、妾は地獄に落としき。
I shed in Hell o’er my pale people peace;
大地に妾は、生きとし生けるものどもを気遣い守護す、
On Earth, I, caring for the creatures, guard
黄色いオオカミ艶やかな雌キツネ各々仔を妊めるを。
Each pregnant yellow wolf and fox-bitch sleek.
すべての羽根ある母の雛が育つを、
And every feathered mother’s callow brood,
緑の溜まり場と孤独を愛するような連中を。
And all that love green haunts and loneliness.
人々は貞潔を以て妾を拝し、冠を提げる
Of men, the chaste adore me, hanging crowns
赤と黒からなるポピーの、花冠と茎からなる、
Of poppies red to blackness, bell and stem,
此処アテナイに於ける妾が印象に拠り。
Upon my image at Athenai here;
さてこの身罷れる青年、アスクレピオスその身を屈めしは、
And this dead Youth, Asclepios bends above,
妾が最愛の者なりき。長靴履ける妾が歩みに彼ぞ
Was dearest to me. He my buskined step
着いて参りき。野生の森、緑豊かなる道々、
To follow thro’ the wild-wood leafy ways,
喘ぐ雄鹿を追いかけたり、或いは投矢携え駆け回り
And chase the panting stag, or swift with darts
駈けるを止みし折節は、ヒョウが低く構え居り、
Stop the swift ounce, or lay the leopard low,
他の神なぞ敬うべくもなかったが。
Neglected homage to another God:
どこからともなくアフロディーテ、真夜中の煙でもあるまいに
Whence Aphrodite, by no midnight smoke
次第に薄らいでいく、嫉妬を縫い込まれしは
Of tapers lulled, in jealousy dispatched
不快極まりない欲望、虻刺すが如くの、
A noisome lust that, as the gadbee stings,
彼が継母と成れるパイドラーに取り憑かれたるは
Possessed his stepdame Phaidra for himself
偉大なる不在の配偶者たりしテーセウスが息子
The son of Theseus her great absent spouse.
ヒッポリュトスは怒りに満ちて振り払えり
Hippolutos exclaiming in his rage
どうにもならぬ王妃に向かい。女は生を
Against the miserable Queen, she judged
共に出来ずと知りぬれば、心臓刺しき
Life insupportable, and, pricked at heart
アマゾーンなる異邦の種族は然るべく
An Amazonian stranger’s race should dare
女を厭はば、その首絞めて死なしめき。
To scorn her, perished by the murderous cord:
さて女死すも、書き物に逆恨み尽くせり
Yet, ere she perished, blasted in a scroll
その貶めんとす彼が名声傷つけられず。
The fame of him her swerving made not swerve,
されどテーセウス王の帰り来りて読むや真に受く、
Which Theseus read, returning, and believed,
かくして目も眩む怒りに遭い追放されぬは
So, exiled in the blindness of his wrath,
終始一貫罪なき男、誠実にして、
The man without a crime, who, last as first,
陛下に真実漏らさざりき。
Loyal, divulged not to his sire the truth.
ここに海神ポセイドーンよりテーセウス賜りし
Now Theseus from Poseidon had obtained
彼が望みの3つは叶えらるべきものにして、
That of his wishes should be granted Three,
その1つを直ちに願えるは—「生きたまま
And this he imprecated straight—alive
ヒッポリュトスの他所へ到るまじきことを！」
May ne’er Hippolutos reach other lands!
ポセイドーン聴こし召したり、哀々！さて漸くかの王子
Poseidon heard, ai ai!And scarce the prince
踏み入れたるは馬車の足置き、
Had stepped into the fixed boots of the car,
そは脚元安んずるものにして、受くるは
That gave the feet a stay against the strength
エネティア馬その他の有り余る馬力
Of the Henetian horses, and around
彼の体は手綱を投げ、そのスピードを上げ
His body flung the reins, and urged their speed
海岸の岩やら丸石やらを伝って。
Along the rocks and shingles of the shore,
ところがその時、波を掻き分け化け物1頭飛び出して、
When from the gaping wave a monster flung
その悍ましき身体、駿馬の行く手を遮れり！
His obscene body in the coursers’ path!
