Ryosaku regained his composure in a room filled with bright sunlight and began thinking about the letter that Mieko's mother had written to him.

Ryosaku can understand that Mieko was terminally ill and no longer her former beauty, so even though she thought of him, she refrained from meeting or contacting him and spent her final moments with him.
