Voices from the Darkness
This is a piece of fiction written in English.
Please read it with that in mind.
Someone called out to me from the darkness.
"I think it's about time you wrote down what you really think."
"What... what are you talking about?"
"That she was an anti-establishment idol."
I raised my voice.
"What exactly are you trying to say?!"
"There was a Japanese idol girl who shaved her head to apologize for having a boyfriend."
"And then?"
"Why do you think Morita Doji hid the fact that she was already married when she debuted?"
"That's because her debut song was 'Goodbye, My Friend,' and she had to hide the smell of her everyday
life in order to more strongly express the pure feelings in the song ... I think."
"If that's the case, does that mean the production team has to hide the fact that she was also in a romantic relationship with the friend she was living with?"
"a romantic relationship?"
"I mean a physical relationship."
"But Doji denied having a physical relationship in some of her songs."
"Yes, but she does sing in some of her songs that they were cheek to cheek and chest to chest, and that
they slept with their arms around each other's shoulders. Wouldn't it be strange for a man and a woman in such a situation not to become physical?"
"..."
"Do you remember the artwork on the cover of Morita Doji's third original album? Doji wanted to express
that she was an android. And she wanted the artwork to show her surrounded by flowers.
But perhaps the production team was afraid that her image would change, so they secretly ordered the
artist to change the flowers to grass.
Similarly, the production team had to emphasize that Doji's relationship with him was purely friendship.
It is quite possible that they instructed her to sing lyrics in some songs that implied that she had not had a physical relationship. This can be seen as a natural measure to maintain her value as an idol. "
"That's just your subjective opinion, isn't it?" I retorted.
"By the way, what do you think of her singing style in "Beautifully Bloomed" and "Celluloid Girl" ?
"Don't suddenly change the topic."
"The way I see it, money was spent to keep her mother and brother quiet.
So in 'Celluloid Girl,' the mother and brother complain, and in 'Beautifully Bloomed' they're on a big ship."
"Who gave them the money?"
"Douji's husband or the production team?"
"So why are you bringing this up now?"
"If Douji is an idol, she will naturally be tied down to the production team, who are responsible for
maintaining her image in front of her fans. That's why they instructed her to make her relationship with
her boyfriend look like they're just friends."
"Well, that's your subjective interpretation."
"Hmmm, you can just believe in your own illusion and feel happy."
"You... dream destroyer!"
"I'm not a dream destroyer, but an illusion destroyer. You're a poor guy who fell in love with an android or
celluloid girl."
"You idiot!"
"There was once a group of people who wanted to discuss Doji on the web. And guess what happened?
The group who had gathered various facts about Doji and had even discovered that she had a child got
into a fight with the group of people who simply saw her as an idol, and the discussion fell apart.
The words the idol supporters said to the fact-finding group at the time were exactly what you said earlier: "You idiots!" They refused to even acknowledge the obvious fact that Doji had a child. They refused to let the illusion they believed in be exposed."
With those words, the voice in the darkness disappeared.
I shouted into the empty darkness.
"I'm not like those people!"
But of course the darkness made no reply.
Again, the above is fiction. Please take it with a pinch of salt. And let me know what you think.