海神が牛の巻き広がるに、恐怖のあまり狂える此奴等
These, mad with terror as the sea-bull sprawled
腰を抜かして転び回り、主人のことも放り出す
Wallowing about their feet, lost care of him
其奴等養ひしものを。して、かの戦車の柱
That reared them; and the master-chariot-pole
ぽっきり折れるや諸共に倒るること葦のよう
Snapping beneath their plunges like a reed,
ヒッポリュトスは、その足かっちり固め居りせば、
Hippolutos, whose feet were trammeled fast,
なお前へ前へと引きずられつつあり、手綱くるくる回りしに
Was yet dragged forward by the circling rein
いずれの手引くも、向きは変らず。止められもせず
Which either hand directed; nor was quenched
足に帆かけて逃げ撒き散らすは、
The frenzy of that flight before each trace,
滅茶苦茶な車の車輪やら破片やら、
Wheel-spoke and splinter of the woeful car,
玉石、切り株、刺々した貝殻その他、
Each boulder-stone, sharp stub, and spiny shell,
打ち寄せられ砂に巻かれた大いなる魚の骨
Huge fish-bone wrecked and wreathed amid the sands
その忌まわしき浜、かくも血に塗れたり
On that detested beach, was bright with blood
飛び散る彼が肉片に。次いで墜ちたりその馬も
And morsels of his flesh: then fell the steeds
頭を仰向け、仰け反ったままに崩れ落つ、
Head-foremost, crashing in their mooned fronts,
汗かき震え、恐怖のあまりに白目を剥き。
Shivering with sweat, each white eye horror-fixed.
遠目にて、全てを見つる仲間たち、
His people, who had witnessed all afar,
ヒッポリュトスが亡骸持ち帰りき。
Bore back the ruins of Hippolutos.
ところが父親、得意になってはしゃぎ居り、
But when his sire, too swoln with pride, rejoiced,
（不屈なる、然して不運なる男）
(Indomitable as a man foredoomed)
広大無辺のポセイドーン、信者の願いを叶え給うと。
That vast Poseidon had fulfilled his prayer,
妾ぞ、溢れ返らん栄光の中、
I, in a flood of glory visible,
死にゆく信者の代弁に立てり、実にそれ
Stood o’er my dying votary, and deed
成り行き曝露す、起これる全てを、真実を。
By deed revealed, as all took place, the truth.
たちまちテーセウス悲嘆の中の悲嘆に臥せり、
Then Theseus lay the woefullest of men,
ご立派にも。しかし顔布覆えるや
And worthily; but ere the death-veils hid
そのとき、害されし王子全ての赦しを喘ぐ
His face, the murdered prince full pardon breathed
軽率なる父親に。そこにアテーナイ悼み泣く。
To his rash sire. Whereat Athenai wails.
さても妾、信者決して見捨てぬ者なり、
So, I who ne’er forsake my votaries,
十字路にあって蜜菓子とろかす事なかれ
Lest in the cross-way none the honey-cake
はたまた犬の小便引っ掛ける事なかれ。
Should tender, nor pour out the dog’s hot life;
我が喜びにある司祭は愁いなきよう
Lest at my fain the priests disconsolate
妾が肖像襤褸の貧民共々装わしめよ
Should dress my image with some faded poor
若干の王冠、贔屓を目当てとするなかれ
Few crowns, made favours of, nor dare object
左様な怠慢、我が崇拝者に齎す輩は
Such slackness to my worshippers who turn
信心合掌他所にすべし
The trusting heart and loaded hand elsewhere
オリュンポス山登りつめ居り報告しようも
As they had climbed Oulumpos to report
アルテミスとその玉座何処にも見つかるまじーー
Of Artemis and nowhere found her throne—
と、妾挟めり。さてこの波乱の夜に
I interposed: and, this eventful night,
葬儀の進める折りしもさる人々の
While round the funeral pyre the populace
立ちすくむは黒き喪服も赫照らされ目を覆いつ
Stood with fierce light on their black robes that blind
すすり泣く頭各々、その髪も早や切りおおせて
Each sobbing head, while yet their hair they clipped
物言わぬ彼等が王子の亡骸取り縋り、
O’er the dead body of their withered prince,
そして宮殿にて、テーセウスひれ伏したり
And, in his palace, Theseus prostrated
冷たき薪の上、彼の眉は遺体の如くに冷たくして
On the cold hearth, his brow cold as the slab
傷つけられし折の、重い悲しみを呻き上げ—
’Twas bruised on, groaned away the heavy grief—
薪が落ちるや、組まれし丸太崩落し、
As the pyre fell, and down the cross logs crashed,
夜を通して群衆へ煌めき放てり。
Sending a crowd of sparkles thro’ the night,
煌びやかなる炎、極めて卓越せる、
And the gay fire, elate mastery,
蛇の如くにそびえ立つは、凝れる酒の
Towered like a serpent o’er the clotted jars
瓶が上、溶かし込めるは油に乳香、
Of wine, dissolving oils and frankincense,
それに金をさながら輝けるガム、—妾が神通
And splendid gums, like gold,—my potency
死せる男を我が隠れ家に運ぶ
Conveyed the perished man to my retreat
三倍尊きこの森の中。
In the thrice venerable forest here.
