Desire For the Future

"Hey, even our parents are going to join the experiment?"

"It seems like to be."

"Anyway, we need to find his head as soon as possible."

We all went upstairs at once.

"Hey look!"

Keisuke urged us to look out the window.

"They really came."

Outside the window, a dozen adults wandered around the schoolyard like robots.

"Mom! Help me!"

A middle school student ran out into the schoolyard. However, the mother-like figure ignored the student, as if she was unaware of her presence.

"Apparently, being manipulated is real too."

Kazuhiro bit his lip so hard that it almost bleed.

"Before, some of us were careful enough since we were dealing with strange eerie clones. But now our minds get disturbed by the intrusion of the relatives, someone who are familar. To add insult to that mentality, if they side with the enemy clones, the disappointment is immense. In the worst case scenario, suicides and even the killing of one's own parents will going to occur. If that happens, we will lose our human emotions and truly become like a moving puppets with no real feelings."

Kazuhiro again analyzed the situation like a psychosomatic physician.

"We have to stop that at any cost…"

Inspired by Kazuhiro's words, I said that to myself.

"I'm never going to die. And I'm not gonna let my parents die either."

Keisuke was clutching something tightly.

"What are you holding?"

"This is a good luck charm my dead father made for me."

Keisuke opened the hand.

Inside was a red bag with a yellow thread stitched with the words, "protective amulet."

"This has saved my life many times, so I'm sure it will protect me this time as well. I mean as long as I don't give it away."

Keisuke opened his mouth widely and showed his teeth, but his eyes were serious.

"Well, then I'll make a wish too. Let's see, I wish to be able to surf in the ocean."

Kazuhiro held his hands together in front of his chest.

"Surfing?"

I was a little surprised because I thought Kazuhiro was a logical thinker and does not believe this kind of thing.

"Yeah. I like surfing. But I have only swum on artificial waves. I want to go to the beach. I want to ride on the white waves that spread out over the wide expanse of blue ocean."

Then Kazuhiro and Keisuke looked at me.

"What? Me? Umm...I wish for a graduation from university."

"Yours seems to come true very easily."

Kazuhiro gave me a disgusted look.

"I don't have big dreams like you guys."

"It's not a dream. It's a wish for the future."

"Isn’t that you just changed the word into fancier of saying dream?"

”No. A dream is striving now because you have something you want to do in the future. Living in the present because of what you want to achieve in the future. That is a wish."

"Isn’t that the same?"

I questioned to Kazuhiro.

"To put it simply, dream is something you want to achieve in future. Wishes don't have to be fulfilled. The important thing is to live in the moment with the strong belief that it can be achieved."

"I still don’t understand."

"That’s fine. The concepts that can't be explained well with words will arouse people's curiosity."

Kazuhiro suddenly gave me a sharp look, as if he could see right through me.

"But remember this. If you lose your wish, you lose the hope of living…"

Those words later resonated strongly with me.
