「水の王」とは聞き覚えがなく、類例がないか調べたところ「水の民」「水妖」「水の精」「人魚♂」に当たる水難事故の象徴のようだ。実際、英訳者も "Water-Fiend", "Water-Spright" と言い換えており、「水中エルフ」という言い方はしないけれど、そんな感じ。
穏やかにさざめき流れる潮、
香り高い花咲き乱れる岸辺を
陽気な讃美歌、愛らしい乙女、
聖マリア教会へ、歩みを進め。
WITH gentle murmur flow'd the tide,
While by its fragrant flowery side
The lovely maid, with carols gay,
To Mary's church pursued her way.
水の魔物の邪悪な眼差し
岸辺で見つめる急ぎ足
母たる魔女へまっすぐ駆け寄り
斯く懇願の口調もて語りき：
The Water-Fiend's malignant eye
Along the banks beheld her hie;
Straight to his mother-witch he sped,
And thus in suppliant accents said:
「さて母よ、わが母よ！助言を求む、
あの乙女を如何にか不意打てる？
さて母よ、わが母よ！説明求む、
あの乙女を如何にか手に入れられる？」

“How I may yonder maid surprise:
“Oh ! mother ! mother ! now explain,
“How I may yonder maid obtain.”―
魔女は与える白い鎧、
堂々たる騎士の装い。
お次は手ずから水で
造る駿馬、鞍は砂で。
The witch she gave him armour white;
She form'd him like a gallant knight:
Of water clear next made her hand
A steed, whose housings were of sand.
水の王はすいすい進んで、
聖マリア教会へと足を向け。
乗騎を門に繋いだら、
墓地をうろうろ歩き回った。
The Water-King then swift he went;
To Mary's church his steps he bent:
He bound his courser to the door,
And paced the churchyard three times four.
駿馬は門に繋いでおいた、

人々群がる、大小さまざま。

The priest said, as the knight drew near,
―“And wherefore comes the white chief here ?”―
The lovely maid she smiled aside;
―“Oh ! would I were the white chief's bride !”―
一つ二つと長椅子またぎ、
―「おお！麗しき乙女、貴女となら死んでもいい！」―
二つ三つと長椅子またぎ、
―「おお！麗しき乙女、この身と共に来るがいい！」―
He stepp'd o'er benches one and two;
―“Oh ! lovely maid, I die for you !”―

すると愛らしい乙女は優しく微笑み
手を差し伸べながら言うことに
―「喜びの時も、悲しみの時も、

Then sweetly smiled the lovely maid;
And while she gave her hand, she said,
―“Betide me joy, betide me woe,
“ O'er hill, o'er dale, with thee I go. ”―
司祭が二人の手を合わせる、
月の光が澄み渡る中、二人は踊る。
思いもよらぬ、輝く乙女は、
その踊り相手が水の精だとは。
The priest their hands together joins;
― They dance, while clear the moon-beam shines:
And little thinks the maiden bright,
Her partner is the Water-Spright.
ああ！歌い教え給う霊ましませば、
「汝が花婿、水の王なり！」とは。
乙女は恐怖と憎悪を認めたろうに、
握りしめた手を呪っただろうに。
Oh ! had some spirit deign'd to sing,
―“Your bridegroom is the Water-King !”―
The maid had fear and hate confess'd,
And cursed the hand which then she press'd.
しかし引き止めるもの何もなし
如何に近づけるやら危険の淵に、
止まらない、手に手を取り合い
黄金の砂浜に到着した恋人たち。
But nothing giving cause to think
How near she stray'd to danger's brink,
Still on she went, and hand in hand
The lovers reach'd the yellow sand.
―「愛しき人よ、この馬に共に乗りなさい！
ここの小川を渡らなければならない。
大胆に乗り入れよ、深くないから、
風は静まり、波は眠っているから」―
―“Ascend this steed with me, my dear !
“We needs must cross the streamlet here:
“Ride boldly in; it is not deep;
“The winds are hush'd, the billows sleep.”―
かく語りき水の王。これに乙女は
裏切り者、花婿の願いに従った。
即ち見よ、駿馬が渫われ、
親なる波に、喜んで。
Thus spoke the Water-King. The maid
Her traitor-bridegroom's wish obey'd:
And soon she saw the courser lave
Delighted in his parent wave.
―「止めて！止めて！愛しい人よ！青海原が
今まさに、震える私の足を濡らしてるわ。」―
―「ああ！恐れることはない、愛しい人よ！
もう僕等は、一番深い場所まで来れたよ。」―
―“Stop ! stop ! my love ! The waters blue
“E'en now my shrinking foot bedew.”―
―“Oh ! lay aside your fears, sweet heart !
“We now have reach'd the deepest part.”―
―「止めて！止めて！愛しい人よ！もう見てよ、
水が膝の上まで来ているよ。」―
―「ああ！恐れることはない、愛しい人よ！
もう僕等は、一番深い場所まで来れたよ。」―
―“Stop ! stop ! my love ! For now I see
“The waters rise above my knee.”―
―“Oh ! lay aside your fears, sweet heart !
“We now have reach'd the deepest part.”
―「止めて！止めて！後生だから、止めて！
ああ！水嵩が胸を越えて！」―
その言葉さえも終わらぬうちに、
騎士も駿馬もたちまち消え去り。
―“Stop ! stop ! for God's sake, stop ! for oh !
“The waters o'er my bosom flow !”―
Scarce was the word pronounced, when knight
And courser vanish'd from her sight.
悲鳴上げるも、叫び虚しく。
風が吹き荒れ、その声かき消す。
悪魔は歓喜、大波おし寄せ、
哀れな犠牲者、呑み込んで。
She shrieks, but shrieks in vain; for high
The wild winds rising, dull the cry;
The fiend exults; the billows dash,
And o'er their hapless victim wash.
三度も流れに抗いながら、
愛らしい乙女の叫び聞こえた。
しかし嵐が過ぎ去ると、
乙女の姿もはや見えずと。
Three times, while struggling with the stream,
The lovely maid was heard to scream;
But when the tempest's rage was o'er,
The lovely maid was seen no more.
この物語に戒めを得よ、麗しき乙女たちよ、
愛を捧げる相手には心せよ！
なべて見目麗しい騎士信じるべからず、
水の精などと踊るべからず！
Warn'd by this tale, ye damsels fair,
To whom you give your love beware !
Believe not every handsome knight,
And dance not with the Water-Spright ! *
実は * の後に原註として、別バージョンもあるのだが、長くなるので分ける。
訳注
mother-witch: 水妖が魔女の息子という設定は、スコットランドの水妖 fuathの女と骨無し brollachanの母子が「フーアの水車屋」に憑いたという話くらいか。
the white chief: big white chief という（今や嫌われつつある）慣用句的な言い方はある。が、19世紀初頭のニュージーランドでマオリ族と生活し、白人でありながら酋長となった、スコットランド人船員の話が “John Rutherford, the White Chief: A Story of Adventure in New Zealand” として出版されたのは1830年頃で、本書へ影響した筈はなく、ルイスの典拠は不明