さて白髭生やせるこの賢者、ただ今木の実
And this white-bearded Sage who squeezes now
搾りたりしは、アポローンの名だたる息子、
The berried plant, is Phoibos’ son of fame,
アスクレーピオス、我が輝ける兄の教え給いし
Asclepios, whom my radiant brother taught
ハーブと花と根それぞれの学究
The doctrine of each herb and flower and root,
その奥深くに秘された美徳と精髄を知れる、
To know their secret’st virtue and express
全ての魂を救う：彼すなわち海苔もて鎮めたり
The saving soul of all—who so has soothed
引き裂かれし眉や害されし頬を、
With lavers the torn brow and murdered cheeks,
また髪を作り上げ、再びその光沢をもたらし、
Composed the hair and brought its gloss again,
青白き皮膚に血色呼び覚まし、
And called the red bloom to the pale skin back,
筋を埋め肉の端を刻むは
And laid the strips and jagged ends of flesh
一度ならず、して解すは腱の絡まり
Even once more, and slacked the sinew’s knot
捻じ曲げられし手足の全て。……遂に彼ぞ横たわるは、
Of every tortured limb—that now he lies
浅い眠りに落ちているかのよう
As if mere sleep possessed him underneath
楢と松織り合わさるこの下に。ああ誉ある
These interwoven oaks and pines. Oh, cheer,
癒しの杖の聖なる遣い手よ、
Divine presenter of the healing rod
そなたの蛇、熱烈なる喉と潤む目を以て、
Thy snake, with ardent throat and lulling eye,
しなやかにとぐろ巻きつけよ！さあ、元気いっぱい！
Twines his lithe spires around! I say, much cheer!
進むがよい、そなたの賢き薬師等と共に！
Proceed thou with thy wisest pharmacies!
そしてそなた等白き衆、森の姉妹なる妖精達、
And ye, white crowd of woodland sister-nymphs,
用いよ、賢者が指示する通り、これらのつぼみと葉を
Ply, as the Sage directs, these buds and leaves
その2種の周りには芝を敷け！然る程に妾
That strew the turf around the Twain! While I
待ちうける、かく在るべき沈黙の中、来るべきを。
Await, in fitting silence, the event.
the sea-bull sprawled：海神ポセイドーン従える眷属の一が牡牛。その神牛が海上から、ぬっと立現れる様を「巻広がった」とする。
chariot：古代の戦闘用馬車。戦車。当時の貴重品であった故に神の乗り物ともされた。鐙の発明により騎乗法が改良され、騎兵が出現して廃れた。戦車に鐙があったかのように詩人が描写しているのは、従って歴史的に誤り。
Which either hand ～：一般に手綱の片方を引いて馬の向きを変え、両方を引いて止める。ところが恐慌した馬は何をしても言う事をきかなくなった、と。
Lest in the cross-way～：後にアルテミスと混同された月神ヘカテーは、旅と交通の神でもあり、特に三叉路に祀られた神像は「三叉路のヘカテー」と呼ばれた。
the healing rod：アスクレーピオスの杖。杖に薬師蛇が1匹巻き付いている意匠。
神話では、この後ヒッポリュトスは蘇る。しかしアスクレーピオスは、死の運命を曲げたとして怒る大神ゼウスに殺される。
この悲劇は、エウリーピデース『ヒッポリュトス』セネカ『パエドラ』にも歌われたが、詩人が観たのはラシーヌ『フェードル』であろう。
王妃パイドラー及び煽ったアプロディーテーが元凶のように見られるけれど。夫テーセウスが行方不明になった（と『フェードル』では設定されている）以上、若く精力的な王子に期待するしかなかったのでは。元来パイドラーはパーシュパエー共々、多産を善しとする地母神であった。その点、アルテミスやアプロディーテーの分身と見ることもできよう。なお中東の女神アナーヒター/ アスタルテー/イシュタルに由来するアプロディーテー、そしてアルテミスは、元は同一かもしれないが、エフェソスで崇められたアルテミスに対してアプロディーテーはキプロスを本拠地とした。
